Office 2007 introduced a new XML-based file format for Office. With LINQ to XML, Microsoft offers the ability to use language-based query against XML documents. When you combine these two technologies, you have the ability to search and manipulate Office documents in a completely new way.

This demo/lab showcases Office Open XML and the LINQ to XML technology. The lab covers the following topics:

• Opening Open XML documents programmatically
• Performing queries using LINQ to XML

MS Virtual Labs: Connected Applications with WCF and WF [MS Virtual Labs: Connected Applications with WCF and WF]

Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) and Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) are relatively new technologies, having only been officially released with .NET 3.0 in November 2006. Despite this, each technology has received some significant updates for Visual Studio 2008. For WCF, the most visible update is the new tooling that enables developers to be more productive in creating and testing services. For WF, many of the improvements revolve around integration with WCF.

The purpose of this demo/lab is to show the new tooling for WCF and WCF/WF Integration. The demo covers the following topics:

• Windows Communication Foundation Test Server & Client
• Building a Workflow Service.

MS Virtual Labs: Multi-Targeting in Visual Studio 2008 [MS Virtual Labs: Multi-Targeting in Visual Studio 2008]

Multi-targeting is a new feature in Visual Studio 2008 that allows developers to choose which .NET Framework they want to target for a given project. Available choices are 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5, and you may change your selection after a project has already been created. The IDE filters selectable features and the build system generates appropriate warnings based on whether a particular feature is available in the target platform.

The purpose of this demo/lab is to show how multi-targeting is implemented in Visual Studio 2008. The lab covers the following topics:

• Multi-targeting in the New Project dialog
• Target Framework-based filtering in Add New Item and Add Reference dialogs
• Target switching via project Properties dialog • Build- and compiler-generated errors and warnings based on Target Framework

The WPF designer in Visual Studio 2008 has been radically improved from the one that found its way into Visual Studio 2005 following the release of .NET 3.0. Capable and intuitive, the designer allows developers to accomplish many tasks through graphical manipulation, whereas before nearly everything had to be done by hand-coding XAML. Productivity takes a huge step forward with the time saved using the new WPF designer.

Doubtless many organizations will have existing Windows Forms applications and controls that they’ll want to continue to use. Fortunately, they can leverage the power of WPF and still protect their existing investments with WPF/Windows Forms interoperability. This technology allows WPF applications to host Windows Forms controls, and Windows Forms applications to host WPF content.

The purpose of this demo/lab is to showcase the features of the WPF designer and basic WinForms interoperability. The demonstration covers the following topics:

• The WPF Designer
• The WindowsFormsHost control

This screencast shows how you can combine a set of Microsoft applications/tools and technologies to author, develop and host media content that can be embedded into any Microsoft Office document supporting VSTO.

We use Expression to author the media, Silverlight Streaming for hosting and streaming the media content, Visual Studio and VSTO to develop the hosting Office document for embedding the media content.

The theme is around creating user/instruction manuals with enhanced media content to increase user experience.
