If most are staying on for the drinks in the evening that would probably be the best time for me.

Ian

Coffeehouse - Heath Ledger has Died

It seems the whole world has an opinion, and feel qualified to pass judgement, on celebrities - even when they don't know them, or don't even know who they are.

Even the most basic research pulls up the following facts, so before we all rush to condemn bear in mind the following:

Fact: no suicide note was found. This is unusual in high-profile cases like this.
Fact: no non-prescription drugs were found
Fact: In an interview with New York Times last November Ledger complained his body was exhausted but his mind couldn't turn off. He complained he was averaging just two hours sleep a night.
Fact: He said that even the strongest sleeping pills were only working for him for an hour.
Fact: He had been working in London on Saturday and was undoubtedly jet-lagged when he returned to New York

I'm waiting for the autopsy but in all the tabloid muck-raking that's going on I'm finding it hard to find any facts that justify some of the snide insinuations they're making.

Not been in years past, but am booked for this one.

I imagine it will follow the formula of most of these events (TechEd, PDC etc) albeit on a smaller (more intimate?) scale - a good chance to network and get re-enthused, especially about future stuff away from the dreary day job, but probably not great value for money if your main reason for attending is training (the conference itself is reasonably priced but the hotel, even discounted, is extortionate).

You think those endless database corruptions and warning that you need to analyze the database are "needed"?!!! :O

Used SourceSafe at Ford about 8 years ago and it was a nightmare - we lost the database twice and quickly moved to something else. Then 6 months ago I got a contract where they were using SourceSafe 2005. It seemed like every wretched morning you'd get in to
find it warning you that the SourceSafe database needed analyzing and fixing.

It's real fun when you rename files!

It is by far the worst source control system out there. Are there any other than SourceSafe that DON'T support continuous integration?

SourceSafe - just say no!

The Microsoft Downloads site is Silverlight 1.0 I believe, and given performance of other Silverlight sites I suspect any performance problems are nothing to do with Silverlight (but I'm too lazy to analyse the page and http traffic to work out what IS causing

Coffeehouse - shopping online

I buy pretty much everything online, unless it's a high ticket item (eg I bought my plasma TV at a local store rather than saving a bunch on buying online because I wanted someone to install it and take responsibility for any problems there might be).

Things seem to have got worse over the last year or so. "In stock" used to mean "In stock" not "As soon as we've taken your order we;ll change the order to "Temporarily out of stock" and then leave you waiting for weeks. Amazon are the worst, especially with
pre-orders.

The biggest problem I have with online ordering is the delivery companies who are ALL rubbish. You wait 2 weeks for an item and the company claims they "attempted" delivery 4 times and left a card when you'd stayed in all day and they hadn't - the driver
just figured he'd fake it. You rearrange delivery for a specific day and they don't show up, with no explanation ever given and the online ticketing just mysteriously showing no update. etc etc etc. It all just adds too much stress and way too much time off
(or staying in at home) so much so that I'm actually moving to the alternative model of picking up stuff myself from bricks and mortar stores where I can have some control over WHEN I get the wretched goods, even if it costs more money.

Coffeehouse - ZAM 3D v1.0 Released for creating 3D XAML for WPF apps

Thanks for taking the trouble to post this information Mike - very useful!

Just discovered (via your forums) the excellent "beta" tutorials for Zam 3D at
http://learnexpressionstudio.com as part of the ExpressTrain video series. This is good stuff for 3D novices like me, especially since there seems to be so little information on Electric Rain's own site, and a very nice example of a good WPF application
with "Click Once" deployment.

This looks like an essential resource for anybody working with the Expression/Electric Rain products although of course a lot depends on what the final subscription model turns out to be once it's out of beta.

I'm going to have a play with the trial version of Swift 3D before ordering ZAM 3D since it seems to offer an additional discount on ZAM 3D if ordered beforehand. What are the plans for getting a trial version of ZAM 3D and Electric Rain's own tutorials up
and running?

Coffeehouse - Swift 3D v5.0 exports Silverlight XAML

Been wondering what the difference between SWIFT and ZAM 3D was - my very crude reading of the web site had lead me to believe that SWIFT was primarily aimed at Flash developers and ZAM 3D for Blend but it now seems like you're saying use SWIFT for Silverlight
and ZAM 3D for Expression Blend/WPF (or is that too simplistic a summary?).

Doesn't Blend allow you to export Silverlight XAML? If that's the case why would SWIFT be needed in addition to ZAM 3D when you could just export ZAM 3D to Blend and from there export to Silverlight XAML?

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the recently posted (earlier today) koolaid C9 video on MIX08 where we're told things are so much easier now that Visual Studio 2008 is out, and I'm afraid I've gone and had a bit of a rant in response because the whole
situation is madness: Let me see now... you need four Expression products and VS 2008 to get the best out of web site development with XAML and this apparently is simpler. Oh, but if you want 3D you need to buy third party products like those from Electric
Rain - and ideally one for Silverlight, one for full WPF? How is this in any shape, size or fashion making life "much simpler" for developers (don't even get me started on bringing AJAX into the equation). Clearly Microsoft folks are on a different planet
from the one I'm inhabiting! Just trying to get anyone to explain the differences between all these products, why they're needed and how they fit into workflow at the most basic level is like trying to catch moonlight in a bucket!

ZAM 3D is a nice product and with the discounts on offer if ordered before the end of the year I'm tempted to go for it, but if I then have to buy another product for Silverlight it's all getting way too messy (and way too expensive) too fast.
