Site Feedback - Long standing seek problem...

For almost as long as I can remember I've always had problems with seeking on channel 9 videos. Videos always load and play fine, but often when I seek using Chrome or FireFox the video sits at buffering 0% a seemingly infinite amount of time. However, I don't see this issue in IE.

I'm not sure if thats a C9 or Silverlight problem, but do you guys know anything about that?

Just marking another month passing with now news on a beta. ... which really sucks, because I need more information on WF and possible integration with OSLO to plan a new large scale project. Hopefully some news will come this month... but currently my bets are on the VS event in june.

More importantly, do any of you know if they fixed the snapping to work right with multiple monitors? ...in the beta you were unable to snap windows to the monitor split :-/

The first bug also showed up on the "MOST RECENT ACTIVITY" section of http://channel9.msdn.com/Forums/

"Passing mms:// url to embeede… player on web page in asp.net"

However it displays correctly on the actual post ( http://channel9.msdn.com/forums/TechOff/464489-Passing-mms-url-to-embeeded-windows-media-player-on-web-page-in-aspnet/ )

... but I imagine these things all have a single root cause.

Sorry guys, I've got four three bugs for you.

1) Goto http://channel9.msdn.com/tags/10-4/. In the title of episode 15 you'll see … ...
"10-4 Episode 15: Model-First D… with the Entity Framework 4.0"

Also, titles in some search results also show up with these encoded characters.

2) Goto http://channel9.msdn.com/Search/Default.aspx?Term=test&Type=c9#Page=2
Scroll down to the "endpoint.tv Screencast - Creating Your First WCF Client". Instead of showing the jpg, it's showing the url to the jpg (http://mschnlnine.vo.llnwd.net/d1/ch9/0/7/1/1/2/4/EndpointScreenCastCreatingFirstWcfClientVS2008_large_ch9.jpg)

3) If you search for the title "endpoint.tv Screencast - Creating Your First WCF Client" you'll get no results. However, this title came up in the search used in bug 2.

4) If you do a search for something with only a few results, it shows a bunch of result borders for empty items. E.g.

I'm in a low density area myself, which is probably why they don't care about my internet usage. It's an "out post" community surrounded by farmland with a population of around 3000. We've got 10 meg cable here, so it could be worse... but I miss the 30 meg I had in paris.

Anyway, I don't think the problem is in the cost of upgrading the infrastructure. Here at least, it seems to be part of the business model. Without upgrading anything, every 6 months or so they raise the limit on normal broadband as well as the +$5/mo premium package. By doing this slower, it gets more people to pay the upgrade fee and makes it seem like they're actually making progress. (I hope that doesn't just sound like a conspiracy theory, its true )

Dang thats crazy. I haven't had any problems with charter yet, and I download a lot. This month alone I downloaded 20GB of mix video content, VS2010 CTP, Windows 7 Beta, and have watched over 40 episodes of TV on hulu. Sure that may be extreme usage, but it was all completely legal.

I was googling all day and found nothing. Thanks a lot I would never have figure this out, partly to the fact that it seems like a random fix.

I googled that exe but I dont find much info on it. Where can I find more info on why there was an error and why this worked?

Ah cool, I'm glad that worked for you. So the tools use to come with .Net 2.0, but it appears they're not shipped with .Net 3.5. I'm not sure why they're no longer shipped, but you got it to work without them so no worries. It probably looking in the relative directory and found the tbl itself, so there was no need to register it.

So why did this work? Type Libraries are binary files that define how you communicate with a COM object. Typically the type library is embedded into the object itself, but sometimes it's not. In your case I assume found the tbl on your computer so there were no issues, but on the remote machines it was missing and Visual Studio simply didn't have the information it needed to use the object.

Even though the tabs run on different processes, they use the same cookies. The only way I *think* you could get away with it is by not using the "Remember me on this computer" option.

It sounds like you might have a type library problem. To add the com component they'll have to have the corrisponding tbl and register it with regtlib.exe or regtlibv12.exe.

The above video contains the tag "p&p" which when navigated to provides a server side Bad Request ( http://channel9.msdn.com/tags/p&p .) I tried to manually url encoded the & but the results were the same ( http://channel9.msdn.com/tags/p%26p .)

There was also another error I ran into (e.g. searching for "summit 2009" without quote) but the server said it logged that one.

Just thougth I'd let you guys know

Mix has come and gone with no beta. ...

So if we're expecting Windows 7 before August, should we expect VS around the same time? Or will it get pushed off until the PDC in mid November? I doubt it. Its been around 5 months since the CTP, the 10-4 shows must be running out of content soon, and Windows 7 should ship with the .Net 4.0 runtime. I hope, and sort of expect, to hear news on a VS2010 beta soon.

Ah, fair question. So I ran a test, and nope silverlight.net's player didn't work either. Sorry guys, I guess my problem is elsewhere.

Well, I'm using FF 3.0.1 and for some reason videos won't play in full screen mode. When I clock the button, something seems to happen but the video does not into full screen mode.

Also I have a suggestion. The sites video player is small, so I often view the videos in full screen mode. But sometimes, this isn't what I really want. I'd like to see a third viewing mode that will make the video consume the entire webpage's viewing area without actually going into full screen mode.

Excellent work guys. C9 has become an awesome resource. To me the ice breaker content is perfect (opposed to demo-hell at silverlight.net), but the deeper 'going deep' style needs a little more... depth. The content is always good, but it might not be what the community would really like to know. In spirit of helping or targeting the community more, maybe its a good idea to open some form of dialog to the videos?

There are a few possibly good options I see for that. One way would be to put up a new form or method of seeing upcoming videos and with key topic points. Through this, allow user feedback/questions before the video is recorded. Another simply way may be quick follow up interviews to interesting questions submitted by users? The third way is similar to the second, but instead of a followup interview, provide some answers through 'This Week on C9'. Allowing this sort of participation in the content will greately improve C9.

I'm not sure if this is the proper place for them but I thought I'd add this in. Heres an idea for a show I'd like to see made:

General mistakes and optimizations for .Net developers -- E.g. .Net/BCL features people often ignore but could be helpful? .Net/BCL features commonly used incorrectly? .Net/BCL usage mistakes causing slowness or circumvent compiler optimizations? .Net/BCL optimization and tips not covered in best practices.
