Remember the post, where we announced Build 2012?

BUILD 2012 will be on the Microsoft campus, and I know what you're thinking ... if it's not in some cavernous convention hall, then it must be a dialed-down version of last year's event, etc. ... but don't be confused: this will be unlike anything we've held on our corporate campus in a long time. More details to come .

Now you know what we meant by this.
Coffeehouse - F*ck! too soon

I am at a loss for words. In the weeks leading up to the launch of Channel 9 we did not know precisely what our content would be. We were working late, getting the site ready to go live and Bryn Waibel, one of our original developers came running down the hall saying, "there is only one space after a period!". "This is it, this is our content".

I thought he had lost his mind, but he went on to say how you have to see this video from Bill Hill and how he goes on to say how Windows is not the most important OS, not Linux, nor the Macintosh. We went to Bryn's office watched classic Bill Hill on Bryn's machine and we then knew what we'd show. Those videos became some of our first content and drove us to where we are today.

Thank you Bill. Bless your soul and thank you for your time with us here.

We are indebted to you.
Coffeehouse - Single Digit Community?

The Coffeehouse has always been a forum for Channel 9 "insiders" it ebbs and flows as users come and go. Individual posts here definitely doesn't get the traffic compared to our videos (a few thousand views for a popular coffeehouse posts versus 100,000 + for a popular video) and that is ok.

One of the things we've been thinking about is using the Coffeehouse as well for announcements about Channel 9. Like we did for the Ninies or for Channel 9 Live at Mix. The next step is being able to push these types of threads to the top of the homepage on Channel 9. We're coding up a simple way to that right now so we can give visibility to these posts on the homepage and also be able to do it for things like our new event session content too.

I love the coffeehouse and being able to chat with you all. I think it is important for us make sure people are aware it exists and can join in too.

Coffeehouse - Sharing is good for the Coffeehouse

Good thread.

When we built features for Channel 9, they can often fit into a number of buckets, like:

new areas of the site (like the new coding 4 fun area)

bug fixes

user suggestions

The feature above of the sharing via FB / Twitter was added to a number of areas in this minor update. We added the ability to share projects, show pages with the idea that when people do this it helps build awareness of the content to other users and more people coming to Channel 9.

One of the things we've often tried to do with the coffeehouse is treat these forum posts with more equality to our videos and with that allow people to share them on the same terms as they would other content.

Thanks for the feedback on what you want done with the forums.

-Jeff

Coffeehouse - Preview Descriptions On The Homepage

In the new Channel 9 design, we removed a lot of text from the homepage, which makes for a cleaner look. It probably would be helpful though to know more about a video before watching it. So we've added an 'info box' that appears when you hover over the thumbnail for a video.

We continue to add features, squash bugs, so please keep adding new items and voting up the ones you like over on Connect.

Windows Azure really helps us, we can stage, preview and deploy packages a lot more easily.
2. We have more people working now on Channel 9 than we have ever had. While we built this new version that you are now using. Duncan was the sole person updating production 9, now that rev 9 has shipped the entire team of Duncan, Cara, Geoff and Sampy are shipping bug fixes and building new features.

So you should be seeing more progress on making this a great place.

Site Feedback - Bring Back the Forums Dropdown!

(side note)

One thing you will notice is that we now have many folks working on the current site in production (Duncan, Sampy, Geoff, Cara and the rest of the team logging bugs, testing, etc.)

In order to keep the team focussed while we built out this new site, Duncan did the vast majority of bug fixes for what was in production (Channel 9 classic) and we kept the remainder of the team working strictly on rev 9 (what you are using now).

Now that we have shipped, we can have all hands on deck fixing bugs and building new features. Technically we've never had more people focussed on building Channel 9 not even in the earliest of days. Back then it was Bryn and Charles (and sometimes a little
bit of me too

Fun times ahead.
-Jeff
