Well Rossj, that's just part of the point they're trying to make (I think, anyway). If you use Windows every day - all the time you're numbed out. You don't realise that you're constatntly clicking and clicking at odd and erronious messages. Look at the mac video in comparison. The only 'warning' they got was after they DL'ed the program. No 'genuine' check and no errors in their installation instructions/installation packages. I thought it was a good and fair comparison.

  • cool animation at comingzune.com

Sorry if this is a repost, but I saw this animation the other day and found out, it comes from comingzune:

    in quicktime (of course)

Too bad. I'll wait for a version I can play on my computer.

Maybe you should get a Mac. I headr you can play quicktime AND windows media on those computers...

    ROFL !!!

Sorry, Ross, just couln't help myself...

  • Will you upgrade?

Of course I will upgrade. I will be forced to when I buy my next PC next year. I don't have much of a choice I want to run Windows it will have to be Vista...

Stevie Jobs has always been a sore loser.  Remember the infamous video where he claims Microsoft has no taste and dont bring culture to their product.

How exactly is he a sore loser for vocing his opinion? Mind you, there are plenty of MS people out there who actually agree with him on this point.

Why would anyone on Linux even want Office for Linux? I thought the whole benefit of OO.org was it's support for the ODF?, maybe I'm wrong?

Because its easier to pitch a proven product like Office to the head honcho's.  A native version of Office for Linux will only help furthure secure Linux in the enterprise.

Linux IS secure in the enterprise, get used to it. Remember the old saying, "if you can't beat them, join them"?

The article talks about how it is inevitable that MS Office will have a Linux version (similiar to how there is an Apple version of Office right now). I thought we weren't going to cooperate with the Linux crowd. Is this a legit article or wishful thinking on the author's part?

    Dearest DarthVista,

go back to, say, 1990, when Office was first introduced. FOR THE MAC! Then they did the unthinkable and ported it to Windows. What were they thinking?!! Just because there were actually people using Windows? They actually catered to a new, emerging market. And guess what, making Office for Windows wasn't the worst idea MS has had! Porting it to Linux makes absolute sense. More and more people are using it, even governments. Rather than leave the market to OpenOffice they'll fight for market share. It's smart in 2 ways. They'll make even more money and they'll compete against OO on a platform where OO has no real competition.
Think about what you really wanted to say with the terms US, THEM, LINUX CROWD and so forth. Don't make C9 a flame-board!

I think a relatively good analogy here would be a car alarm. The insurance company forces you to put one in even against your will, but if you forget your alarm code, can you blame the alarm for not having an easy workaround?
You are, to continue the analogy, trying to hot-wire your computer.

I think the blame here lies with HP. They should make it easy to get replacement media. If you have WGA, the media itself becomes a lot less valuable without the corresponding legit key anyway.

Failing that, the simplest way is to torrent the proper SKU that you have a key for.

I don't really think your analogy quite fits. My insurance company doesn't require me to have anything for my new Mercedes. An alarm is not tied to a financial compensation.
WGA is, however, required to start your legally purchased windows. It's more like losing the car key and having to pay 20-40% of the car price to get a replacement.
Any yes, HP is also to blame. 50$ for a new CD with the media on it is redicolous. I would do exactly what you did if my primary system was still windows. Download a pirated version and keep my scratched CD and key handy just in case someone comes knockin'!

  • DTS, Windows 2003 and FoxPro

    Hi guys and gals!

I've run into a pickle of sorts. I'm trying to get a COM component (created with Vidual FoxPro 9), registered in the Component Services MMC to run under IIS6, Windows 2003 Std. Edition.

I've eliminated lots of possibilites but seem to be stuck on what looks like a permissions problem. I created a dedicated user who is to execute the COM Package, the Website and the ApplicationPool associated with that website. If this user is a member of the Admin group, everything works fine. If he's anything less than an Admin it won't run. All I get in the borwser is a huge 'Service Unavailable' message.

Get this: If I access this COM component through a regular windows forms app (.exe) everything runs fine with this user NOT being an admin. He only needs the admin privilages in order to work with IIS6. btw. I'm using ASP1.1 here, no dotnet. After all, it's just a createobject command and nothing more.

I know FoxPro is a rare dev tool, but maybe someone out there running W2k3 has some experience running other COM components and might me able to shed some light on this problem.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
    Matt
