Coffeehouse - Xp Pro System Restore

I have used it with some degree of success- To note when I do a restore point- I always do the following- Reaply any update that was installed after the date on the restore point. I also do a full scandisk- mycomputer- find drive- right click- choose properties-
Tools (tab) then Scandisk check now- checkmark both boxes- and reboot. as soon as that check is done I then do a defrag just to make sure evertything is smooth.

The one thing to remember is that should you get a virus on your system- before you attempt to remove it you have to disable the system restore- so the Antivirus software has to have access to the file store to disinfect it.

Coffeehouse - How should Media Player be improved?

FOR WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER 9 I know it works for me on builds 3xxx and up - The CTL-I (eye key) but does not work when the player is at full-screen- It brings up a capture mode.
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this feature-

I would like to see like a play as ghost feature on my desktop similar to that of the Ati Dvd so I can see what song tittle is playing next without it having to overtake what I am working on.

Coffeehouse - OT - A Forum member needs your help - Email

Well hope this helps- I know with my ISP they have for thier email some spam filters... also along the lines of hotmail...Some will filter out for examp

TEST MESSAGE (subject line)

the all caps used for some filters.

YOU are #1 and and Tops in the Field!!!!!!
The use of the punctuation.(!!!!!)

(LOL) or Blank Subject lines.
They filter those out for the use of ( ( ) ) and the blankness.

Also sometimes mail for example depending on the server can take up to 24 hours to be posted- because of updates and network traffic.

So it is possible the mail you are not getting could fall into those categories.

Also if your email has a bulk mail folder sometimes the limits on that do not allow for incomming traffic.

Coffeehouse - Visual Studio Core Team Biographies

Well overal I like the idea- and the adding of the peoples RSS feed if they have a blog is great.

Got a curious question have not counted them- but overal what is the Female to Male Team Members ratio.
I am still trying to disprove the "Homer Simpson is a programer theory"http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=300

Also have another question- you may have to converse with your team. Overal how many hours do you people spend in your office (at work working)? Or Do you rotate as a shift?

Also posting your teams bios also shows the great statement that JewelyaZ stated"There ARE lots of smart women who work at Microsoft, I promise you. "

Followed by the comment Charles made...."This is absolutely true! We need to do a better job of making this obvious. Stay tuned for upcoming videos of the female brains behind the scenes. With what we've posted so far, you'd think only men work at Microsoft...
Time to change this pattern."

So by your team posting thier bios up this helps.

Coffeehouse - Outlook for the whole family.

Does not Outlook have a backup utility you can download. Then all you have to do is after you close outlook make a backup and place it in the shared folder- then all she has to do is restore from the backup on her account- that way it will kind of maintain
2 of the same account. Unsure if it would work for what you are doing- But it is a way I worked around having multiple boot partitions and multiple outlooks so to speak for keeping all of them on the same sheet of music.

For me since I test I save my backup to a totally different partition seperate from the operating system so that in the event I have to reinstall or crash I don't loose all my data.
I think it may be a bios issue- you should possibly check for a bios update- I don't recomend flashing them unless you know what you are doing but- possibly have a look at your motherboard manufacturer site and see if there is possibly a bios update

Coffeehouse - Give me your best Windows diagnostics tips!

For me I start with the basics.

Event Log-Virus Scan- Spyware Scan- Quick trip to Windows Update- Check for updated drivers (VIDEO/MOBO)-Bios Settings- Scandisk full- then also if it is freezing then I usually check out these helpful pages.

http://support.microsoft.com/

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp.htm

http://www.dougknox.com/

http://aumha.org/win5/index.htm

Then if it was running good at one time- Check for System Restore points-

And for those Really Nasty Hangups...before reformat and reinstall

Put your Xp CD into the tray...cancell out of the installer-

goto the run command type - SFC /Scannow (replace when prompted)

also check the MSconfig for anything starting up that should not be.

Not to meniton also if it is a hangup - try a different theme- Like classic to see if it is a system hangup or not.

Windows Install issues-
Cut back to just the basics-
Video card and cdrom- also try downloading the install floppy disks-
(no sound-nic-or modem-) PNP can take care of those later
Memory- if you got alot of memory- sometimes that can cause install issues-
if you have 2 sticks of 256mb then only use one
or if you have 2 sticks of 512mb then only use one.

Coffeehouse - What is a the latest build LH?

I think it is something that everyone is curious about. Speculations run wild as faked and real screenshots roam through sites. It would be nice since version numbers change I am assured on a daily basis to know what number the build is. It does not give
away any secrets as to progress and or state of development. But it does for people outside Microsoft the curiosity factor of what is the build number of the day.

Speaking on the issue of build numbers- that raises question.

How for example is each build determined?
we saw for example with Direct X versioning-
DX 8.1,9.0,9.0a,9.0b and then we also saw minor changes in the ending numbers.

You also neglected to mention how Microsoft gives back to the comunity. Be it Bill Gates giving to charity. Or how Microsoft gives computers and operating systems to schools or non-profit organzations. We kind of seem to for some reason glance over these
things when we read the news. That is just my opinion.

That is what he used to translate the page so that we could understand what you wrote.

When you paste the letters in that is what it comes up with as the translation.

This is what Altavista translates your text to mean

Channel9 is not □politics □the station, □is not sealed □. My □also very much □anger government □□seals □. But my □understanding government's line □, because □the government wants the surface □too to be many counter- □□□. But center □the people □universal

Or it also translates to mean this when you use traditional to english

Channel9 is not the political website, cannot force out. Our also very angry government's network blockade. But we understand the government the line □, because □the government must face too many anti-Chinese public opinions. But China's situation and
so on people □universal existence foreign judgement insufficiency, is very easily misled. I did not know which country also has equally to face this □multi- pressures like China, develops under this □multi- pressures. We □were assorted □cannot give up Taiwan

back Taiwan, the people □can be discontented, the country can face the people □does not trust the pressure. To Microsoft, we do not have any repugnance, our programmer majority is the work under the Windows platform. Very regrettable we pirate very seriously,
is □the programmer, I do not like the existence which pirates, believed the government meets the truncation to stop. We OS? Wrong, our China majority of programmers, all do not favor this system, but no matter favors, we all must attempt do time. We need academic
society more things after all.

Coffeehouse - How big should the Internet Explorer Temp Files Folder be?

Currently I am one of those infamous Dial-Up users at home. I have mine set to be 2.5 gigs but tend to clean it out every week. Have tried the default and most web pages using that take alot of time to load. Seems like 1gig at minimal should be set to
for dial up users. It seems to have maximum effect for pages that I visit all the time.

Any thoughts from the people who design and test Internet Explorer?

I also find it to be more productive when it is set not to save itself on the operating system drive.

Coffeehouse - Microsoft: Not enough XPerienced PCs

Well can you blame thier thoughts because one of the default people on the welcome screen is that of a Skateboarder.

At work I have it set to the Classic look with Classic menus- also the Windows 2000 style login.
So by changing XP to resemble that I get the best of 2 worlds. The "Proffessional" look of Windows 2000 and the functions of Windows XP.

Though Most recent to give you an idea.
We recently did a major upgrade to the Windows 2003 Server and WIndows Xp workstations

Our network had been mostly comprised of this.
Windows 2000 Server. Windows NT4 workstations.
Also A few Win98 workstations depending on what tasks the people were doing.

Patches- we test all the patches on a few machines before patching all of them. (normally if it is a very bad threat) we can limit which machines actually see the outside world.
