i found a video on  Mozilla drumbeat. in a video someone tell that microsoft make clone application and stole other idea. just like Silverlight come from Adobe Flash. Are this right ?

    LMAO

  • I am sure all enthusiasts are pleased with the foreshadowed technological changes....BUT... in the voted wish list for SL5 the dominant aspect was more cross-platform cross-device activity from MS.

Scott's performance made little reference to what MS are actively doing to expand platform/device penetration.  This great technology may be wasted if developers cannot be confident of platform/device spread.

    k

  • Isn't that exactly the reason that they stand on stage full height announcing new release, while you're hiding under this nice drawing behind the corner? Schooldays are over dear, this is business.

  • Hi Scott!

Thanks for sharing this video Cool,
Great news with silverlight 5, It has excellent feature.

I love that SilverLight is Growing for In and out of the Browser.

i found a video on  Mozilla drumbeat. in a video someone tell that microsoft make clone application and stole other idea. just like Silverlight come from Adobe Flash. Are this right ?

The quotes about Silverlight being a Clone are an indication of stating something before

checking out simple facts (a Problem with content on "WWW" ).

If you Google or Bing Silverlight one of the sites is Wikipedia. In the Wikipedia site

is a history of Silverlight and references. Most important aspect is Silverlight is

    for Mac,Linux,Symbian and Windows systems.

Silverlight is not a Clone or an Adobe Flash "knock off"..

The Silverlight engine is combination of several web

technologies (XML,JS,XAML and HTML). Special note: Silverlight and Developer tools

for Silverlight are free or very low cost. Example Visual Studio Express 2010, Web Developer Express 2010 are free tools and support Silverlight Development.

If a person checks on "Moonlight" it is a derivative of "Silverlight".

The growth of "Moonlight" along side Silverlight has provided users and developers

innovation and a market to create applications for users.

Silverlight has opened the door for cross platform use of data and media.

I hope this dispells a Myth about Silverlight.

Windows and Linux Can work Together

    Smiley

Silverlight/WPF.  Never made it.  Microsoft should just come to terms with this and push HTML5. End of story.

Yeah HTML5 for desktop ... nice ... man go dig yourself some grave

  • Christophe ArgentoChristophe Argento

I suggest you develop the same UI as the demo show with javascript and HTML5. Let's meet in 10 or 15 years when you're done!

  • Awesome ... can't hardly wait for the Pivot v2

  • Fernando Urkijo CerecedaFernando Urkijo Cereceda

I can only say "amazing". The current silverlight technology it's just outstanding flash and some html apps.

  • BenBen

I watched the video until the "live video stream" sequence. I was annoyed by the media streaming demo and moved the slider forward. Now I have a message "Media Failure. Try reloading the page or visiting the main site for assistance" and the video stopped.
    I think I'll wait for Silverlight 6.
    RegardsBen

  • RaghavRaghav

I missed it live. But now i will watch it happily :-). Thanks.

  • johnjohn

    @Paul:
HTML 5 has some nice features but when you really look at it from a capibilities perspective it is only as functional as Silverlight 1. It gives you vector graphics, some media controls and alllows you to maniplate it via JavaScript.

  • My 2 favorite features:

    1. Debugging for databinding
    2. Immediate-mode 3D API

I've always hated dealing with databinding because it's been like fumbling in the dark.  Many times I simply refuse to use binding at all because I don't want to deal with it.  Needless to say, debugging is going to be awesome.

And then the 3D demo was truly impressive, especially if it was created in one week.  It's going to be a huge leap forward in the visual capabilities of Silverlight.

Silverlight has the most elegant workflow/dev environment I've ever used..  I cannot wait for the 5 beta!!  HTML5 CSS3 and Javascript has it's place.. it's just not the Playboy Mansion that Silverlight owns ;)

  • Greg HollywoodGreg Hollywood

Great stuff - loved the presentation! Thanks Scott, for putting this on, it was just what I needed to see.
    Greg

  • Thanks again for providing great tools which scale and support a large development community.  My rather narrow interest is streaming video and in the media break-out session still did not get what I needed.  Most of the tools are targeting the big shops (makes sense from your perspective) but at some point the small guys that used MMS need to be addressed.  We were very happy to use 2003 Media Server and everybody had a player on their desktop.  The small streaming video houses are not worried about proprietary players - We make money by creating a publishing point, cut and past some html into our clients landing page, start shooting and encoding and away we go.  We have been forced to start using Flash based encoders such as uStream Producer, Livestream  or multi-camera VidBlaster.    I am sure you are headed there at some point but how soon.

  • Great News Scott Eagarly waiting for Silverlight 5 Beta release

  • One cant compare silverlight with HTML 5 , HTML 5 is ok but Silverlight is for real business.

