Coffeehouse - Using just any unsecured WiFi - stealing?

It's pretty black and white. If you are using someone else's wireless connection (whether secure or insecure) without their knowledge and permission, than you are in the wrong both morally and, in most places, legally as well. Even with the owner's permission you are still not in the clear. Many large service providers, like Comcast, explicitly prohibit any sharing of the network connection in their terms of service. Most service providers also do have bandwidth caps or variable cost plans. Throw in liability concerns, risk of infections or data theft, etc., and it's just a bad idea.

Coffeehouse - How sad

My old Linksys gear was pretty reliable ... until a series of power company surges fried it all. Linksys became a mess when Cisco took over, so Belkin could hardly do worse. Prices should go up by a factor of ten overnight if they follow the standard Belkin pricing, so nobody will buy the stuff anyway. I'm mostly using dlink stuff at the moment, which has been reasonable. The DIR655 is a pretty good wireless router. Options for consumer-grade network equipment have been pretty weak lately.

Coffeehouse - Surface Pro seems to be named Surface Windows 8 Pro now

I think the naming is an attempt to distinguish the Surface Pro from Surface RT in order to address some of the customer confusion about capabilities ('this device runs Windows 8 Pro"). But I would expect that for those customers, knowing Pro vs. RT doesn't really help any in answering their questions. The naming also creates a very awkward problem for dealing with later versions of the OS. Just taking the number out of the name -- i.e. Surface Windows Pro instead of Surface Windows 8 Pro would be better. But at that point, you should just drop the Windows too and go right back to the SurfaceRT and Surface Pro we had before. MS has been using "Windows 8" as a brand, most likely to emphasize the departure from previous versions. But highlighting the change from older versions makes it more awkward for future versions.

Microsoft has always had the worst product naming of any company in the history of time. Most of the products would be much better off to stick with the internal development names.

Coffeehouse - MVVM and local time versus UTC

I'm no expert on MVVM, but to my thinking it should be done in the viewmodel. The view should only be handling presentation, so that I can swap out the view without changing the behavior of the content. The view should provide a means of setting a viewmodel property for what zone (format) I want the time in, and the viewmodel should then return the time property in that form. However, that does not mean that any other code should use the presentation property. Internal code should be operating on the UTC form, for the obvious reasons, letting the viewmodel maintain the translated version for the view. That particular case doesn't seem like it should be very difficult to implement (certainly some things are difficult to implement cleanly for a variety of reasons).

Of course, that is speaking generally. Specifics of whatever technology you are using may influence your decision.

Coffeehouse - Keyboard recommendations?

I have one of those natural keyboards, and the gap in the middle didn't screw me up for more than a few minutes when I first got it. That was a surprise -- I expected it to be more of a problem. They are nice to type on -- as long as you are typing with both hands. If you are working on something that requires mouse use, and are therefore entering keystrokes with only one hand, that is a big pain in the butt with the split keyboard. For that reason, I have been moving back to straight keyboards again.

Coffeehouse - Development platform going forward?

.NET, ASP.NET, SQL, and even Access ... none of those are going to go away any time soon, and definitely not without a long amount of warning and transition time. .NET is a very safe place to be right now. Don't make any major changes unless you have a driving reason to do so. Migrating slowly away from Access might not be a bad idea anyway.

Coffeehouse - So I finally got round to trying Win8 on hardware

Whether or not an interface is intuitive (familiar) is not the key point. People will quickly adjust to and accept an non-familiar interface as long as it provides real improvements in usability. If the interface doesn't improve, or worse yet harms usability, the interface change will be rejected, and the user will be even more unhappy at putting effort into learning something different that doesn't work as well.

The concept of "superior" is a much more difficult, and subjective, concept. It is also more important for the success of a UI than familiarity.

The issue raised by Dr. Herbie is discoverability. People have to be able to figure out how to use your interface, and the majority of people are not going to go through tutorials and tips to figure them out, or memorize a bunch of shortcut keys. If a user needs to phone a friend or Google to find out how to use your interface, you have a problem and an unhappy user.

(This is a general comment and makes no implications good or bad about Win 8 in particular.)

There have been a number of videos at Build and since then showing off previews of the updates in Blend 5. I haven't heard when the new Expression will be available (probably soon), but the division of labor with VS is the same: Blend for design work, VS for code. They did move a bunch of the tools into the VS editor, but the Blend designer is not going to be in VS.

Coffeehouse - Why does Microsoft hate Visio?

I agree. Visio is great -- I could hardly get along without it. But I am stuck with Visio 2000 (after having my 2003 license taken away), and can't get anything newer. Our fancy Corporate Office licenses do not cover things like Visio and Project. We used to have to buy Visio licenses separately. Now we are not even allowed to buy it.

Visio has always been too expensive and too unknown. Most people don't even know about it. (I see a lot of people saying "what's Visio" as they struggle to draw block diagrams in Excel.) It seems like MS is trying to make it go away. I know the sales volumes are low, but it has no marketing or store presence, and many can't afford it if they can find it.

Coffeehouse - A cool Unix video from the 70's

That was an interesting video. The late sixties was an amazing time to be working in the tech industry ... Bell Labs, the other national labs, NASA, the tech universities, etc. It was such a different environment (fostering technology development) compared to our "service economy" approach today.

The video also makes it apparent how dated the UNIX design is. Many of the UNIX fundamentals (everything is a file stream, pipe all your data around between snippets of code, scripting everything together) made a lot of sense and solved a lot of problems in the environment of the late sixties -- when everything was text based and command driven, and all computer users were trained technical users. Those concepts of computing don't fit well into modern computing -- GUIs, events, non-technical users, etc. UNIX (and LINUX which followed the same model almost exactly) has tried to adapt by patching things on here and there, but that has produced a system that is still really suitable only to technical users that are largely working the same way they did three or four decades ago. (I admit that I fall into that category at times.) For the average user, it still ends up being clumsy and awkward. Certainly Windows has its crusty corners too.

I guess a half century down the road it's time for someone to start with a clean sheet and build a modern OS. Lots of people are throwing ideas around out there (like MSR). We'll see if anyone is willing to really make the leap and build a product. MS will probably just evolve Windows. Linux (i.e. Linus) has little reason to start over. Apple? Who knows? There aren't many little guys willing to compete with the big players anymore. You invest a lot into a project and get sued or swallowed.
