Chris, No. You access the controls by simply hitting one of the volume buttons on the side.
@jjbowles:OK, seems simple enough, does WP7 support control talk? the play/pause and volume rocker on the cord?

How about a video about how to remove the playback buttons again, once you are done playing music?
@MrAndersen: there's an app for that!
Unfortunately, the lock screen fades to black very quickly (even when the phone is plugged in, and the timeout is unrelated to the user-adjustable "Screen times out after" setting), so you don't get to see this "rockin'" screen for long...
