I cannot watch DVD's using win 7 Media Center RTM (x64).(Original movie / disk) The picture is totally disorted.

I have tried to install windvd and i can watch DVDs using that program just fine.

When attempting to play a dvd i sometimes get this error message "VIDEO ERROR - Files needed to display video are not installed or not working correctly. Please restart Media Center and/or restart the computer."

I have tried to uninstall / install media center and media player again.

The machine is a dedicated MCE machine and no other software (except AV) has been install. All drivers are up to date.

Any idea?

I have noticed that the each post in the forum contains the title of the post. That is pretty neat! :-)

How do you do that?

Do you programmatically create a new file on disk for each post or are you using some kind of URL rewrite feature?

If it is the latter can you explain how to do that or point me in the right direction. I would like to do something similiar on my own site.

I need to change the primary e-mail address (hotmail) to another e-mail adresse (also hotmail) ... or move my exsiting contacts from the former to the latter account. I have searched and searched ... and many people claim that you cannot do that, if you are using hotmail. Do i really need to create a gmail account in order to keep my contacts? :-(

Do I have to reinvite all my contacts or is there another option. I can see a passport.com that you can linked accounts ... i have done that but that does not move the contact.

Any idea?

When downloading a file using IE the file gets downloaded to some temp folder first and the moved the destination location. Many download manager are able to download directly to destination folder. Whats the reason for the IE behaviour ... all it seems to do is to make download slower compared to the approach taken by download managers.

Can an urelated topic sometimes be related? If so .. :-)

I have noticed when moving large files from a windows desktop client to a Windows Server the files are getting copied to a temp location, on the client, before they are getting moved the server. I have seen out of diskspace warnings, on client, when moving files.

Why those temp folder operations?

Small question. I you override a method does your custom logic go before or after the base call?

Looking throug samples and coworker code (and my own code ;-) ) there seems to be no consensus. What is the correct way? Is there a correct way or does it depend on the task your are preforming?

I have to create an asp.net image gallery type of application that allows users to upload files and for anonymous users to view those files. The owner should be allowed to delete own files.

The site will be using forms based authentication (asp.net membership) and will be running IIS 6, 2003 Server and SQL Server 2005.

One option is to store the images in the SQL Server. That will give me easy access to determine if a user is allowed to delete / alter an image.

Can I also use the file system for storage? How do I control access rights to the files? If I place a web.config in the root of the directory how can I specify, that only users that belong to a specific membership role, can delete / alter files in that directory?

I wanted to see if good old Diablo II would work under Win7 (x64) ... i didn't expect it too but that should not stop me from trying :-)

Diablo installed just fine but would not start ... the game reported that the hardware was unsupported ... tried to install XP under virtual PC ... same result ... tried the XP mode for win 7 ... it could not start the virtual application (but it made the correct entries in my win 7 start menu).

I finally downloaded a trail version of vmware proffesional. Dioblo runs "fine" under vmware...vmware is using around 70% CPU but it works ...

Is XP Mode for Win 7 not supposed to address this issue? If not ... what are you using XP mode for?

Hi all,

I am a long time user of Windows Media Center (since XP beta) and I cannot imagine watching TV without it. But I am very close to finding an alternative to MCE.

In the very heart of MCE you have the Electronic Program Guide (EPG) which is a web service that updates the program guide with program listening and allows you to browse the programs and also allows me to record TV programs.

If the information in that guide is out of date you hardly can use your TV. Programs are missing; the recorder records the wrong programs; recording ends 10 minutes before the show ends and things like that.

In Denmark it seems like the EPG has not been updated this year. I cannot find EPG information for around 30% of my channels and MCE believes that Channel A is Channel B, Channel C is Channel D. I have a standard cabel program package from the largest cabel company in Denmark ... nothing special or anything like that.

Microsoft purchases the information in the EPG from some British company. That company says that it is Microsoft problem. Microsoft says that it is that company’s problem so no one seems to care and now I have all the problems.

There are people in the forum that works for Microsoft. Isn’t there someone that would be so kind to get someone to look at this issue because the current situation has turned one of Microsoft best pieces of software in to useless “#¤#%”.

Under Windows XP it was possible to bypass Microsoft’s EPG guide and use XML TV instead (some open source EPG implementation). I Microsoft cannot handle the task of updating the EPG guide please allow us to use some other EPG source.

PS: Still on Vista MCE since a few of my add-ons has not been updated to win7 yet. Don't know if it has become better in Win 7 ... have my doubts.

Is it possible to pin a folder or a library to the taskbar in win 7 and have the content of those folders / libraries show up on the jump list?

If I try they get pinned to Windows Explorer instead.

There used to be a product named Winternals Administrator's Pak. I think i remember something about that Microsoft (when they aquired Winternals) turned that in to a product only available to select/volume licens?, or something, customers.

I cannot remember the new name of the new product. Any one knows?

Windows 7 testers won’t be able to install Microsoft’s near-final Release Candidate (RC) test build of Internet Explorer (IE) 8 — a limitation Microsoft is acknowledging and saying is by design.

“It’s not really a ‘won’t work’ issue as much as a ‘won’t install issue’ since it is a beta and the goal is to get feedback on the Windows 7 beta itself."

If true, that is very sad news, since the main issue or a major issue with the stability of Win 7 is related to IE 8.

Hi all,

The only major issue so far with Win 7 (x64) is Internet Explorer 8. It can best be described as "not ready". The reliability monitor in Win 7 agrees with me. It gives my system a reliability ratings on 1 - 2 out of 10 due to IE.

9 of out 14 error reports send so far is caused by IE (4 days period).

The version of IE that comes with win 7 is 8.0.7000.0 and the version that Microsoft released as RC1 on in December is version 8.0.6001.18343

If that version number means that the version of IE that ships with Win 7 are a later build the RC 1 Microsoft will have a very huge problem when IE 8 goes RTM.

Hi all,

I have found a .com domain that I would like to purchase. The domain name is currently owned by a private individual living in England. I live in another EC country. I have already e-mailed with the owner and agreed to speak about the transaction in a few weeks.

My question is. How do we do the stuff with the money? I am sure that he will not transfer the domain name to me without knowing that he will get the money and I am not going to transfer any money to him without knowing that I will get the domain name.

Do you have any advice for me?

Hi all,

I am trying to make my asp.net application validate against the w3c XHTML 1.0 Transitional standard. I have one issue left that i have not been able to solve ... and i have not been able to find an answer on google or live search.

I get the following error:
character "$" is not allowed in the value of attribute "id".

Those ID's are all generated by asp.net.

It there a method to have asp.net generate id values that conform to the standards?
I have added <xhtmlConformance mode="Transitional" /> to the <system.web> section in web.config.
