If one looks around on the internet there are several articles mentioning an interview with Bill Gates in which he supposedly mentions Windows 7 out this year. (Note: Was he saying within a year from his mentioning it, or was he saying this year in '08?).

How can this be? Are there any plans for a Beta or CTP? I mean, it is not the "new year" anymore. We're nearing the half way point. I don't it just doesn't seem like there is nearly as much "Hey look what's coming and try it out" with Windows 7. And that scares me. They had a lot of prerelease stuff out for Vista and a lot of people still heap the dung pretty high on it. How's "Seven" going to do?

So anyway, I'm not trying to start another flame war. Some of our customers are talking now about waiting until Windows 7 and skipping Vista and we're getting asked whether or not there is any preview available since it will be "released this year, right? RIGHT?"

The quick recap. About two years ago I got an 80 (or is it 60) GB Video iPod. It has worked for about half that time. I've sent it in twice. I am fairly soured on it. I want to replace it.

Does anyone want to offer an updated opinion of Zune versus iPod?

Some thoughts:

I don't suspect I'll really watch much video, I thought I would, but so far I have not.

I don't have much music, 80 or 60 gb is WAY overkill.

Point #1: Microsoft has certainly never received any money from me for using Internet Explorer.

Point #2: Just make the browser do everything so I can please stop listening to people whine about what IE doesn't do and firefox/opera/whatever does. Just do it already.

So here's the deal. They don't seem to get much for money from IE so I'm not sure why this would make any business sense, but I wish MS would grab some extra resources and just make IE king of the bloody mountain already.

Is this really so hard? Does it come down to the fact that there isn't any money in it? So often they seem to do just enough to get by. I know some people think it is cool to be anti-microsoft and what not, but listening to it just gets old and some times I just want Microsoft to buckle down and punch somebody in the mouth.

A first target for a right hook? I'll leave that up to a general vote.

Well, this might sound silly, but since they were released at the same time I am curious how much the Vista SP1 team talked to the Windows Server 2008 team to tell them "Hey, we're fixing this and this and this".

In other words, I am making a poor assumption that Windows Server 2008 has same/similar technologies as Vista and now that SP1 for vista is out I am curious how many of those fixes are incorporated into Windows Server 2008 RTM out of the box?

VS2008 Web Setup Project Build Fails [VS2008 Web Setup Project Build Fails]

I'm looking for any help I can get here. I made a very simple web project. It has four pages. I then added a web setup project to my solution and added the primary output and content.

When I right click on the setup project and say build the main project builds but the setup project fails. As far as I can tell, it just says 1 built and 1 failed. I cannot even find a reason WHY it failed.

HINTS?! Anybody know where I can even look to get more info about what failed?

The prelims: We are a .NET shop. We generally, though not always work in ASP.NET 2.0. We do consulting.

Ok, now, I very OFTEN get asked "Will the site you build us support 200 users at once?" So, since we're fairly new and we haven't put in place every part of our company we really haven't done any metrics type testing.

I am looking for suggestions on web load testing, web unit testing. Product votes + or -, notes, comparisons, likes, dislikes, etc. Some of the ones I've stumbled upon include:

Visual Studio for Testers
Empirix
NeoLoad

Anyone know of other ones?

I am seeking to enlighten myself on the concept of highly available or high performance database architecture.

There, now that I got the buzzwords out of the way we can get down to business. I am dying to understand how large companies with large e-commerce websites deal with database. I am specifically interested in SQL Server 2005. Let’s say I have a web farm of a 50 machines all load balanced with my web store application. Now, I’m incapable of describing this with the proper technical terms, but bear with me: I would like to setup 10 (the number really matters not, just more than 1) sql server instances that will serve my web farm for my site.

Basically I want everything load balanced and available at any moment. The basic concept is that if I have x number of sql servers all serving queries and recording transactions I will get better overall performance under heavy load.

Now, somebody will get on here and rip me a new one in some fashion so have at it. Have your fun. In the end I’m still simply curious if this is possible and where might I find some information on this topic. I found this article which was interesting though I’m not so sure I understood it all or that it describes what I want:

For example, in the article they go into detail about one very important problem. If my request to record shipping info is load balanced to SQL Server “A” and then on the next page I show them a page to confirm what they’ve entered and I do that by reading the record from the database how do I get around the fact that I may get load balanced to SQL Server E which hasn’t had the data replicated to it yet? I suspect this “problem” only gets worse the more sql instances you have.

So, any suggestions for reading? Any comments? Be gentle in your remarks please, but be firm. I come seeking wisdom.

I had read at one point (do not remember where :$) that there would be no RC for VS2008. Can anyone confirm/deny this? I myself have had good luck with both beta's so far. And for this very reason I'd really like to see an release candidate so that MS can really drive home more quality and make this the VS we've all waited for.

Ya, so, here's to hoping for an RC, but just curious if anymore has been decided on this topic.

PDC 07 Predictions [PDC 07 Predictions]

Going into PDC 05 I had heard of and played with WCF and WPF and Vista. And probably one of the most talked about items I hadn't seen much on was LINQ. I was totally caught off guard by Workflow though. For each person I suppose there is some different "new thing". What about PDC 05 caught you off guard or made you go WOW.

Any predictions on new stuff for PDC 07? What are you most looking forward to seeing more about? I'm mildly excited about VS2007 and Longhorn Server. I say mildly, because I'm cluelessa bout what might be in them.

I'd like to see a big push on Powershell and how GUI is built on it. I hear about GUI on Powershell, like for Exchange 07, but never see any articles on it. Maybe we'll see some Vista R2 stuff.

I have vista rtm (ultimate) and office 2007 enterprise.

Anyone else have a similar setup and having problems getting Word or Publisher to open?

It just keeps saying word encountered a problem, it searches for some info and then closes. The next time it asks about opening in safe mode, still fails. And after that it tries to open some repair thing that doesn't help either.

Anyone know a forum or place I can go to get some help on this? Not sure how to submit the issue to microsoft.

Travel Comp [Travel Comp]

The Short Version:

Should I comp my consultants when I require them to travel more than a week at a time and how should I comp them?

The Long Version:

My company has executed a few forays into the consulting field with good results. We are thinking of pursuing more engagements that will require more travel from the employees and travel times that are longer than they are currently used to.

I am trying to figure out, is there any sort of "standard" compensation for this? Do any of your companies extend anything to you past your regular salary?

Just fishing for some possibilities.

I have been looking at playing with WinFX a little, but am wondering, is there a CTP coming out soon? Or another beta? The last one I see is from Feb...we're half way through may already.

Anybody have any news on this?

It seemed like we had a CTP nearly monthly there for a while, now we haven't had one in a good while.

I would love to create screencasts of topics for the developers at my company to answer commonly asked questions.
