The one nuance I'd point out, however, is that users are benefiting from Microsoft's manipulations, while they are being hurt by Google's. Doesn't make Microsoft an angel or savior, but it does make them smarter. Google is jeopardizing their customer base. I was a heavy Google user. I used Google products as much as I used Microsoft products. Recent actions they've taken, however, has drastically reduced how much I use Google. Within a year, I may be Google free. I've got to assume there's plenty of others like me, and if Google continues there's likely to be plenty more in the future.

It's made every single time, which is why it's pointless. We know how many people use the previous versions, and their numbers were calculated the same way, so it doesn't matter in any way how many are sold to OEMs or end users.

In any case, the numbers may not be as high as some would like, but even though they'll try, the naysayers can't really claim this proves them right. Windows 8 is certainly successful by some measure, and can't in any way be claimed to be a "total failure". That's not to say there isn't still lots of room for improvement and a very steep uphill battle for Microsoft to overcome still. As Paul Thurrott said, this is a very nuanced topic that can (and should be) read in a number of ways, and we won't know the real picture for some time to come (possibly years).

Tech Off - Getting current method name in C# similar to __FUNCTION__ in C

The reflection route won't always work, due to inlining. The CallerMemberNameAttribute is more reliable, but it doesn't give you the current method, but rather the calling method. Should still work for what you're trying to do, obviously, but you specifically asked about getting the current method name. I'd also point out that the CallerMemberName approach can be misused, though that's probably not something you're worried about.

Coffeehouse - why does java have a classpath? ( or why doesn't .NET have one ? )

The CLASSPATH in Java is a horribly broken concept, IMHO. For instance, did you know there's more than one CLASSPATH? There's the normal CLASSPATH and a "boot CLASSPATH". You hardly ever have to care about that, but when you do, confusion ensues. Not to mention all of the other nightmares involved that you can easily find by Googling on Bing. In fact, it's such a pain that tools like JWhich were created to help you figure out what's going on.

Sharing binaries seemed like a good idea in the 90s, but I think we're mostly in agreement that XCopy is the way to go today.

Coffeehouse - Double dipping?

Try harder to troll, please. Double dipping? Give me a break.

"In situations where both the OEM and ODM has a deal with Microsoft, they'll work out between themselves who pays the license fee."

And the conspiracy theory like spin that this must be a symbolic gesture is void of any thought. No matter how you spin this, Microsoft now gets paid royalties on Android devices Foxconn makes, while everything else about their relationship remains the same. Both parties have said money is flowing in one direction here... to Microsoft.

A discussion about the patent situation and how the patent system is broken is something I could have gone with, but this post is pointless.

I have seen others (myself included) suggesting the keyboard shortcuts, but not as an excuse for the design (we don't have control over that) but simply as a faster alternative.

I honestly didn't think this thread was yet another "they moved my cheese" post. If it's that, I bow out now, as that rhetoric is growing tiresome.

Coffeehouse - Surface Smart Watch Rumors

Watches seem to be the big thing right now, at least in the rumor mill. But I'm skeptical. People have tried before, heck, Microsoft had SPOT, but it's always failed. Like the article said, the closest we've come to success so far is the Pebble, and that was purely on speculation. Those that have received a Pebble don't seem all that impressed. If someone actually does create a useful smart watch, they'll have the next iPhone product, but I'm just not seeing it happen, quite frankly.

Site Feedback - how do i view downloaded ppt slides

Where did you download the file from? Are you sure it was a zip file, or was it a pptx file? It sounds like it was a pptx file that you downloaded as a Zip file (the newer Office document files are actually zip files with a specific format, so renaming the file would allow you extract the contents, but said contents aren't directly usable by Office anymore).

Coffeehouse - Another forecast of RT's demise

@elmer: Prices drop on some devices by a whopping $50 and it must indicate a flop? I'm not arguing that RT is selling like gang busters, because it doesn't seem to be. But the logic there is just so flawed that I hesitate to call it logic.

Far more likely, the prices are dropping (and like DBV says, not just for RT devices but Pro devices as well) because OEMs are making room for the new line of devices we expect to hit the streets in June. It's pretty normal for OEMs to reduce inventory 3-4 months out from new product launches, and we've got less time than that now. Frankly, RT may die quickly not because it's selling bad (which it is) but because the next line of Pro products will out perform the RT devices in both performance and battery life while running full Windows.

It's still too early to call the ecosystem a failure, though. OEMs aren't backing out of the Windows 8/RT game just yet.
