Why is it that an Explorer crash still wipes the icons in the system tray?
Obviously since the taskbar lives within Explorer, but what I am asking is why hasn't there been a "middle man" established to house the tray icons and display them? And possibly have the system tray "plug into" this middle man (whatever its implementation may be) to display an 'unchanged' system tray in the event of an Explorer crash.

Also, as a sidenote I think at one point in time before the "Reset" the system tray icons were living in the sidebar (or did my memory completely miss on that?) If that was the case, I suspect that the sidebar taking on a slightly different role had something to do with deciding to keep the system tray in the taskbar, but why wasn't what I suggested above implemented?

I hope I am not the only one that shares this frustration.

in reply to Major Annoyance with the System tray

<evnet:views>2369</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/254630/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>So it's 2007 and we're at another Windows release with Vista. When testing as local admin (with UAC on), this isn't an issue, but when testing as local user (the machine is running Windows Vista and is part of a Windows 2003 domain) IMAPI is denying access to the CDRW drive. The same thing happens in Windows Explorer; now I've read about a group policy that you can set and I've already tried it. The group policy I'm referring to can be found in: User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer\ with the name "Remove CD Burning Features", the default is "Not Configured" and I've set this to enabled and logged off and back on (I haven't restarted the machine as I'm connecting to it via Terminal Services but I guess I will give restaring a try tomorrow). Does anyone know of a definitive way to get CD burning in Vista as a standard user, or is this a pipe dream and not possible? Maybe the restart while setting the setting to "Disabled" will fix it, but I will have to wait until tomorrow to find out. Otherwise if you know what I'm missing I'd appreciate it.

Edit: A restart didn't help, so I take it that policy is only for denying the use of the CD Burning ability, not granting it (by disabling). So far my only option seems to elevate for this, but it's almost crucial that this be avoided.

Thanks.

in reply to CD Burning in Vista as a standard user

<evnet:views>10515</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/254450/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>I am writing an application that plays nice in Vista when it comes to UAC and running as a standard user, however the application needs to be able to record CDs. Explorer.exe is not letting my score come up past 5! I think if there was an option to just exclude certain executables from this report it would (at least make me feel better) make sense in certain situations when you want to see how well your system is faring over time.

I guess we have to wait until SP1 comes out to (hopefully?) see some improvement in Explorer.exe's stability.

</evnet:previewtext>

<trackback:ping>http://channel9.msdn.com/254365/Trackback.aspx</trackback:ping>

SQL Server Management Studio Express [SQL Server Management Studio Express]

Anyone else have any issues with SSMSE ? My issue (I'm running Vista 32bit) is that the program just crashes:

[Window Title]
Microsoft Windows

[Main Instruction]
SQLWB - SQL Server Management Studio has stopped working

[Content]
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
