Hi guys... I just switched from Windows 7 RC to RTM (MSDN AA for the win). RTM win 7 was unable to unpack the Windows Easy Transfer file I created on Windows 7 RC. I dont know why, but there could be a possibility that this is by design, so I wanted to warn you guys to take file-based backup.

(I did have a file-based backup, so none of my data is compromised, thankfully)

I recently built myself a desktop with an intel Core i7 920 processor. The Core i7 is a Quad core processor with HT technology, so the operating system believes it is running on 8 cores. I am running Windows 7 beta build 7000 on it. The following observations are based on the graphs on the performance tab in Windows Task Manager.

I observe that the first four graphs in the Task Manager seem to be doing most of the work on Windows. The last four processors are idle most of the time. The only time I have seen the fifth processor being used even a little bit is when I ran a bunch of programs at the same time (which proves that they are used sometime at least).

My questions are:

1. Is Windows optimized for a maximum of 4 cores?
2. In the case of a quad core processor with HT, how are the graphs in the Task Manager arranged? Do the first four graphs correspond to the physical cores, and the last four graphs to their HT "shadows"? Or is it P1, P1shadow, P2, P2shadow, etc? Because, if it is the second case, then I will get better perf out of Windows by turning off HT.

Hey I just got a laptop from the university, I got the IE8 Partner Build on it, so Google Docs was broken, so I thought I would install Chrome on it. Guess what? when I clicked install, a ClickOnce installer popped up :) Weird huh? Haven't seen those on the wild except for some MSDN sample code :P

Hey all - sad story - my laptop got stolen (the backdoor left was left unlocked by mistake :( ). It's even more sad 'coz I only just got it...
Anyhow, I need a new laptop, I have my eyes on the exact same laptop as as the one that got stolen (hp dv7t or equivalent)... Do you think I should wait till this holiday season is over to get better deals?

I noticed a few things about the microsoft homepage which in my opinion reduces the polish of the site.

Further, in the first Silverlight ad, the name is spelled Deepak_Chopra, with an underscore :P

Hi all.. need some help with Vista SP1 Home premium.
I got myself a new hp dv9700t.. I am facing this problem since week 2:

I have tried the following things: Rollback Audio Driver. Uninstall hp driver and install Realtek driver. It still is in this way. Anybody have any clue?

hey - is it just me, or is IE8 beta 2 caching a stale version of the coffeehouse landing page? I am having to lick the ajax refresh button everytime to see new threads / update the read/unread status. This happens both when I type out the address in the address bar, as well as when I click Back to return to the coffeehouse main page.

Can i have a channel 9 id associated with more than one email account?

When I signed up on C9, i had one email id, now I have another... what will happen if I sign into live, and then associate that with my 'old' c9 account - do they get linked up properly? Does my old email get kicked out of the system?

I was thinking... how about making a yahoo pipes feed that weeds out trolls from C9? Here is a start... but I need better criteria - any suggestions?

Pipes can do keyword analysis - can you think of specific keywords that we can block? Or specific patterns in the title that we can block?

Secondly - will an rss interface to C9 ever be enjoyable enough? Do you think we could wrap it up in php/ASP.NET to make a quick-n-dirty C9v4 CTP while we wait for the real one?

I just started learning ASP.NET 2.0. I am surprised by how much resistance it is showing me to do the simplest of things. Before that, I must say that I am completely blown over by LoginControl, Sitemaps, GridView and a bunch of other features.

But seriously, WHAT IS THE EQUIVALENT OF the php function echo() ?? All I wanted to do for a starting excercise was to print multiplication tables for a given integer - and I simply cannot find how to print characters to the browser.

I think I must be a terrible Google-searcher, but please, help.

I was attempting to do a manual install of flash player for firefox 2.0.0.3 on Vista. For some reason, I think it did not go too well. When I was about to click the final 'finish' button on the installer - the following window popped up:

So now, what do I do to UNDO the compatibility settings? On right-clicking and seeing the property page for compatibility, no checkboxes are checked (that is - it seems as though no settings are applied).

