Wow! To fix the iPhone texting bug you need to download a 297.9 MB package. Seems like Apple has nothing in place to do hotfixes on their software... :S

Just to recap. This is an isolated error that they fixed by adding more error handling.

Superior software... yeah. I would hope Apple would start the copy machines once and implement at least something that allows to push down smaller updates.

And once again. It's storing it in the roaming profile. Excellent :P

Where are the iPhone OS updates (for example from 2.0 to 3.0) stored in Windows after being downloaded by iTunes? You have one guess. Exactly... how could it be otherwise: in AppData\Roaming. 277 MB! Nice, Apple! That's a lot of fun if you are in an Active Directory.

And now, who claims Windows is slow?

I got it installed and I'm pleased to see that the application is antispyware (seems to have shutdown defender) + antivirus in one and that the updates (including the virus/spyware definitions) come via Windows Update. Nice move!

Who else is giving it a try?

Hi guys. Is it possible to fix the escape codes bug somehow? If people use quotes in the title of a post it always gets escaped. I know that there were some issues with people abusing escape codes. But how about creating a safe list of escape codes?

Researchers at the University of St. Andrew in Scottland found a new way to create batteries that last 10 times longer than the current state-of-the-art batteries. That could be the break-through for electric cars!

Well, I finished studying a week ago (yeah I'm a Diplomingeneur (engineer with diploma) or Master of Science, what you like more) and I'm moving back home for a few months until I move again to work full time at Microsoft.

We had to pack my mattress today. But I don't have conventional cords... after looking around we figured that a "geek" room has cords all over the place... just not conventional ones. We then used two of them: a LAN cable and an Xbox 360 cable. And that's how it looks like:

The Xbox 360 cable seems to hold very strong and was easier to knot than the LAN one. Great work Microsoft :D

Since it is already out for a while... Who has already installed it? What's new that you like the most? I have seen that they included some nice new backgrounds and that the sign-in dialog has also a nice new background... I like the visual touch :)

Any bugs spotted?

I stumbled upon an interesting class in mscorlib: System.LOGIC. It's internal and has only two methods that are not used by any other class (at least Reflector is not showing any reference to them)... Lost in space or is this used by internal stuff that's just not made it to the public version?

Have you found similar stuff in the BCL?

Hi all. I got a problem here. I have a combobox (.NET WinForms) that exposes all countries that we have on our world. The DropDownStyle is set to DropDownList to make sure that nobody adds its own country. Now I want to enable the following scenario:

A user wants to select a country. He selects the country combobox and starts entering I, then t, then a, then l, then y. The combobox should remember all keys that have been typed in and select Italy.

Right now the following happens: You press I and the first country starting with I is selected. Then you press t and the first country starting with T is selected etc.

Does somebody know how to enable my scenario? I have searched for a while but couldn't find anything that works. My problem is that I can't change the DropDownStyle to something else!

The forums and home page is screwed up in IE... The Coffehouse and all the other forums are incredible slow to open. I even get "Service is not available" messages from time to time. Are you guys under a DOS?

Threads that I have visited are not longer marked as visited. This started yesterday. I signed out and signed in but the behaviour is still present. Is this a known issue?

Edit: It's working now after another sign out and sign in... weird.

At MIT a team around Tomás Palacios (Assistant Professor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science) created a prototype of a new chip that builds upon a material called graphene. The material has been discovered in 2004 and is similar strong as diamond but has the best breaking strength known to men.

Chips build with this material are able to run around 500-1000 GHz and from the report it seems, since building chips with this material is similar to how chips are build today, that within the span of a few years we could have these chips in normal computers.

Bye-bye multi-core? I hope not... imagine 8+ cores where each one runs with 1000 GHz :D

You probably know that a few days back there was a gun rampage in Germany. A young frustrated guy went into his ex-school and killed 16 people (including the ones that he killed while he escaped and, in the end, himself). After searching the house where he lived the police found several weapons (his dad had 16 legal ones). Further they found out that the guy played FarCry 2 the night before the happening (probably FarCry 2 is creating a log or something).

Now they started a debate about ego shooters, they call them "killer games". Right now the legal situation is that you only should be allowed to play them if you are 18+. Some voices want to completely ban them from the market because they see them as the cause for young people acting crazy. I don't know what to think about it...

Personally, I don't play them often but they have never influenced me so that I was more aggressive after having played one of them.

What's your opinion on this topic?

I find it very interesting because Vista, in the end, is again only reduced to how it looks like. This makes it very clear again that people don't care about the underlying innovation, they take that as granted, and only reduce everything to the look and feel. Very nice stuff that can be learned from it.

What's the benefit of tabbed browsing in Windows 7? Let's take IE8 and Chrome. Both run each tab in an own process. And Windows 7 offers the new (and I think awesome) preview feature for individual tabs. Tabs look no different than windows when hovering over the taskbar and previewing.

Seems like Windows itself fixed one of the issues why tabbed browsing was invented (cluttered taskbar). And the issue with the usage of less memory and fast starting of new website instances is nearly gone since each tab runs as individual process...

Now what's the benefit of using tabbed browsing? What do you think?
