A chat with Sara Ford - CodePlex turns 3, reaches 10,000 projects

Microsoft's open source forge CodePlex has just turned 3 years old and passed the auspicious milestone of 10,000 active projects (actually 11,025 at time of filming).

We thought this would be a good time to sit down with Sara Ford - Agile Program Manager for CodePlex - and recap on the past three years, CodePlex's current feature set and what's in store for the future.

We were first introduced to the Education Labs team six weeks ago with the release of the Microsoft Live Services Plug-in for Moodle. Today the Education Labs group has released the Math Worksheet Generator – a free application created specifically for Mathematics teachers and tutors (as well as parents and studious pupils) to help them create practice math problems along with accompanying answer sheets.

The Math Worksheet Generator is based on the Microsoft Math engine and is able to deconstruct the logic of a sample math problem you provide (using the Math Input Panel if on Windows 7) and create many more examples to help test a students understanding of a particular concept.

Kate Mulcahy from the Education Labs team joins me in the studio for a demo of the Math Worksheet Generator as well as a sneak peak at two projects currently in development. Folder Based Sites for teachers wanting to publish documents and learning materials to the web and FlashCards; a Silverlight web application that allows you to create customized sets of flash cards that display based on memory science research that the group has been working on.

Hands on with Windows Live Movie Maker

As of today, Windows Live Movie Maker is officially out of beta and available to download for FREE as part of the Windows Live Essentials suite.

Victor Santodomingo, Windows Live Movie Maker Engine Development Lead, joined me in the studio to demonstrate the new Movie Maker in action and to discuss how his team developed a brand new engine that processes in 3D space to take advantage of Direct X capabilities and GPU effects.

Can I Upgrade to Windows 7?

There are two parts to this question.

1. Can I purchase an upgrade to Windows 7?

If you have a PC running a full version of Windows XP or Windows Vista then yes you can purchase an upgrade to Windows 7.

The Windows 7 installer will ask for the product key from your Windows XP or Windows Vista machine for proof or purchase.

2. Can I perform an upgrade to Windows 7?

This is where it gets a little complicated.

If you are running Windows XP, Windows 7 Beta or Windows 7 RC then you will not be able to perform an upgrade to Windows 7.

Windows XP and Windows 7 Beta/RC users will need to backup their files and settings (ideally using the Windows 7 Easy Transfer Wizard) and perform a clean install of Windows 7.

Windows Vista users who want to upgrade to an equivalent or greater version of Windows 7 can do so providing they are not changing from 64bit to 32bit versions of the OS.

Q: Can my PC run Windows 7?

The short answer is yes (probably).

If your PC is less than 5 years old then you should be fine.

The official minimum system requirements for Windows 7 are:

- 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
- 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
- 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
- DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

If you're not sure what hardware is in your machine or you want a more detailed assessment then download and run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor (Beta)

The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor is kind of like a stand alone version of WEI and will assess your PC's hardware checking the four main system requirements (CPU, RAM, HDD & Graphics) and give you a detailed report outlining whether or not your machine is capable of running Windows 7.

The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor will also list any devices or programs you have installed that may have issues with Windows 7 and where possible provide info on how to address these.

Of course, if your PC doesn't meet the minimum system requirements... this may not necessarily be the end of the road.

The Complete Guide to Windows Easy Transfer

For the majority of geeks the most nerve racking part of installing a new OS is ensuring that you've successfully backed up all your files and settings before hand.
Trying to remember all the little nooks and crannies on your seven hard drives and 19 partitions where you squirreled away data can take hours if not days, let alone making a list of all the software you have installed so that you have a reference point of what to install once your new OS is up and running.
Enter Windows Easy Transfer.
I managed to track down three of the gentlemen behind this amazing tool: Terry Dolan, Rahul Prasad and Dhaval Joshi.
In this video we cover virtually everything you would ever want to know about Windows Easy Transfer and demonstrate the application in action on a Windows XP machine (creating a *.MIG file and backing up to USB key) and transferring files and settings from Windows Vista to Windows 7 via an Easy Transfer cable.

One of the many enhancements in Windows 7 is the support for Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) certified devices.

Windows 7 will automatically find devices on your home network that are DLNA compliant (with the digital media renderer role) allowing you to right click a photo, video, piece of music etc. and PLAY-TO (send it) to a DLNA device like the Roku Sound Bridge radio, digital picture frame, or Extender for Windows Media Center (such as the Xbox 360) where it will immediately begin playing. Not only that but you'll have full control back on your Windows 7 machine.

I sat down with Gabe Frost back in January 2009 to talk about DLNA, Windows 7 and Play-to.

Education Labs release Windows Live Moodle Plug-in

At OSCON today the Microsoft Eduation Labs group released a Windows Live services plug-in for the open source Moodle e-learning platform.

Kosar Jaff joined me in the studio for a demonstration of Moodle and a look at how his group incorporated Windows Live services into the Moodle environment.

As with Moodle, the Education Labs plug-in is entirely PHP based and open source.

Microsoft Contributes Code to the Linux Kernel

Today Microsoft released 20,000 lines of device driver code to the Linux Community. The code, which includes three Linux device drivers, has been submitted to the Linux kernel community for inclusion in the Linux tree.

Sam Ramji, Senior Director of Platform Strategy, and Tom Hanrahan, Director of the Open Source Technology Center, discuss the release of this code under General Public License v2 and how both customer and community demand is driving better integration between Windows and Linux.

In the coming months we hope to feature more videos from the Open Source Technology Center engineers and developers. For now, as Sam mentions in the video, please let us know your thoughts on this announcement and also any suggestions you may have for future videos you would like to see from the Open Source Technology Center.
