Some people at Microsoft are working on a portable HttpClient. A pre-release can be downloaded via NuGet.

@robertsundstrom : Thanks, Robert. That was just being released as I recorded the videos. You're absolutely right though this is definitely worth having a look at that. Note, however, that it's still in "prerelease" form right now and does not include a go live license yet.
Related to the code divide between Phone8 and Win8 is there something related to the Service Locator Pattern for .Net that would work for these new frameworks?
