Windows Media Player and URGE [Windows Media Player and URGE]

I don't want anything to do with URGE. Is there a way to get rid of it? Control panel->add/remove programs doesn't list it. Its there by default when WMP11 is installed. I don't buy music online and I prefer to buy my cds in person. So this URGE thing is an eyesore. Its really annoying and I'd prefer not to see it at all.

Any ideas on how to get rid of it? (without moving towards winamp or some alternative media player)

Ok, so, I've been hearing about this "Second Life". What the heck is it? I go to the website and see. Wow, interesting. A virtual world! I get excited. I find that channel 9 has a lil island as well. Ok, even a bit more excited.

I go to install the app. It installs. I try and run it. I find out my card is "not" supported. Yeah, I know I should have read the "requirements". I figured, if I can play Dungeon Siege and Dungeon Siege II, this would work just fine right? nope. Grr. *Depression sets in*

This is just one more thing to add to the ever growing list of things I cannot run or use because of my graphics card. Pfft. I think its time to go "upgrade" my card. Not an easy thing to do with a very limited budget. Maybe I'll get lucky and santa will get me one for Christmas this year.

So.. it being Christmas and all, would anyone like to make my day? :) (Hey, never hurts to ask right?) hehe.

I've just filed my "FIRST" bug ever over @ connect.ms. Hopefully its a real bug. Nothing big, maybe someone here can verify it?

Open up any file/new or old.. (I used VB.Net Express)
type this in

const BLAH as integer = 5
#const blah = 4

#if blah then
any code here

#end if

Now move the mouse over the blah in #if blah.. This "Should" show 4 right? For me it shows 5.

If const BLAH as integer = 5 is commented out, #if blah doesn't show anything when the mouse is over it. hmm. I didn't put that in the bug report. Need to edit that. [Done]

Can anyone here confirm this? here or in the actual bug report?

Windows Vista "Windows Update" broken? [Windows Vista "Windows Update" broken?]

Today, I wake up, first thing I do is go to the computer, check my email. Next thing I notice, Windows Update is saying there is a new update available to install.

Ok, so, I check it out, its a Windows Defender update KB915597. (1.14.1923.4). Ok, fine, I install it. Few minutes later.. Another windows update. Again, its the same one I just installed. I figure what the heck. So, again, I let it update. I go and do my thing in the bathroom.. I come back, and I see yet again another Windows Update for the same thing. Now I'm starting to wonder.. what the heck is going on. Why the repeated updates? Doesn't Windows Update know whats already on my machine?

I try and figure out what I had done in the past that might lead to this problem and then I remember something. Last night, I disabled the firewall and windows defender and a whole slew of things not really needed. Ok well Windows defender is one of the ones I should keep up.. But this brings the question to mind. If a service is "Disabled" in Windows Vista, does this mean, any updates that are available to install for these disabled services will keep coming up in Windows Updates repeatedly? I've already so far allowed it to install 3 times. Same version number (1.14.1923.4). Each time it installs successfully too.

I'm going to try something. Enabling Windows Defender and then allowing the update to happen.

[PAUSE while enabling Windows Defender and updating it.]

Ok, now its enabled and updated.. Checking for more updates..

[PAUSE]

Ah hah. No new updates. Weird. So, maybe can anyone here enlighten me to as why this happens or if its already been posted out there some where on the internet provide a link? :)

I just found out my little niece, she's three years old and she knows how to click on stuff to get to web sites and play different games. She knows to turn on the speakers before playing, and after playing, she closes off the browser/games, turns off the speakers and goes to do other things. Wow. 3 years old! Anyone else here have things like this happening with their little ones? :)

EDIT: whoops, almost forgot, she's turning 4 in January!

Slow downloads from MS? [Slow downloads from MS?]

I've been trying to get the last video posted in the video forum about IPV6 but for some reason, its going dawg slow. 0-20KB/sec. I can go to other sites (www.kernel.org) and download a kernel at 300KB/sec or faster.

I'm not really "internet" techie enuf to figure out where the problem is.. but I'm assuming its between my computer and the routing towards downloads.microsoft.com. Restarting the downloads sometimes gets a different IP, so each IP pretty much is the same speed. Anyone else get these kind of results or am I going wacko? :) hehe

I've got myself into this Windows Live Mail for a while now, and I just find it funny that while inside Windows Live Mail, I get ads geared towards Hotmail users to go switch to Windows Live Mail. Anyway of getting the Windows Live Mail team to make it so these type of "Geared to Hotmail Users Ads" be shut off or be replaced by something I actually fancy? :)

Just out of curiousity, what do you do with your old computer hardware stuffs? Do you keep it thinking it'll become useful later letting it collect dust, or hand it down to some other people in your family? Do you chuck it, donate it, recycle it, EBay it?

If it was my choice, I'd EBay it to the highest bidder. But selling stuff, they require credit cards. Something I don't have, nor want.

