  • why are gui elements (wpf controls) still so slow?

If a simple list box demand cutting edge CPU and graphics card performance in order to display smoothly, then something has gone very, very wrong in the design process. I yesterday tried out "Avalon patient monitor"-application on wpf.netfx3.com, and I was really surprised at how even just moving the application window was slow, and the animations in the listview were just a joke - to me, the performance was totally unacceptable, and it barely even contained any data. I was under the impression that WPF would be something to look forward to... What a different between all the marketing hype on WPF and reality...

As far as I'm aware there is nobody called Redmond ...  There are however a lot of hardworking people who can't account for every single scenario in the world ...
Get real!  If you don't like it as it is either let the Vista team know through one of their blogs or write the damn thing yourself, just give us all a break and stop whinging !

I like your attitude, Davemc! I will start programming immediately.
It would be nice however to know how many developers it took to come up with a scheme to enable and disable the weather forcast depending on what language is selected for non-Unicodeprograms, and combine it with the language selected in Date display format. Tongue Out

Thanks Brian for the tip, but if you are refering to iWeather, then it's excatly the same: no weather for swedish speaking people in Finland... [C]
I just feel so angry, and I don't know who to contact at Microsoft to report this blatant case of injustice. [6]

Yay, I just got Vista Ultimate, and it's cool to finally have the final product. Installation went super smooth.

What bugs me though is the Weather Gaget. If I choose to display regional format as Finnish (Finland) and set Language for non-unicode programs to Finnish (Finland), Vista allows me to view the weather (in English, but still).

If I set my regional format to Swedish (Finland), I am no longer allowed to view the weather, instead Vista sees fit to display "Service not available in your language or region".

It just makes me so mad, so very mad. Who the hell is Redmond to decide for me what languages I can master, or maybe I'm not worthy of the weather unless I speak Finnish?

It should work fine. Are you running Office 2003 and Office 2007 b2tr on the same machine?

I did a full repair on Office and now, Outlook preview works! Great! Big Smile

Are you sure you have all the access rights to that file? Maybe you have list but not read....

Sorry, it just does't work... I have maximum rights on all files. If I use the Deskbar Search Box in the Taskbar, it just WON'T let me open files that reside on the other computer, and does not show a shortcut menu when leftclicking...

However, if I press the green "Search Desktop"-button, and locate the file in the shell window, I can open, edit and save the files just fine. However, the shell result window does NOT show previews for files on the other computer???

The scenario is this: 2 computers, both running XP Professional. Connected through a router. Both computers have the same user account names with identical passwords, both administrator accounts. Sharing is set to everyone, doc folder
    permissions full for all admins.

Is there something wrong with this config? I can access and edit all files through the shell.

Is there a place for getting help and submitting bugs for desktop search?

  • if (WDS.Version == "3.0") { Console.WriteLine("Horray!"); }

Here one bug and one glaring omission I found without even looking (on XP SP 2 + IE7 + Office 2003 and 2007 btr2) ...

    1. When using the UNC-plugin, any file you find that resides on another computer with deskbar search cannot be opened, and has no shortcut menu!!! When you click it, NOTHING HAPPENS.

    2. Whatever happened to outlook e-mail preview??? In the desktop search windows there used to be previews for e-mails in the preview pane. No more with Desktop Search 3....

    3. And still, if you have contacts in outlook with just Company Name, deskbar search omits the company name, and just shows blank rows.

  • Adobe photoshop elements trial 5 and Vista RC-2

Has anyone tried to install Adobe Photoshop Elements 5 trial on Vista RC-2. When I try to launch the application I get "an error has been detected with  a required application library and the product cannot continue"...

Just great, after downloading 450 MB all I get is an error message. Thank you very much, Adobe...

  • Office 2007 Beta 2Technical Refresh Available Now!

Oh no, I upgraded to Office 2007 from 2003 on Vista. At first, everything seemed to work. Then, Vista found 12 new updates for Office 2003 (why, because I only left Access 2003), and I restarted my computer to install them.

Now, my installation is totally broke. Microsoft Office Professional Plus and Microsoft Office 2003 installers are running hot anytime I start an Office 2007 application, like they where trying to trash my hard drive, and it takes forever to open any app.

In Outlook  I get the error "The Office open XML file Normal cannot be opened because there are problems with the content". The Inbox works, the Sent items folder is totally broke.

Word finds "unreadable content in Normal" etc. etc.

Looks like have have to do a System Restore... This must be my worst installation experience ever... starting with the odd delays in Vista when trying to launch the downloaded installtion files, and ending with an unusable pile of apps.

EDIT: Did a repair of Office 2007, and now everything works except my Outbox in Outlook (The messaging interface has returned an unknown error). But very impressed with Excel and Word!

  • How to change the User Profile Path in Vista RC1

    ScottOW wrote:
You can change the path to the individual folders by opening windows explorer, selecting your profile in the Folders pane and right-clicking on each of the folders.  For example, right click on Documents, Properties and you can change the "Location".
    Scott

Yes, you can redirect your own folders, but you can't redirect the folders under C:\Users\Public (although the text says you can, but you actually can't!)

Also, the indexer isn't smart enough to realize the new location of your documents. And beware on multiuser computers, when adding your documents to the index in the new location, you might expose them to all users (I don't exactly know how the indexer determines what to show to all users, what not to...)

  • Windows Desktop Search 3.0 beta 2 is live!

    Ok, thanks! Smiley

I am 100% sure that the indexer has indexed all my files. I have used Desktop Search in XP for a very, very long time. The behaviour occurs on XP and Vista. The Indexer on both operating systems  ignores exactly the same files, those that were moved into the music folder by Bearshare. Every time I have installed a new version of Desktop Search, I have always rebuilt the index.

However, I have not found that any other files would have been ignored by the indexer.

The Oncreation-thing sounds possible in a way, but it still doesn't explain why the files don't get indexed say a month later when I rebuild the index.
