Coffeehouse - MVPs

My take: I am an MVP and I couldn't really care much for that. What matters for me is to meet and collaborate with individuals who are equally passionate and enthusiastic about technology, regardless of status. We're in this community to learn and share
and accelerate our absorption of knowledge. I'd say give little weightage to the signature of anybody and just concentrate on their
content and judge for yourselves if you'd want to listen and follow their advice. Those not worth it, should therefore, be ignored - why waste time lamenting over them?

Coffeehouse - Career of a developer - How?

mertsakarya wrote:

Can an engineer be a good manager? As a manager I won't be using my main skills, I have to learn a different/new skill-set. Have I wasted my time all these years?

Wish i had that amount of years under my beat to start reflecting

I think Number One is the individual's career and life goals. Do you wish to be a businessman in the plumbing industry, or be an expert plumber? Those should present two different paths (how drastic, i dunno).

Here in Singapore, I hardly meet programmers/developers who want to remain a hardcore developer forever. It has largely to do with the local culture where developers are not highly regarded and the only way up the chain to larger remunerations and hierarchy
position is to management. That means leaving the "lowly" work of programming (construction) to younger blood. Money wins at the end of the day.

In fact, of a different vein, i am trying to looking into ways to promote a change in mindset amongst local employers how they engage and employ developers to carry out project work. Would love to hear/read what advice can be had for this

Coffeehouse - Whats after NT kernel?

Well if you look at the things Longhorn is trying to achieve, there're some pretty major changes that will be brought about by that new OS.

Granted, those subsystems (Avalon, WinFS, Indigo, etc) are quite very much outer layers and can't be positioned together with the
core kernel.

If you want things to change at that level, it'll have to be the generation after Longhorn. Wait. Real long.

Coffeehouse - I hate computers...

I suppose no aircraft flying overhead with ECM jammers on full blast

Ok joke aside, since you are having such a variety of STOP errors, maybe your motherboard's the piece that's gone cranky. That's real difficult to verify unless you have a spare motherboard of the same model, though.

In a previous time (out of so many) long gone, i had to go through 3 motherboard switches for a problem that wasn't directly with the motherboard, but an ultra isolated case of CPU-motherboard incompatibility. The CPU worked all fine on another motherboard,
and other CPUs worked fine on that motherboard. Oh the years of pain until i actually discovered that.
