This week, Jim Wang from the ASP.NET team and James Senior talk about WebMatrix Beta 2 and take a look at some of the new things—the Theming helper and Facebook Social Plugins helpers—that make it easy to add functionality to your websites. Additionally, we take a look at the Package Manager included in WebMatrix, which makes it easy to download and use helpers and templates—in fact, any assets—when building your websites. The Package Manager uses the new NuPack package management features, which have recently been getting a ton of buzz on the Twitterverse.

Web Camps TV #5 - Building your own WebMatrix Helpers

In this episode of Web Camps TV, James is joined by Erik Porter, PM on the ASP.NET team (and@HumanCompiler on twitter). Erik is responsible for the Helpers that go into the WebMatrix tool. You can think of Helpers as shortcuts used to build apps more quickly, and these shortcuts are broken into two different types: UI Helpers and API Helpers. As the names suggest, UI Helpers make it easier to render out bits of a website's UI, and API Helpers wrap other functionality from services you want to use in your applications. Some examples of popular WebMatrix Helpers include Facebook, Twitter, and Recaptcha, as well as some other fundamental ones like Database access, Membership, and Security.

In this episode, we look at how to build your own Helpers, making it easier for you and other developers to build websites. Erik takes us through building an IE9 Pinned App Helper, and the several approaches he discusses are all valid ways of building Helpers, including

Using CSHTML pages
Using CS classes
Using @helper syntax

Building WebMatrix Helpers makes sense whether you are trying to foster a developer community or just looking to make your own job easier by having helpers for repetitive code tasks.

Web Camps TV #4 - IE9 Beta Special - Behind the Scenes of the WebVizBench.com Demo App

This week James Senior speaks to Josh Santangelo from Stimulant about their shiny new HTML 5 app built specifically for today's IE9 Beta launch.

The app takes data from Seattle's community-based radio station, KEXP, and visualizes their playlists in cool ways. As well as being drop-dead-gorgeous, the app shows off some of the new HTML 5 features implemented in IE9 Beta, including Canvas, SVG, Custom Fonts, Video, and more.

Josh also explains what it was like to apply his existing dev skills to developing HTML and JavaScript apps, including editing jQuery in Visual Studio 2010 with its powerful intellisense/autocomplete features.