How do I understand whether it is running as a compatibility app? How do I convince Vista not to run it in compat mode?

Please help.

I followed a link somewhere and got redirected to a Windows Live-like login page.. the domain was not xyz.live.com or xyz.microsoft.com, it was ad.click<something I dont remember> etc.

Without thinking about it, I entered my password and hit ENTER, then suddenly realizing what had happened, I stopped loading the page, went to mail.live.com and changed my password.

:(

My question is, am I safe, or do I need to take additional steps?

Hey I was looking through my DeviantArt collection and I observed this strange thing. Two JPG files I have ('Avarice' and 'Envy' by Blackeri) shows up with a width horribly smaller than its actual width in Windows Photo Gallery and in the thumbnail view.

Internet Explorer, Irfan View and the .NET 2.0 method Bitmap.FromFile(..) show it properly... it shows up nearly as a line (barely 10-12 pixels thick) in the thumbnail view and in Windows Photo Gallery..

I am uploading 'Envy' to here (ImageShack link). Can you 'save target as' and see it whether it shows up distorted on your Vista machines too?

Well, they might be great for screen reading, but when I printed my internship report using the default font (Calibri, 11pt), my interviewer misunderstood PHP5 [that's PHP-five] as PHPS [that's PHP-ess].. and then I had to correct him (interviewers hate being corrected for what they don't know)...

The Office guys should have a clearer option like 'Optimise for Print', 'Optimise for Screen' and 'Optimise for Web'.

Firstly the text to speech quality has improved a lot. Microsoft Anna sounds much more human-like and natural than Microsoft Sam.

I noticed a very nice thing about text to speech in Windows Vista (still on RC2 here), can anyone confirm/deny this?

I had a pdf document about an internship report. It was two pages long. I put it to 'Read out loud' all the pages. The first page was read out in an acceptable tone. When Microsoft Anna reached the second page, suddenly, her volume, tone and way of speaking changed! It seemed that she had taken a cue from the first page and was articulating better. The rythm in her sentences was much, much better than in page 1.

So is this new text to speech engine in Windows Vista adaptive? Or was that a figment of my imagination?

If you notice, Vista (previously Longhorn) has been supporting 256x256 icons since an eternity, but the icons that come with Visual Studio (even 2005) are 32x32 at their maximum resolution. So I thought it was time for a new set of icons, and here they are! You can download these icons in two different formats, one is for XP, which does not have the 256x256 image, and the other is for Vista, which has a 256x256 image embedded in the icon. Enjoy!

Couple of disclaimers, though:

these have only 32bit icons. So if you are using 24/16/8 bit color, sorry, I dont support you yet.
I made icons for the file types I handle the most, so Visual Basic developers may have to wait for sometime before I make one for .vb files.
To change the icon for file types on Vista, you will have to manually edit the registry or use a utility like Iphile.

What changes do you expect between vista RC1 and RTM? I am not speaking about changes that you want, I am talking about changes that you think will take place...

Here is my list...

The boot screen.
The sound scheme.
The "Evaluation Copy" label from the bottom right of the Desktop.

I will add to this list when more occur to me... Now it's your turn.

(On a slightly different note, whatever happened to the Pinball game? It was my favourite on XP :( )

Hey guys, I have been messing around with my experimental partitions, and now I get this when I try to do a FIXMBR from the Windows XP SP2 CD recovery console:

** CAUTION **

This computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid master boot record.

FIXMBR may damage your partition table if you proceed.

This could cause all the partitions on the current hard disk to become inaccessible.

If you are not having problems accessing your drive, do not continue.

Are you sure you want to write a new MBR?

I can still boot into my Windows XP OS, I just wanted to be sure my MBR things are in order. Plus Windows Vista does not like this MBR. So could anyone suggest whether I should allow FIXMBR to do its job?
