It's only December 6th, how do you know what everyone has chosen for your gift?

    A) I don't really wait until Christmas to open whatever I get, I just tell people I did.

    B) I listed everything I will be getting this year, as that was the list of my family / friends that will be getting me anything this year. More than likely due to the aforementioned <Rambling />

Aww come on man, you messed up my Google rank for Arbitrary Cool Points. Thanks to this thread, my blog is down to #2 of 1,400,000! At least I still have very widescreen(Google) and Christmas Dreamscene (Google).

Well, in the grand scheme of things I think I got a bit jipped.

Slackmaster K got me a WD Raptor 150, which got him 150 arbitrary cool points awarded. But in return I got him a job that pays 2.5x what his last one did, so the $200.00 expendature was minimal at best, so I deduct about 92,850 arbitrary cool points.

My wife (which means an extension of my checkbook) got me two Dell 2407WFP's, which was also nice. But in return I just signed off on a $400,000 home loan, so adding the fact that the monitors came from me anyway, I deduct 401,200 arbitrary cool points from her.

My mom got me the Get Smart DVD collect, so for originality and since I didn't pay anything myself, she is awarded 75 arbitrary cool points that are not deducted.

My in-laws got me a $50 gift card to Best Buy, which awards them 25 arbitrary cool points, since I pre-deducted 25 due to the fact I can't buy anything I want at Best Buy for $50, and using the gift card actually takes about as long to utilize with cash/credit as it would for me to make that much at work. I then deduct the dinner I had to take them to to acquire said gift card, which their share came to 76.25. So a total of -51.25 arbitrary cool points are awarded.

I bought all five kids gifts, which combined came out to about $3,500. In return I got a hand made Christmas Card. 100 arbitrary cool point are awarded for the original gift, 3500 are deducted. Giving them -3,400 combined or -680 per child.

So the leaderboard is as follows:

    Mom: 75
    Kids: -3400
    In-Laws: -51.25
    Slackmaster K: -92,850
    Wife: -401,200

    Total: -497426.25

So, in conclusion, Christmas is about the least Merry part of my year. So unmerry, I have to backbuild months in advance to get to this unmerry point.

    Happy Holidays

  • Hi, I'm Chris and I am a VB.NET developer !

Fellow GWB member, Chris Williams has posted a very frank critique of what it is to be a VB.Net developer today.

    http://geekswithblogs.net/cwilliams/archive/2007/10/23/116274.aspx

Why is it that VB is such a maligned language still? It's 100% .Net language these days. Have the C zealots won? Is VB heading for the sunset?

When the trend is now to head towards Dynamic languages, like Ruby with very high levels of abstraction why is VB so villanised when surely this language is the grand-father of this trend?

As a VB.Net Dev myself I can say that I haven't encountered this personally. In fact I get more offers daily than the C# counterparts on my team. Granted I might have a better resume, but if that were the case, I should be getting alot of headhunter calls asking for C# or Java, which I do get, but not as much.

I can't really say it's heading for the sunset at this time, there must be millions of old VB6 applications that run perfectly, but just need a tune up.

In my situation my boss is an old VB6 argonaut, he hired me specifically because I didn't want to language switch on him, which apperantly is a trend these days. If he got a language switch he couldn't run an accurate code review, and would have to be dependant on the C#/Java dev(s). Which basically means if they take a walk, he's up the creek. If I decide to take a walk, he's a bit unhappy, but can still complete the release lifecycle.

That is not to say that the same situation doesn't exist in the C world, I'm sure it does.

I guess what we are seeing is equatable to the "AJAX/Web 2.0" trend of late. Someone hears a buzzword "C#, AJAX, Flash, Silverlight" and they "know" that is what they want, without doing any real research into the subject matter.

    Just my two cents though.

I think that's the nametag for the intern who is supposed to be watching the X-Box, which, since it isn't in the picture I can only assume has been plundered.

  • 2 Disappointments Today!

Wow, so many to choose from...

    1) I had to wake up this morning, which involved me leaving the entombing feeling that my memory foam matress provides.

    2) I made the mistake of asking my wife if she was going to get on the treadmill this morning....in the married life, anywhere in the world, the universal truth is "Don't say that".

    3) My second oldest daughter apperantly has her first boyfriend, which I wouldn't mind, except he's "the fat kid" in her class. I mean, I have to face the eventuality of her growing up, but he's not just the fat kid, he's also the dumb kid, and the bully kid. I hated those kids in school...

    4) My Axim X50v won't sync with my Vista laptop via bluetooth, and everytime it tries I have to hard reset it.

    5) Traffic, it's epedemic.

    6) My HOA called about 10 minutes ago reminding me that I can't store household items in my garage. When I noted that they were transient items to be assimilated into the House Collective resistance was apperantly futile...

That's all I have so far this morning
