The game is similar to games like
Terrarium and Robocode. It allows you to program your own battle bot in
any
.net compatible language.

What differentiates Virii from Terrarium is that if you want to
compete with your peers in Terrarium, you have to load their AI code on
your machine locally (in a sandbox with the help of the security
manager of course). Virii runs the simulation on the server, and the
bots are loaded
locally, which means there is no need for the security manager.
Think of it as a "write your own cheat patch" game. The
players can program the bot by handling the event delegates such as
"OnBotHitWall", and it can command the bot to move, fire bullets, or
fire sonar packets.

To run the game, double click on the virii.bat file under
virii/testEnv. The bat file will launch both the client and the server.
When you log in the server, you should be able to control the bot with
your arrows keys and the space bar to fire bullets. Press ~ key to
bring up the console, and type in "Load virii/bender.dll" (case
sensitive and without the quotes). Bender.dll is a test bot I wrote. Its code can be found under the bender project.

Type "Unload" in the console to unload the AI. You might have guessed
it at this point, you can hot swap the bot AI during a game.

Credits:
virii uses the Ovorp game engine. Ovorp is released under
the MIT license and it is NOT a copy-left license, similar to the BSD
license. I recomment you check out the ovorp if you havent already. As
one of the developers of the engine, i can say that ovorp is truely an
engine in its own class. its written in c# and it applies aspect
oriented programming concepts with the help of reflection. translation,
you can write your game with minimium amount of coding.

The graphics are contributed by Kris Michael
(krismichael at netscape.net).

A pre-beta version of virii is released on sourceforge, also
under the MIT license. Virii is an open source effort, feel free to
contact me (zee.yang at gmail.com) if you want to join the project.

in reply to Virii

<evnet:views>5311</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/22089/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>Virii (it's a game, not a vir*s :).
