ok so I know nobody can really answer this, just wondering. With yet another OS looming a couple years away is the focus from MS going to be on that and hope the hang in until it comes out and then dump Vista ... like Windows ME ...? I don't like these "big" OS releases and would prefer just incremental updates .. anyway

the company I work for has cancelled our Vista/Office07 rollout to some 200 developers since the initial batch had so many problems. Vista on its own was so so but add office 2007 and we just had the machines being returned all the time ... we gave it until SP1 but at some point you have to give in.

any thoughts on if there'd be an upgrade path to Windows 7?

Sonic DLA was on during my upgrade - the driver is blocked which is fine but I can't uninstall it since the installer gets blocked too ...

ok about 5 minutes ago I totally lost the fraking plot - if there is a god please help me find one piece of working hardware magically combined with software before I find myself swinging from a bridge ...

My failing keyboard combined with a wireless adapter that won't stay up results in Mallet->Keyboard=pieces of happiness.

I think besides Vista a mac or at least osx is the only other real option - anyone get much experience with virtual machines on that? still gotta keep my day job with .net ;) I just want something fast that works - not posting to bash what I'm running now, I'm out of bash right now.

So we all know that networking in Vista is screwed up and I am amazed that 1 year after release it still doesn't work. What happens to me? well after about 8 hours of use most applications loose their internet connection (wireless and lan) - Most? you ask ... yes - things like outlook still get/send mail, IE/FF stop working, chat stops etc. maybe office just "wishes" the data over the air [H]

So I need to reboot to get back my connection - great, here is the problem. After getting the "logging off" and then "shutting down" for an un-determined amount of time my machine just blue screens ... awesome.

That means for one I can never "shutdown" as the blue screen causes a restart. Now lets compound this - if I resume from Sleep or Hibernate I get an ACS (acs.exe??) crash and guess what - no internet. So I need to do the above BSOD sequence - (left eye twitching).

This is Vista certified hardware from Lenovo - "certified" I guess means Vista will run ... what it does while running isn't "certified" but at least I know my drivers are pretty good.

So once or twice a day I must force a BSOD to keep surfing, I can't resume,sleep,shutdown or restart with a BSOD so installing updates is fun.

Boot->Trash Network->Reboot->BSOD->Recover->Shutdown->BSOD->Recover->Work
->Trash Network->Reboot->BSOD and so on .... how much asprine can you take in a day? [A]

When I ran Vista for 3 months I had other issues and can't remember how stable the actual OS was.

Here is the problem, I'm on XP 32Bit - at least once a week if not more an application goes nuts and the machine basically grinds to a halt. I try restart/shutdown/whatever and it just hangs at the shutting down or logging off screen and you have to kill the power. I'm sure we're all been there.

Besides Vista's obvious issues - in this single issue, does it seem to cope?

So I've been waiting for a critical .sql file to get emailed to me - using outlook 2003. It arrives, I drag the attachment to my sql editor and get the fantastic taskbar error msg saying I can't drop items on the taskbar ... so I go back to outlook to try again and the freaking attachment is gone!

yup ... gone - you can't edit incoming messages in your inbox but what da know ... my file is gone, I re-opened outlook, nothing - it deleted the attachment from my existing message.

freaking un-bloody-belieable - I am so tired of this crap

ok - this is odd, I'm on firefox 2.0.0.6 latest version.

I was on walmart and selected a previous site (adcenter.msn.com) - I ended up at the live.com logout screen where I was logged out automatically from all my live services then redirected to a site called:

"Gatineau" - it looks like the live login it even has the correct url but it isn't secure but it did have my login name ... ???? It's definately an MS site but un-secure?? and why did it hi-jack my browser like that ...

or

maybe this is something else ... I tried my url again and got the adcenter without this prompt so something is up.

ok, so I had a directv move go bad and of course cable want me to wait a week for install so I started looking around the internet to see what I could watch;

with something like iTunes and Apple TV boxes it seems you can get almost ALL of what those companies offer but just over the net and commercial free ...

then there is joost and vista->xbox (but no video to buy??)

Has anyone tried this model of entertainment?

So I was thinking it would be funny to post a screen shot of my post on this forum showing the screen shot of the post ... which would show the screen shot etc ... - like a mirror in a mirror.

but I don't think you can get the initial image without some photoshop hacking ... or at least I've damaged something upstairs trying to work it out :P

I guess the coffee wore off or something ...

ok so I just need to vent - I've had Vista since RTM - waited like a good little boy for that final release before installing on a production machine.

Firstly, my machine is certified to support Vista so I didn't just install it on anything - all my drivers are either MS supplied or Manufacturer supplied for Vista.

There are many little things they just aren't working right yet and I don't want to start more threads on those, what kills me are complete system crashes - I'm talking blue screens, complete lockups, random reboots and the worst one, a reboot during resume from sleep.

I have almost a complete crash once a day and I can't find any patterns (except for the resume crash).

What makes it worse is being a developer I have 2-3 VMs running and of course loose those as well when things go bad.

Is it just me .... ? or is something completed screwed up here? :|

I have a laptop, if I put it into sleep and then unplug my mouse - (heaven forbid I'd want to move my laptop) - it resumes from sleep and I can't find a way to disable this ....

Need a little help with my SQL ;)

It seems simple but I can't get the data I need, here is the setup.

I have 10 tables, they are all identical except for 1 column.

Each table has 4 keys, PK1-4 and then one extra column with an integer value. So for Table 1 lets call this extra column C1.

Table 1: PK1, PK2, PK3, PK4, C1
Table 2: PK1, PK2, PK3, PK4, C2
Table 3: PK1, PK2, PK3, PK4, C3
..... to 10.

I am trying to get the data out of these 10 tables into a single table that looks like this:

NewTable: PK1, PK2, PK3, PK4, C1, C2 .... C10.

I am doing it in code but its slow.

I was wondering if I could do a fancy select against 10 tables that will return rows that have all the keys and colums, grouped by the keys. Then I can do a select into my newtable. :)

Generally speaking the set of keys will exist in each table but that might not always be true so for those values we'll accept null.

I have 7.0.5346.5 and it says something about beta2. I tried installing beta3 and it says its already installed but I don't think so.

1. I noticed something about being able to run Unix apps inside vista, anyone know what that is about?

2. Many of my legacy applications seem to have security issues under Vista - for example, some just don't run unless I run them as Admin, which is odd since it let me install them why can't I run them ... some just throw access errors even when running as Admin. - just qwerks with the beta?

3. I was also running a version under a virtual machine but it keep eating disk space ... not sure what is up with that. Runs ok on a normal machine.
