I don't think I want to sign it, I wouldn't want the government to do anything about it (and I don't think they would). I think involving the gov in something like this may put off investment from tech (or any other) companies in this country.
Having said that, maybe it will get some media attention around the issue which might not be a bad thing.

MS is not doing this only in the UK, they're doing this also in other european countries. In Italy Vista Ultimate retail costs about 2x times the american price.

599$* 1,27 ($ to € change) - 399$ = 361$

361/399 = 0,90.

Vista Ultimate retail in Italy is 90% more expensive than it is in America.

The OEM versions of Vista instead have prices similar to the american ones! It looks like MS wants to force people to change computers instead of buying a new vista, or something like that.

Unless they have a hidden strategy for losing marketshare I don't understand why the hell they want to force all the MS enthusiasts to stay away from Vista upgrades because of the high prices.

The additional problem here for MS is that the high price & losing sales is self perpetuating[6]. That is, as an IT Manager, if I'm not willing to pay for the upgrade, I cannot go through the pain barrier or learning process of the new OS. As a result,
I'm more likely to advise colleagues and friends to stick with XP (nevermind the implications for the company I work for).

Coffeehouse - UK Online Petition to Prime Minister Re USA v UK Vista Pricing

Apologies if this has been posted already (I couldn't trace any post).

Tony Blair normally does what he wants :Obut at least the petition will come across his radar.
here is a huge difference in the price that people in the US and the UK are paying for Windows Vista the new Microsoft Operating System. As an example of this, in the UK a full copy of Vista Ultimate would
cost you £350, in the US it would cost you £195. The US version of Vista is exactly the same as the UK version. There is no difference. Therefore I can see no reason for there to be such a huge difference in prices between the UK and the US other than Microsofts
belief that the UK customers will pay more than their US counterparts. I ask people to sign this petition in the hope that the Prime Minister will bring pressure to bear on Microsoft over their pricing as it is my belief they are simply overcharging the people
of the UK and therefore are ripping us off.
On the face of it no but experience suggests that once office 2007 is used in the real world, real issues will rise to the surface. Some will be major and others just irratating (e.g. cannot use ctrl+insert for copy in the preview pane in Outlook 2007

ok some of you may have already seen this
blog

So here's my question. As a corporate customer using Office 2000, I have 3 options available to me:-

1. Upgrade to office 2007 now but downgrade to Office 2003 until SP1 arrives. Here I'm assuming that the next version of Office is over 2 years away
2.Upgrade to office 2007 now with software assurance but downgrade to Office 2003 until SP1 arrives. Here I'm assuming that the next version of Office is within 2 years
3. Do option 2 but in 12 months time. Here I'm assuming that the next version of Office is over 2 years away but I handicap my users and development programs for another 12 months
4. Do option 2 now but pay to extend SA in 2 years time

Option 2 or 3 will cost me ~£24k extra over option 1.
Option 4 will cost me ~£48k extra over option 1.

Chance are that option 1 is the best bet but who else is betting on Office 14 not arriving until 2010:s
Yes, very sorry about that. I work in the US-Sub so there is that to contend with. I don't have the budget to do WW campaigns. There is also a tax issue as well that I wasn't prepared to deal with. If a user decides they want to take both the Vista and Office
offer it is a taxable event here in the US since the combined value is over $600. That requires a W9 that we send to the user to be signed and sent back via fax or snail mail before we can ship the second product. Since I can't handle this type of thing for
every country in the world you can see where my problem was with trying to do this world wide.
Hey Mark, i'm so glad you're part of the community as you give great insights, and this isn't an attack at you really though it may come across as that of which i'm sorry.

Microsoft is a huge organisation you have what 60-70k employee's worldwide. I completely understand that you alone can't do the whole tax relief worldwide thing, thats not your fault at all, i wouldn't be able to. But with a company so large with so many
resources can't you phone up your UK/European counterpart and say "hey we're doing this cool promotion over here, i think it'd be really great if you could organise it over at your end and we can make it a joint WW event".

We over in europe see so many of these "get Microsoft * free when you watch webcasts" and then find out it's US only and we never or rarely see something our end. it completely sucks for us and we want some love.

Is there a chance you could make some calls to your european counterparts and see if you can get somethig cool set up with them?

there must be some european MS guys thinking the same thing as you.

Jaz, I COMPLETELY AGREE! Another example of how the good efforts in one section/area of MS are undermined by a complete lack of foresight in another. Europe only ever seems to get the crumbs that MS are prepared to giveaway

IMHO MS are going to be seriously disappointed by the business take up of Vista. Win2k and XP are firmly settled in now, there's also still a substantial number of businesses running NT4, so why go through a major upgrade and major expense, just to provide
