Building an Outlook Mail App using the "Napa" Office 365 Development Tools

In this interview I sit down with Saurabh Bhatia, a Program Manager on the Office tools in Visual Studio team. Saurabh helps me understand the new Office and SharePoint Apps model as we build a fun mail app for Outlook. I'm a total newbie coming into the new app model, but Saurabh is patient with me as he walks through how easy it is to get started. He shows us how we can build these apps using "Napa" development tools—a completely online in-browser experience. There's a lot of flexibility in this new architecture and it's exciting to see the appeal to web developers. He also shows the integration of these tools with Visual Studio 2012. You can try out the app Saurabh built here.

For more information and to get started building Apps for Office & SharePoint see: http://dev.office.com

And for a more detailed overview of the new Apps model see: Building Office and SharePoint Apps with "Napa" and Visual Studio

Enjoy,
-Beth Massi, Visual Studio Community

Speed Up Azure Deployments with the New Web Deployment Feature

In this interview, Anders Hauge, a Program Manager on the Azure tools team, shows us how the new Web Deployment feature along with Remote Desktop allows you to incrementally publish your web applications to the Azure cloud. This means that you can make updates to your already deployed web apps with just the changes onto the same running instance, which greatly accelerates the process of deploying updates while debugging your cloud-based web applications. <itunes:summary> In this interview, Anders Hauge, a Program Manager on the Azure tools team, shows us how the new Web Deployment feature along with Remote Desktop allows you to incrementally publish your web applications to the Azure cloud. This means that you can make updates to your already deployed web apps with just the changes onto the same running instance, which greatly accelerates the process of deploying updates while debugging your cloud-based web applications. Make sure to watch as Anders (humorously) goes into the details of how it works and what the limitations are. This new feature is available in the Azure SDK 1.4.1 refresh which you can install via the Web Platform Installer. For more information see the Windows Azure news from MIX 11.
Walkthrough of a Real-World LightSwitch Application used at Microsoft

In this video, I interview a couple of LightSwitch team members, Mike Droney (Tester) and Sheel Shah (PM), as they walk me through a real application that was built for our Admins in order to track hardware assets across the developer division. Mike and Sheel talk about the requirement gathering and development processes as well as some of the advanced features of the application. They were able to build a working prototype in no time and then used an iterative development approach to add more and more features that users wanted. LightSwitch let them concentrate on business value and user productivity and not worry about any of the plumbing required to build a modern Silverlight, n-tier application with a lot of advanced features including a generic report builder.

Their application is based on LightSwitch Beta 2, which is available for the public to download today!
Multi-Targeting Deep Dive with Visual Basic 2010

I'm back with
Spotty Bowles, a tester on the VB compiler team, as he shows us the ins and outs of how multi-targeting works in Visual Basic projects in Visual Studio 2010. We've had multi-targeting since Visual Studio 2008, but what's tricky in 2010 is that there are
now two supported versions of the CLR. Spotty shows us how to work with client and full framework profiles in Visual Studio, as well as what happens at runtime when referenced class libraries target a different profile. He also shows us how to use some of
the new VB10 language features when down targeting to 2.0, and how to specify down targeting from the build command line.

For more information, check out Spotty's article in MSDN magazine:
Multi-Targeting Visual Basic Applications in Visual Studio 2010.

Enjoy,
-Beth Massi, Visual Studio Community

Tips & Tricks with Business Data Connectivity Model Deployment in Visual Studio 2010

I'm back with Boris Scholl, the Program Manager who designed the BDC Model designer in Visual Studio 2010. Boris is a SharePoint expert, and in this interview he shares some tips and tricks having to do with BDC model deployment to SharePoint 2010. He provides
insight into what the designer is doing behind the scenes, what happens when you deploy the package, and how you can configure it to do exactly what you need.

Boris and I are good friends and in this interview we joke around a bit as he explains to me (a total SharePoint n00b!) how BDC models work. Hope you enjoy this one as much as I did.

"Web Part" item templates in Visual Studio, as well as best practices on when and why to use each of them. He also (patiently) teaches me the differences between sandbox and farm solutions.

LINQ Language Deep Dive with Visual Studio 2008

Ever wonder what really happens when you write a simple LINQ query? A lot of new language features went into the compilers in Visual Studio 2008 to make LINQ work. In this interview I sit down with Jonathan Aneja, a Program Manager on the Visual
Basic Compiler team, who dives deep into these features like Type Inference, Anonymous Types, Lambda Expressions, Expressions Trees, and more. He explains what's actually happening behind the scenes and all the work the compiler is doing for you when you write
a LINQ query. My head almost explodes at the end but I learned a lot of important concepts.
About the “I’m a VB” Interview series:
Who’s the “typical VB.NET developer”? Is there one? There are millions of VB.NET developers in the world, and they each have their own unique story. We decided to talk to some of them to find out what kinds of applications they’re building, what technologies
they’re using, and what their favorite features are. Watch the interviews and find out for yourself who today's VB.NET developers really are!
