One of the features of the Xbox 360 that doesn't get much press is the range of cheap downloadable games on Xbox Live Arcade. My theory is that these games don't get much press because their target market is "casual gamers", with a $5-10 price-point. And no self-respecting l33t hardcore game reviewer would choose to review one of those, over a $60 game title that's been PR-blitzed down his throat.

So it's great to see that the winner of the Independent Game Festival (for all those game shops who don't have massive PR budgets) will be downloadable for the Xbox 360. Fingers crossed that this is the start of a trend - it would be awesome if smaller game producers were able to earn a decent living from Xbox Live Arcade.

"The truth" does not consist of jumping into every thread on the front page and saying "Microsoft SUXX0RS, d00dz!". You can start adding some signal to that noise, or you can watch your repetitive posts being deleted (and then your account being nuked, and then after that your IP address being banned). We've opened it up to everyone, according to CNET. Anti-spyware, anti-virus, firewall, and system tuning, all from a web page. Although my advice is not to try the full-system virus scan "just because you can", at least not if you're already got a reputable anti-virus software installed. I mean, it's neat that the thing runs from a web page, but it still brought my old machine to its knees :) Yay for a functioning Cancel button!

We shipped the public beta of System Center Capacity Planner earlier this afternoon. This is the project I've been working on for the past five years, first in Microsoft Research, then proving it internally in MSN, and now shipping it as a product.

It's not pure .NET - we stole a nifty C++ visualization control from another team - but the rest of the code is C#. Just thought that .NET naysayers might like to see that :)

Only hard-core sysadmins who like thinking about the performance of their Exchange 2003 and MOM 2005 deployments need bother actually downloading the thing - but if you do, please tell us what you think of it on the forums. And yes, I'm a mod over there too...

The old wiki home page was getting too big and unwieldy, so I've moved each section into its own sub-page:

PeopleAndPlaces - keeping track of who we are and where we go
ProductFeedback - bug reports, suggestions, rants and raves about Microsoft products

I've also called out that several Microsoft teams now have their own independent wikis - these sit on the Channel 9 servers but aren't part of the Channel 9 wiki namespace, so you may not have seen them before:

Microsoft is extending the beta program for its Windows OneCare subscription service to the general public. Interested parties can go to http://beta.microsoft.com/, sign in with their Microsoft® Passport Network credentials, type in OneCare (case sensitive) when prompted for the guest ID, and follow the instructions from there. Windows OneCareis Microsoft's forthcoming hosted security service, comprised of firewall, antivirus, antispyware and data-backup functionality.

Charles has given a few Channel 9 Microsofties limited moderation powers (I won't say who else, in case they prefer not to exercise them).

Unlike the Channel 9 core team, we don't have full superpowers - I can't ban users, or leap tall buildings in a single bound, or stop a speeding bullet. But we can lock and delete threads and posts, so hopefully the abusive ones won't survive as long.

Since I'm also one of the more vocal Microsofties on Channel 9, this creates the interesting problem of how do you know when I'm being me, and how do you know when I'm being a moderator. For now, I'll post in red when I'm wearing my moderator hat. If I say anything in black, that's just me - so go ahead and treat me as normal, insult me, make me new avatars, etc etc. If I say something in red, that's official superhero-sidekick-moderator mode, e.g. "I locked this thread, don't start it again".

And no, I don't plan to watch every thread, or be on IM 24 hours a day :) But I do skim all the titles, so the current tactic of using the equivalent of "Hey, moderators!" as a thread title should still work to get my attention (or one of the other superhero-sidekicks).

We got your press releases right here: "High Definition" mice (1000 dpi) including the "Laser Gaming" mouse, and a "best yet" ergonomic keyboard

Stuff I personally like about the keyboard: F-lock status is now persistent across reboots (at last!), it's USB, inverted-T cursor key layout, and back to the 3x2 arrangement of editing keys.

Update: Seattle PI article about the keyboard shows the "gull wing" shape. Dunno when http://www.microsoft.com/hardware will be updated.

Just noticed this announcement on Dan Fernandez's blog. The Shareware Starter Kit like a nice set of components that are commonly found in shareware applications: splash screen, product key purchase, activation, registration, feedback, exception reporting.

Basically, all the boring plumbing stuff that you'd otherwise have to spend time implementing. Time that you can now spend on your fabulous shareware idea instead.

Oh, and they're starting some kind of shareware contest using the starter kit - check out the PDC forums

Very nifty. Kudos to the .NET teams for this one!
