Local help simply can't compete with internet search. I'll go even further-- if you are building local help files for your application, you're wasting your time. And more importantly, you are wasting your users' time.

Smart developers will stop wasting time on useless local help and build community around their product on the internet.

As most people are web enabled now, it is better to find help by searching online. In my experience, I find no one uses the help feature in Office, and those that do are ones that are already quite proficient in it. New/unexperienced users ask people who know (either in person, or online).

Like he says, wiki's / forums would be very useful for helping people to find out how to do something and will be more up to date than an offline version. For those that may have to work offline, perhaps the wiki could be downloadable (as a PDF or CHM).

Even the developer documentation (e.g. the .NET SDK) is not as good as it could be. Why can it not be updated automatically? security and reliability.

Anyone disagree with that? DRM compromises security of a system (as shown by the rootkit issue with Sony BMG) and can also slow it down.

What if a pirated song was detected (perhaps sent via email), would the system shut down thus causing problems? What if you were behind a firewall, how would the DRM work (some work by a remote machine accessing the file to see if the user has permission to play it). Some actually require you to turn your firewall off before playing the song.

DRM built into hardware could also be an issue, perhaps more so than software DRM.

in reply to Some Safety and Reliability Questions About DRM

<evnet:views>3958</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/150501/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>Some Safety and Reliability Questions About DRM, by Victor Yodaiken

article wrote:

Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies are supposed to
