Coffeehouse - Silverlight - high CPU?

the_corona wrote:

Am I the only one that finds silverlight completely unusable? It uses way too much CPU, enough in fact to have the audio go completely out of sync with the video.

For instance I was watching (well trying, but gave up)
this:

Watching it in the windows, gives me about 80-90% CPU usage, but audio already goes out of sync. If I double click to go to fullscreen, than its at 100% all the time and I get like 10-15 fps on the video or something. I tested this on FF and IE7 on Vista 64,
as well as on FF in XP SP2. CPU is an athlon 64 3200+ for the vista system and a sempron 3000+ for xp.

Is there something I can do, or is that just the way it is? Surely that can't be, I can playback 1080i video on the vista machine with less cpu usage

Please help
If you are lucky enought to have a Micro Center in your town, they usually have boxes of them (the MC house branded ones) sitting at the registers. I got my 2GB SD card for < $15 and I think that a 2GB USB drive as around $20

I don't think that's true...

As I understand it (and I'm not expert) Ready Boost doesn't really replicate ram, it's really just used as a paging file. The good think about this is that it's much faster to read from a USB drive (or in my case an SD card) then the hard drive.

Having said that, I'm running Ultimate with 2GB of ram and a 2GB SD card for Ready Boost. For day to day stuff I don't notice a big differecne. If I'm doing audio editing it does seem to do some tasks faster and I can have more tracks open at once without things
getting slow.

I don't think Orcas has a go live license yet, so I probably wouldn't write "production" code in it.

Well, yes. But this is not about UAC, per se, its about the whole Windows Vista experience.

I watch that video, and I can't help but laugh. Its kind of funny.

PS: plus, UAC on vista is an ongoing ordeal. So people will continue to talk about it. Its the human nature

I will add myself to the list of people who have been running Vista since it's launch and have not had the myriad issues that everybody else claims to have.

Visual Studio: check
Office: check
iTunes: check
Firefox: check
Roxio: check
Daemon Tools: check
VPC: check
Every other tool I use on a regular basis: check

And reguarding UAC: just because people complain about it doesn't mean it's useless. And just because YOU feel it's useless doesn't make it so. Unlike what a lot of people want to believe, you don't get prompted for every little thing; the list of tasks that
require Administrative privlidges in Vista is actually shorter than XP. Not that they comprimised security, they've just move the check for permissions closer to the action that requires it.

For example, at my current client (using W2k3 as the workstation OS) I am locked out of even looking at the dialog box to change time if I'm not logged in as a local Administrator. But, on Vista you can look at it and even change the time zone. You don't actually
get prompted to elevate UNTIL you try to change the time.

Coffeehouse - iTunes in Vista?

Hi all,

I was wondering if someone out there who is running iTunes in Vista could help me out;

I just installed the latest version of iTunes on my Vista Ultimate machine this weekend. I ripped a few CD's and then hooked up my nano. I was prompted to update the firmware in my nano, which I did. Everything seems cool. But, I tried to drag a song from my
library to the nano and I got the red "can't do this" circle. I was able to delete songs from the nano (at first I thought it might be complaining about there not being enough room) but I can't drag songs.

Previously I've been using my nano on a Windows XP Pro machine. I want to move everything to my Vista machine since the XP machine's motherboard has started to go wonky and I'm worried it's not long for this world.

I was thinking of heading over to the Apple stored and asking someone at the "Genius" bar, but last time I had to go there I had a bad experience when they found out I was a Windows user (torches and pitch-forks were invovled).

Is there a step I'm missing here?

Thanks!
