That is what is really wrong with the USA. Priorities are mixed up. I would say these two things are opposites - one is for creating life, the other, destroying.
Sadly this and litigation is become more widespread in the UK (and the rest of Europe I presume).

Install Firefox as admin. Run it as a limited user, you'll get asked whether it should be the default browser. Click Yes. Notice how it doesn't become your default browser. Enjoy this fun every time you run it!

Try it on a day when one of the non-optional updates comes out and the stupid thing won't run because it keeps failing to install it.

Try setting things up as an admin so that limited users can just use it (proxy settings etc) and not break things they shouldn't meddle with.

Can you even set a default browser per user? I always thought setting a default browser was for every user. I install Firefox as admin, then run it once with the same account.

What happens when you start IE as a limited user (but something else is the default browser)?

I've never had a problem with updates as a limited user (Firefox still runs, it just doesn't install the updates until logging in as admin).

Um, I run IE as a non-admin user on a daily basis and have never had a problem with the updating feature, because it was designed to work properly in the first place.

I guess it installs updates when you log off then? Although I have only ever noticed the Windows update icon when logged in as admin.

I wonder why I have never had the problems you have with Firefox - did you upgrade from older versions, or do a clean install (no profile folder or anything related to Firefox)?

Sorry but you are wrong, at least in the US.
It has already held up in court that you own the media, not the music.
If it was not for the idea of *fair-use* you would not even be able to media-shift or make a backup.
Jorgie

You have no clue what I said, and it is my fault, as I was not clear.

When you purchase a CD or DVD, you own that copy of it. You have fair use rights, such that you can watch and record the contents of it on any device that you own so long as it is for your entertainment (and perhaps your families' entertainment, as well as
your friend's entertainment when they visit). You do not have distribution rights, the right to sell it or even the right to air in public, but you do have the right to do pretty much anything else with it.

In failing to seek clarification of what I meant, you made an overarching statement that does not apply. Now you probably feel foolish.

Perhaps Jorgie works for Sony BMG or the RIAA/MPAA as he seems very pro DRM.

DRM seems to harm 'fair use' users more than pirates as they always find a way round it anyway. Your purchases are also tied to that company forever. Anything bought on iTunes has to be played on a iPod or iTunes. Even with Microsoft's DRM you are tied to a
single vendor (you cannot cancel Napster and transfer the tunes over to Yahoo for example) and platform (you need a 'PlaysForSure' device or Windows PC).

If DRM has to be used, then it shouldn't be controlled by a single vendor but operated by a non-profit consortium.

This essentially reinforces something I've often speculated: that the FireFox developers seem blissfully unaware that you can even create Limited Users on XP and that there so-called secure software is just horribly, horribly broken in that scenario.

I really hope this finally encourages them to rearchitect the broken bits of Firefox, because right now it's shaping up to be a far less security conscious option, which is a shame when it's rendering engine is undoubtedly more standards compliant than IE 7
will be.

I am guessing it is the three letter acronym that is not of great benefit to consumers, but which some companies (trying to protect their old business model) insist on. Or the other one that has a code name that is the same as a chemical element (46th in the
periodic table) that would give great power to those taking part in the initiative?

Coffeehouse - www.BrowseHappy.com - Anti-IE Movement

What it does show is that the alternatives to IE are easy to use.

Personally I have never really had that many problems with IE, I just prefer Firefox. For web development I think nothing can beat it (especially when you have Firebug). The IE Developer Toolbar is catching up with the Web Developer Toolbar, but what I really
want is a Firebug for IE (with its inspection and debugging features (like console.info added to js code)) - rather than depending on Microsoft Script Debugger.

Viruses are not really that much of a problem nowadays, it is software that people voluntarily download and which behaves like trojans/spyware. It make more financial sense (for the developers of them) than preventing a computer from working at all (by deleting
files or causing a significant slowdown).

Coffeehouse - Your thoughts on the best way to run a contest

Having Professors and Postgraduate University students (in a computer science related field) entering may seem unfair to some. Unless degrees really are handed out

If you are to have them, maybe an 'advanced' level could be created - i.e. you need a degree or higher to enter that level. Those that are qualified to that level should have much higher expectations put on them.

Perhaps it would also be better if everything had to be done in the timeline - no working on previous developments (unless it is a free /open source library that can be used by anyone, rather than something the entrant has developed before and has not shared).
For example, if something like a robot is to be used, then the development of that should be done alongside the coding.

Awards other than cash may be a good idea - like a free MSDN subscription, or entry (possible including books) into an Microsoft certification exam. So if you win the SQL Server Express contest you get free entrance into the MCTS: SQL Server 2005 exam.

Some people may not like it, but I think there should be a requirement for the source code to be under an open source license (as defined by OSI). After all, VS Express is for hobbiests. The IP should not be owned by Microsoft, but available for free use by
anyone (otherwise people may see this as a means just to get IP).

If an application is of real commercial value, then that should be outside the scope of the contest (and Visual Studio Pro would be more appropriate).

Coffeehouse - Forbes: 400 Richest Americans, Four are Microsoft Innovators

What kind of charitable donations has Steve Jobs made? Maybe not in the top ten 'rich list' (only just in the top 50, a pauper compared to Bill Gates), but I have not read about anything philanthropic about him. At least, that was the case at the start

http://www.wired.com/news/columns/0,70072-0.html
Philanthropic billionaires sounds like a misnomer to me (the most charitable people are not rich - I am talking as a percentage of wealth donated, not the value of the donation).
