  • Silverlight - high CPU?

    the_corona wrote:
Am I the only one that finds silverlight completely unusable? It uses way too much CPU, enough in fact to have the audio go completely out of sync with the video.

For instance I was watching (well trying, but gave up) this:

Watching it in the windows, gives me about 80-90% CPU usage, but audio already goes out of sync. If I double click to go to fullscreen, than its at 100% all the time and I get like 10-15 fps on the video or something. I tested this on FF and IE7 on Vista 64, as well as on FF in XP SP2. CPU is an athlon 64 3200+ for the vista system and a sempron 3000+ for xp.

Is there something I can do, or is that just the way it is? Surely that can't be, I can playback 1080i video on the vista machine with less cpu usage Sad

    Please help

    Edit: fixed long URL

Watched it on a dual core w/ IE 7, had no problem.

  • REMIX07 Boston Videos

So we have all these new videos from REMIX07 Boston in the Screencasts section, and they are pretty much worthless, because the resolution is so bad that you can't see anything.

If it's not possible to provide them in better quality, it would be better to remove them completely. They just obscure the more interesting ones with good quality, e.g. from Beth Massi

I think they are not great, but for those of us who didn't make it to ReMix, they are better than nothing and I would like to see them stay.

Personally I bought a very fast SD card and that works much better than the USB.

++ IMO they're cheaper. you can pick up a 4gb for about £30 these days, you'd end up paying quite a bit for a 2gb memory stick these days.

Actually, they are both such a commodity that I find either of them vary cheap.

If you are lucky enought to have a Micro Center in your town, they usually have boxes of them (the MC house branded ones) sitting at the registers. I got my 2GB SD card for < $15 and I think that a 2GB USB drive as around $20

apparantly I can use either an SD card OR a USB stick?

Is one type of media better than the other?

I like the SD card because I don't have to take it out of my laptop when I put it in it's bag.

    Nope (for me).

If system has 1024+ of RAM, than xxxBoost is worthless. No improvement.

    I don't think that's true...

As I understand it (and I'm not expert) Ready Boost doesn't really replicate ram, it's really just used as a paging file. The good think about this is that it's much faster to read from a USB drive (or in my case an SD card) then the hard drive.

Having said that, I'm running Ultimate with 2GB of ram and a 2GB SD card for Ready Boost. For day to day stuff I don't notice a big differecne. If I'm doing audio editing it does seem to do some tasks faster and I can have more tracks open at once without things getting slow.

Good effort Darth, you managed to pretent to be a Microsoft advocate for almost a whole year!

I wondered how long it would take before the 'I have seen the light, Linux is better' post, but I never imagined it would take you so long to get to it.

Gotta hand it to him, he showed a real commitment to the part.

I haven't been to the VSLive! in Vegas, but the one in Orlando was pretty good.

Really? A co-worker of mine went to the Orlando VSLive and described is at "a worthless waste of time and money."

Actually, PDC being delayed helps me. It was going to be a fight-and-a-half getting it approved this fiscal year since I went to Tech Ed last year. If it happens next year I should be able to get it approved quite easily.

I went to the one in San Fran a while back and can somewhat agree however the fact that it is in Vegas would make it worthwhile.

Not for me. I'm from there, so I've pretty much done everything there AT LEAST twice. Tongue Out

Besides, my parents live there so I could very well go ropped into having to go home and do chores while I was there! :O

Still working on the future of this.

Don't worry, there are lots of people on DPE (the group the nine team is a part of) who care a lot about making PDC rock the house and they'll be shouting from the rooftops when they have more info to share.

In a way, rescheduling PDC because all the awesome stuff is getting here soon is a good thing! Real bits beat betas anyday

I'm already loving Silverlight, Expression Media Encoder, and Blend 2. David Shadle working in Expression Design and exporting to Silverlight XAML is hot.

Agreed, just wondering if I should hold off submitting my training request. The deadline for 2007 is fast approaching, and I don't want to be shut out.

Actually, it is is held next year, I have a better chance of my employer saying yes, so it's not all bad... Smiley
