Coffeehouse - Contacts, calendar, and e-mail - why can't they be connected?

So I've just installed RC1 of Vista and I'm at a crossroads. Where do I keep my personal information? I have the option of keeping it in Outlook (2007), Windows, or Windows Live Mail. They're all Microsoft products, but none of them work together.

1. Contacts. Outlook has it's address book, Vista has it's Contacts folder which holds VCards, and Windows Live Mail has it's own area for contacts. Messenger integrates with Windows Live Mail's contact set.

2. Calendar. Outlook has it's own one, Windows Calendar allows me to create them, and Windows Live Mail has it's own calendar (which you can't sync anymore... yay).

3. E-mail. Luckily I can use IMAP for most of my e-mail accounts. Except Windows Live Mail. I can either hit the website or I can do it in outlook. Windows Mail does not support HTTP e-mail accounts.

Anyway, here's my rant. I'm using 3 Microsoft products / technologies. Why aren't they helping me keep everything in sync?

Coffeehouse - Media Center + Dish Network + Extender

So I've done a little research and it looks like most MCE PCs come with IR Blasters, which basically convert MCE remote commands to STB commands.

So I'm assuming that hitting Channel Up on the Xbox remote while it is extending Media Center will send that command to the actual media center, which will convert it and "blast" it to the STB.

I'll have to do a little more research on this.

Coffeehouse - Media Center + Dish Network + Extender

I'm wondering about the ability to change channels while using a Media Center Extender (my XBox 360 in this case), when the actual Media Center / Dish Network STB is in a different room. I know that the STB is connected via Coaxial to my wall, and then
my TV is connected to the STB. The TV always has to be on Channel 3, and the STB is the one which changes channel.

The question is, I'm thinking about hooking the STB up to a Media Center PC in a different room and using my 360 as an extender. I'd watch TV basically through my extender. The question is, can the actual Media Center PC actually change the channel? If not,
is there a solution to this (fairly common I would assume) problem?

Coffeehouse - Buying a student car on a new interest free credit card?

Here are some things that I wanted to introduct / reiterate:

1. Of that $700 montly net income, none of it goes towards rent, food, or utilities. I have already saved up enough for two years worth.

2. I intend on paying off the entire balance before my introductory period expires.

3. The minimum monthly payment on a $4000 balance is $160 (calculating at 4%). It goes down from there. It would be very easy to save that up each month, put it aside, and put other extra income towards it as well. When summer begins in May, my income will
go from $700 to about $4000 per month. I have already saved up enough for the next school year, so all of that $4000 is expendable.

4. I disagree with maintenence costs. I used to drive 200 miles + per week during the summer and would only have to fill up every 1.5 weeks. The driving to and from campus would be considerably less that 200 miles per week.

5. I have a girlfriend who lives on campus. She doesn't care if I have a car or not, but I do like to go over there and back to my apartment every once in a while.

6. Some of my work shifts could end as late as 3 in the morning. Walking back might not be so fun.

7. I see that some of you are from Europe. I've lived in the UK and I know how easy it is to walk everywhere. In the US, most cities are not designed for walking. To get to campus, I have to cross a 5 lane highway with a light that's really out of the way.

So I guess my question has become, do credit card companies have stipulations against doing something like this? Would they be angry that I would only put on one or two charges on the card and pay them off before the period ends?

Right. I'd pay it off before the 0% interest period goes away. Even a $4000 car with 0% for 15 months (American Express Blue) would be about $267 per month, well within my net income.

Coffeehouse - Buying a student car on a new interest free credit card?

On a related question, I know that having additional credit cards increases your credit score (as long as your balance is under control), but does closing the credit card (after the introductory period) decrease your credit score to roughly its original

Coffeehouse - Buying a student car on a new interest free credit card?

I'm starting my Junior year at college here and after moving off campus into an apartment, I'm realizing that a car would sure speed up the 25 minute walk to campus.

There are a couple used car lots around campus. There's not much in my original price range ($2000-$3000). I was thinking today while I was walking to campus, why don't I increase my price range and put it on a new interest free credit card?

I work for the University doing ITS Help Desk duties, and I can pull in up to $700 or so a month. I've already saved up enough to pay for rent, food, and utilities for the entire school year. Virtually all of my net pay could go to paying off a car.

But bank loans are a pain. Most of the time you have to know the make, model, and year before you apply. By the time you hear back, the car is already gone.

But credit cards are different. You can have a huge available credit, put the entire car on it, and start paying off the minimum montly payments (is it 2% of your balance or 4% now?) Additionally, you are not tied down to certain payment terms. When I go back
home for the summer my job which pays QUITE a bit more could pay off the rest of my loan within a few weeks.

So my question is, would it be really stupid to apply for an interest free credit card (hoping for 12 months), putting a cheapo car on it, and paying it off before interest kicks in?

You need to watch the video on C9 about this.
It is C# 3.0... no core changes to C# .NET 2.0... watch the video?

Yeah I understand that. My comment might have been a little confusing. What I meant was that the .NET Framework 3.0 is still the old 2.0 compilers and CLR with the WinFX libraries. This will cause confusion when C# 3.0 (with LINQ enhancements, etc...) is released
(language, compilers, CLR, etc...).

I like it so far! So you have the 700w? Are you able to sync Outlook information into it?

Coffeehouse - Vista & Treo 700w

I just recieved my 700 and I'm having trouble syncing my Outlook information with Windows Vista.

I was having trouble to even get Vista to recognize it to begin with. I would plug it in, the device installation wizard would open, and then I would get some strange error message. I was going to take a screenshot and post it, but I got past that.

What I ended up doing was disconnecting the device and restarting the computer. Before I reconnected the device I ran Windows Mobile Device Center (which I couldn't find on the start menu unless I searched). I hit Ok on the dialog that came up and connected
my device. The device installation wizard pops open and I didn't recieve an error message!

LONG story short, the device is connected. I can browse it through Explorer and sync music to it via Windows Media Player. What I'm not able to do is sync Outlook appointments, contacts, etc...

Now when I connect the device the Windows Mobile Device Center pops up:

When I click on Set up your device I get this message:

I've searched and searched, but I can't seem to find this software. Does anyone know how to get this set up?

I just finished the keynote and I will agree that they are taking way too many jabs at M$. While unprofessional they are correct. Microsoft hasnt come up with anything innovative in the last 6 years. Simply copies of OS X and Google wares. Microsoft
is in trouble and not just from the Apple front but Lenovo is going to start offering a Linux desktop on its ThinkPad lines. Google is killing them on the desktop and web search department and pretty soon with their online word processor, spreadsheet and
calendar Microsofts other products are in dire straits. The writing is on the wall. I also think its funny that while Apple has been working on a major upgrade to their OS, Microsoft had a chance to wow everyone and work on shipping VPC for the Mac. Getting
a universal binary out the door and optimmizing it so it could beat the new kid on the block, Parallel and their old rival, VMWare. But they didnt. The cancelled VPC for Mac and announced Messenger. Now that was boring and probably a bad move.

Coffeehouse - Vista + 2GB of RAM = useful

I've been running the latest build of Vista on my 1.6Ghz Pentium M with 512MB of RAM (actually, I believe my video card was "sharing" 128MB of that). It actually ran pretty good. Start-up was a little slow, and opening Windows Live Mail Desktop took a
while, but all in all it was OK for a beta.

Anyway, I just installed 2GB of RAM and now it's flying! Whee!
