Coffeehouse - Star Trek 2008 Prequel

"as I recall you can't do Warp 10"

You can do a lot more than Warp 10 if you're a "Traveller" (from one of the better TNG episodes, I think it was titled something like "Where no man has gone before" -- is that original or what?), or with a "Trans-Warp Drive" like the one Janeway used to get
partway home before she broke it, or with the space-folding "coaxial warp drive" that Tuvok gets (illegally) from the Sikarians, but they couldn't get it to work because they hadn't taken anti-neutrinos into account...

Coffeehouse - Best Profiler for .NET

I can't say which one is the best, but I use Scitech's .Net profiler. It works pretty well for my purposes (mostly hunting for memory leaks).

Coffeehouse - The DaVinci Code...

ScanIAm wrote:

So, then, the alternative is to go back to believing that god created it all, right?

Science is not meant to replace religious faith.

Seems to me that either one takes an equal amount of faith to believe.

I love science, and I try to keep up with the leading edge of research. I think science and faith can coexist peacefully, though they certainly have conflicts, particularly when science leads people to deny the existence of God. I think science replaces faith
in God, in many people's minds and hearts. But often those people are not scientists, and don't know much about science. On the contrary, they are just putting blind faith in science, and the closest they get to actually studying a scientific discipline
is reading Popular Science or Scientific American.

Speaking of science, one topic I am fascinated with is the relativistic effects of black holes. I know this is a little off-topic, but what the hey. I think it's fascinating that when an object falls into a black hole, time (from our perspective) stops
for that object, and it never actually gets past the event horizon (from our perspective). But from the perspective of the object itself, time continues on just as it always has, and the object falls on through the event horizon and on to the singularity
at the center, but as soon as it hits the event horizon the rest of the universe has aged to infinity. Studying topics like relativity, and quantum physics, and string theory, don't reduce my faith in God -- they actually make it stronger, because I believe
I see the fingerprints of God in these parts of his creation.

Coffeehouse - The DaVinci Code...

ScanIam wrote "You've shown me no evidence, whatsoever, that your god exists..."

Ok, I guess you're right, there is no evidence that God exists. So, help me understand what I now believe: the universe just came into being from nothing, just by accident, because of quantum foam and the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, and the probability
that given an infinite amount of time, it was inevitable that the whole thing would just happen all by itself. Or maybe there are an infinite number of universes created by the big bang, and we just happen to live in the one that is suitable for human life.
Either way, it's all a big accident, and the reason we are even aware of it is because another big accident happened long ago that caused the creation of life, which also accidentally evolved into self-aware beings capable of understanding all of this, based
on after-the-fact study of the results of the accidents.

Oh, wait... I'm having trouble with my new faith. It's just so hard to keep believing...

rjdohnert wrote: "At some point you have to use common sense...."

Common sense doesn't tell you anything, really. Common sense is just a term that describes your own personal collection of prejudices.

Common sense leads us to believe many things that are totally incorrect. Everything you believe is wrong on the most basic level. Ask enough questions about anything and you will eventually hit the "I don't know" point; the point of faith, where you must
accept what someone else tells you about the subject. You have faith, even if you don't think you do. Do you know for certain that molecules consist of atoms, and that atoms are made of quarks, or do you believe it because you read it or heard it? Every
answered question just leads to another unanswered one.

Everyone believes what they believe because they have faith in the source of their information, not because they have enough first-hand knowledge of any topic to know the complete truth.

Some people decide to accept the writings of the Bible as a source of information that they believe in. Others don't accept the same, but it's not because of what they know, or because they have more common sense. It's because they have decided to put their
faith in other things, or in nothing. It's a decision based on our prejudices and our world view.

If God really does exist, and if he really has sent Jesus into the world to rescue us (as I do believe), then it really does make a huge difference what I believe. If he doesn't exist and the Bible is all just stories that are man-made, then the worst that
can happen to me is... nothing. Call me a fool if you want to, but how can I lose?

Coffeehouse - Sun president: PCs are so yesterday

Sun has always seemed to have almost the right idea.

Services will be big, everyone knows that. How does he go from that to "PCs are so yesterday, everyone will be using cellphones instead"? Services aren't worth much without a decent user interface. And as much as I like mobile stuff, the little screens are
just barely usable for most things, and not a lot of fun. Sure they will improve; some are already sporting 640x480 screens, but they are still tiny, and to be readable, the font sizes must be so big that you can't really show a "normal" 640x480 on them.

The user experience is what counts, not the technology or service that provides the experience. I think replacing PCs with cellphones will happen around the same time TVs are replaced with cellphones. Approximately never.
