I accidently formatted the wrong partition during my win7 install, i don't think there was anything important on it, but it would be nice to recover it if i can.

Does anyone know of any free recovery software?

I have an aspx page which is checking Request.IsSecureConnection to ensure it is true, if not it does a redirect to the the secure page at https://www.domain.com/page.aspx.

The server has an SSL cert installed for the domain, and the browser shows the padlock icon.

I have created an empty aspx file, that just prints the return value of Request.IsSecureConnection and it is still false, so there is no other content coming from a standard http request.

Does anyone know why it might always return false?

Does anyone use discountasp.net (EU based servers preferably)?
Is it ok?

I'm searching for a host, ideally UK based who offer full trust without using a dedicated server, so any other suggestions are welcome.

I installed a second hdd today, partitioned it and installed windows 7 to dual boot with vista until I can be bothered to move over completely.

Whenever I've done dual boots before windows has found the existing os's and setup the boot menu for me, this time it was just booting into either Vista or 7 depending on which drive was set to boot first in the bios, no menu, or recognition of the other os.

Where did I go wrong?

I keep thinking I really should start to back stuff up properly, but I'm lazy and I never get round to it. So if I'm going to do it it needs to be automatic once setup.

I was just poking about in Vista's previous versions feature, I'd never realised it was as good as it appears to be. Can i store these shadow copies on another disk?

How good are the other backup tools in vista? Do any of them create a continuous backup of all versions of everything like Time machine?

What do you do to backup?

I was searching for something else and found the home accessory pack which I'd never seen before, which led me on a trail of Zune goodness, I ended up installing the software, browsed the site and drooled over it all.

I'm Impressed, even if I am a little late to the party.

I haven't been signing in to the live mesh client at work this week (and it doesn't remember my username/password) so it's not auto sign in.

I got home yesterday to find some files I'd edited at work were listed in my news feed, I thought I must have signed in and just completely erased it from memory. But today I made sure i didn't sign in, and sure enough, files have been updated.

So I just signed out of the client at home, threw a file into one of my synced folders, logged into the online desktop and there it is (took about a minute to appear though).

WTF?
Is this supposed to happen?

Just wondering if there is something very wrong with my system or if this is the norm with vista now, so what are your boot times and specs?

It took 3 mins 15 seconds to get to a stage where I could load notepad
It was 4 mins 53 seconds before I had things like the side bar and icons in the tray/taskbar.

I stopped timing at that point but it was another 30-60 seconds before I had a network connection and a minute or two before the disk stopped thrashing, although 5 mins later it is still very active.

I have an AMD Athlon X2 4200 (2.2ghz), 3gb ram, a 7200 rpm hdd.
My windows scores are:
CPU 5
Ram 5.9
Graphics 5.9
Gaming Graphics 5.8
HDD 5.7

SP1 and all updates are installed, stability is fine and once windows has finally loaded everything runs perfectly snappy, but boot time is taking the pish.

My silverlight installation appears to be borked.

I'm running Vista and I have Silverlight 1.0.30109, clicking uninstall results in the following error message.

This patch package could not be opened.
Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer patch package.

There's an update in windows update (KB951213) for silverlight that claims to install, but when I open windows update again it's there in the list.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Assume a database with up to 1 million books listed.

As a user is searching they have the ability to say "never show me this book again" or "never show me any books by this author again".

So a user may have selected 1000 books as "never show me this book again".

When they search I want to filter out those results.

I can think of the simple way to do it, but it doesn't seem like it would be an efficient way to do it.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to the best way to approach this, concepts rather than actual code.

Has anyone else noticed problems with sleep after installing VPC?

Sleep used to work perfectly, having checked the logs the computer stopped sleeping the day I installed VPC.

If I hit sleep the monitor shuts off but the computer doesn't, 5-10mins later if I hit a key the logon screen comes up, but I can't hit a key immeadiately after sleeping, that has no effect.

I miss sleep :(

Just popped up on my Mac - despite the fact I've installed silverlight 20 times already.

But more annoying than that, the link to get silverlight downloads an exe rather than mac dmg, oops!

My app doesn't need to accept HTML as HTML but HTML as plain text and something that looks like markup may be entered.

Therefore unless I'm very mistaken I need to turn off page validation and to stop HTML from getting rendered I need to HTMLEncode somewhere.

Some data may be exported as CSV for use in none HTML rendering applications.

My plan was to HTMLEncode all input text either before being passed to the BLL or in the BLL itself, so HTMLEncoded strings are stored in the database.

I would then need to decode only when the data is being externally exported.

Is this the correct way? Or should I not encode any data until it is being pulled out of the database?

At some point in the past I got XAML intellisense in VWD 2005 express, I can't for the life of me remember how.

I'd now like to get it in VWD 2008 Express so I can make use of the javascript intellisense and have a proper play with Silverlight over christmas.

I'm aware the project tools/templates don't work with the express editions but I'm hoping there is a way to get intellisense working.

Anyone? :D

I need a group of radio buttons which can store 3 items of data, the text for the label, the value and another value, therefore RadioButtonList is no good.

So I thought I'd use the repeater and have a template with two labels and a radio button with the groupname set.

But the groupname gets an id tagged on the end, so the radio buttons are no longer exclusive thanks to INamingContainer.

Am I missing an easy way around this?

I'd quite like to do the MCTS Web Apps certs.

I suspect when I ask my employer I will be told they won't pay a penny towards it.

Ideally I'd like to do the classroom led training, but it's rather pricey at £1k for 3 days.

Seen as I actually want to learn the content rather than just pass the exam, are the books any good?

Mine has deleted my library twice in about a month now, its set to monitor my audio folder, nothing has changed but its removed everything from the library. (edit: except the sample music that comes with windows)

I'm not really sure why :s

How do you handle errors in asp.net?

I had started throwing exceptions and using try catch statements but having looked around this seems to reduce performance.

Then I found this article http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Aa581779.aspx#aspnet_tutorial02_businesslogiclayer_cs_topic3
which seems to suggest I was right all along.

So if I have a method within a class to add a record to the database, should be throwing exceptions from that method when something invalid makes it through.

Or should I be weeding out and doing this checking on the btn_click event before I call the method?

Or should I just not be using exceptions but still handling it within the method, in which case what do you return?

Is it considered bad to have multiple TableAdapters for the same table in a dataset? And if so how should I get round it?

Say I have a table such as categories which has 5 fields 3 of which are mandatory but I have no reason to see them when I'm pulling the data out to populate a DDlist.

If I pull them out on a tableAdapter which has all 5 fields in the schema then I get errors.

So I'd have one table adapter with all 5 fields which I can use to add/edit/delete records, then a further tableAdapter which just has the query to get ID and Title.

Which brings me on to another question, I want things to be consistent across the app, but should I be using a dataset to get readonly data like that, or would I be better off having the tableAdapter with all 5 fields then just run a Sproc & datareader to get the results for the DDList?

It would appear I cannot directly access a textbox within a detailsview template, i'm wanting to insert the return value of a sql query from a previous wizardstep into a textbox in a detailsview control on the next wizardstep.

Should I just use detailsview.FindControl() or is there a better way?

Using VB.
