If someone can make a smartphone that doesn't need to be recharged everyday, I would be a happy camper.

This is what happens when "bright people who enjoy solving puzzles" design software. They make puzzles they would enjoy solving out of their software.

@turrican: Desktop computing as we know it has its roots in being a hobbyist interest. Now that personal computing is mainstream, it makes sense for the devices to change to accommodate mainstream computing needs, rather than hobbyist computing needs.
Hobbyists like to tinker with custom computing configurations and experiences, e.g., Linux desktop. Most people don't, e.g., Linux desktop.
There will always be a niche for hobbyist computing experiences, aka the long tail, but there is a much larger market in fulfilling the mainstream computing experience.

The only problem I have with Yahoo and Hotmail vs. Gmail is the huge banner-sized display ad. For whatever reason, the text-based Gmail ads do not faze me as much, perhaps because it is easier for me to ignore those than those visually noisy banner ads.
Yahoo and Hotmail have more marketshare than Gmail, because both existed earlier. Gmail also hurt their marketshare by making the service invite-only in the beginning. Being invite-only however contributed to the "exclusive" status of gmail addresses. That status persists even though anyone can sign up for a gmail email address nowadays.
Exclusivity also contributed to the quality ("non-spamness") of emails. Since anyone could sign up for yahoo and hotmail addresses, spammers would, and, consequently, some email from yahoo and hotmail addresses would be from spammers. This became a problem for gmail too once they dropped their exclusivity.

@Sven Groot: You could take a boat and then trains, though the TSA should not be a problem for you between Tokyo and Amsterdam.

Edit your HOSTS file not to use the ::1 IPv6 alias for localhost.
Edit: Ah never mind, sorry. I saw your request about needing the solution to be deployable after posting.