I usually keep what I get. Sometimes use it for spare parts etc. If someone comes along and I hear they need something that I have, I'll just give it to them. Other than that, it just collects dust in a closet or something. Thats kinda bad. I've had things for years and years. Thinking about moving has gotten me to think about what to do with all this stuff! Am I a packrat? YES! I just hate getting rid of things. LOL.

I had at one point 30 something mac/apple machines (mono graphical screen thing, small) picked those up in London, Ontario while on another job. 10-15 old desktop computers (486sx/dx computers). Gave them away a while ago.

Ok, Its 4:05am at the time of this writing. I've tried for the past hour or so to get some sleep. It ain't going to happen. Nor am I going to count sheep, take drugs, just lay there or read a book. What do I do? Start coding, and stay wide awake until 1-2pm the next day when I finally crash? Most likely.

What are your secrets to getting a good nights' sleep? What do you do when you can't sleep?

Noticed something odd about the number of video posts/threads. I've got screenshots of what I'm talking about below..

In one the count there is 975, the other its 999.

Btw, Nice feature with the IMG tags. I like. Its actually my first time trying to post an image. Works nicely.

Just would like to find out if I'm going crazy or not. There was a post/reply by one of the channel9 guys here where they said something about sorting threads via a URL? Any idea what I'm talking about?

Like for example, channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=XXXX&PageIndex=4 would get me to page 4 of some long post that had lots of replies.. so, is there a SortOrder/Order/Sort=XX ?

Christmas decorations? [Christmas decorations?]

Its past Halloween now, and most stores if not already are starting to put out Christmas stuff on their shelves. I've heard of people putting out their decorations already inside their homes. Have anyone here started putting out their Christmas decorations yet?

I've got a small 1bd place and no one comes to visit so I don't really bother decorating. Its usually me going to visit others. Every year though, I say to myself, I should put up at least one of those lil table Christmas trees (3-4ft things) So maybe this year I might.

Any plans on how you are going to decorate?

I have Windows Vista RC2, VS.NET 2005 (Express). I'd like to sink my teeth into Cider and WPF/WCF. I know Vista includes the Framework 3.0, but would I still need to install the September CTP of this or does Vista RC2 already have it?

I've been trying to get an Image from an htmlelement (<IMG> tag). is there a way to convert over the IMG tag to an Image object in vs.net 2005 (vb)

Sure I can grab the url from the src attrib adn download that via webclient object, wb.downloaddata -> memorystream -> new image(ms) etc.. but since the webbrowser downloads everything anyways, wouldn't it be overkill to do that? There's got to be an easy way of doing this?

I'm trying to get these videos working in linux using mplayer or even xine. The video works, but there is no sound, and video play back is poor, choppy or seems like its "lagging" somewhat. Skipping frames trying to catch up. (not a very good video guy (me)) heh..

So anyone out in linux land know of any ideas/tips ways of getting these videos to work right in linux?

I'm nearing the end of a little project i'm working on to help out with the office and two computers they are using.

This little app allows them to keep their contacts and appointments syncronized or it should. I've got working for contacts both ways, queueing up if there is a send problem like the other computer's network connection is temporarily down for some reason or another, or the other computer is powered off.

This is a standalone program run on each computer and not an Add-in to Outlook.

When the app starts, everything is set to working values, Outlook.Application, Contact/Appointment Folders. They are public to the whole app. running the debugger, I've stopped after a few lines when the Appointments object is set and I've done a ?Appointments.items.count. It returns what its supposed to.   So.. I let the program continue..

I've created a Send class that takes care of sending any changes or additions to Contacts/Appointments (Calendar) folder.

Now the problem is, from the other computer, when this change/add happens, it sends to say my computer. My computer converts it over to a usable AppointmentItem. After this, it is supposed to check to see if my computer already has a similar item, and if it does, it just copies over the existing item, or if it doesn't creates a new item.

But inside this Send class, when it tries to access Appointments (Mapifolder object), its like it does absolutely nothing after that. Its like a dead end. But no errors pop up, Try/Catch doesn't catch it.   this happens when it executes some like like

   if Appointments.items.count>0
   ...
   endif

I've run it through the debugger, and it sits there on that line for ever. So I set a breakpoint one line before it, and ?appointments.item.count. It sits there for a bit, and then says something about some Com error, and no values from this Appointments folder can be retrieved. This object is never used until this point, and is being correctly at the start of the program.

Even if I get the program to this point within a minute of starting the program, its like this. Thinking maybe it might be a time out or something like that. ( don't know much about COM.)

Even when I pass the Appointments Folder as an argument/parameter to the SendItem function inside the send class, this still happens.

Does crossing a line from the main flow of the program into a custom class break this COM connection?   I totally in left field and have absolutely no idea why this is happening. The Contacts folder seems to be working great though.. This is whats really puzzling me.

Got any ideas?