  • MichaelMichael

I watched this streaming on my iPad, it works really well, but I do get some sound dropouts reguarly, maybe a bug in the conversion to iPad? Really impressive anyway.

  • RoyRoy

I am having issues playing these video's.  I downloaded the high quality recordings.  The keynote stops at about the 20 min mark in both Windows Media Player and Zune Player.  The 1st session also terminated at about the 20 min mark.  Both of them have many video freezes.  I am watching session 3 and it is haveing the same freezes.
Normally I can watch high quality recording with no problems.
I am currently downloading the standard quality keynote to see if I can get past 20 minutes.
Also, I cannot fast forward on any of the high quality recording in any of the players.  Sure wish I could skip past the part I have seen 10 times now.

  • That IIS media streaming to devices looks really good. I remember working on something similar, it had 2 working names - mono.flv and FLVDelivIIS7. It has been demoed to Microsoft employees in Reading, UK and has been demoed at ReMIX 08 in Brighton. There's a trace here: http://blog.monochrome.co.uk/2008/09/dont-want-to-wait-for-silverlight-3-to-get-your-flv-support/.

We could never figure out how to transcode live video to devices in real time but transcoding prerecorded media was quite simple. Shame we could not get involved in this project but hey, who knows, maybe we have influenced something? Still have the source somewhere, might have a play with my version again Smiley

  • schmirkenizerschmirkenizer Decision Dominance!

Well, as soon as my corporate web handler lets me view this sort of media, I'll be all over it... looks like a VPN disconnect is in order...

  • @Paul:do you even know what is Silverlight and WPF ? no you dont.

the web is diverse. the web is made of javascript + html and other technologies. the web is not a browser. The web is the ability to communicate . the web is not the w3c. standards are good , but standards are what they are , usefull but not always the best.

in my opinion , HTML5 is a mistake. the W3C should have fixed some issues with their previous standards before thinking about HTML5.

Now there is a huge problem with silverlight in my opinion. There are too much differences between silverlight and WPF.furthermore XAML is too complicated for a client developper , compared to MXML and Flash. But the solution is not to make Silverlight a subset. the solution would have been better if silverlight was a framework on top WPF, so you can limit yourself to silverlight for rapid web dev or go down to a more complicated level if you want to go further.

  • Dylan NgDylan Ng

@CbrAInK: Desktop? What is it? Never heard of it nowadays lol :)

  • Scrubbing of on-demand C9 videos (including this one) is horribly slow nowadays.  What's up?  To scrub ahead 40 minutes into this video requires a seemingly very, very long time.

  • srijan55srijan55

Standards are always overshadowed by innovations. Which means if HTML5 has capabilities like Silverlight4 (which is not the case... it is hardly Silverlight-1), the world tends to move beyond and technologies and their adoption go further than standards. The case with silverlight is anyways different... the w3c standards is really sub-standards and no way meet the demands of real immersive web experiences and real-world LOB apps.

  • DiegoDiego

@HCamper: I'm thinking about the moonlight roadmap http://www.mono-project.com/MoonlightRoadmap, they promised Moonlight 3 (Silverlight 3) in 2010 Q3, it's sill in beta, I was waiting the moonlight 4 alpha to 2010 Q3 but I don't see it still. I think the develop cicles of moonlight should be faster, these days we are thinking about silverlight 5, it will take a very long time to see it in production on unix-linux systems. However I think moonlight it's a great effort, I can't wait to see moonlight 4 working

Unable to stream live with these videos.  Trying to download even the Medium Quality WMV files eventually leads to same result: a msgbox that reads "<filename>" cannot be saved, because the source file could not be read.  Try again later, or contact the server administrator.
I've tried multiple browsers and even rebooted my router.  I have no problems downloading or watching other videos.  Any ideas?

  • I love the series but for some reason two of the videos have a problem.  While the FireStarter Session1 video was corrected for pixelating, the video is now slightly out of sync with the audio (at least it is now watchable Smiley ).  Also, the keynote speech has the same pixelating issue that the Session 1 video had (I tried downloading it 3 times thinking it might be a problem with the download process) and I am unable to download the Medium Quality wmv for the keynote speech.

I have a Dell XPS1530 with the Windows 7 64-bit OS.  Would it be possible to fix these please?

I can't wait for Silverlight 5, but want to make a suggestion for Silverlight 6. Can you add two more features please: 'Export to iPad/iPhone' and 'Export to Android' options would make Silverlight a true killer app and blow away HTML5.

  • SteveCSteveC

Apparently users didn't watch much of the video. While, from what I saw, it won't stream to Android, it will to iPad/iPod/Windows Phone 7.

  • SuikoSuiko

Silverlight 5 was shown working on the android tablet at mix11. The moonlight team (silverlight on linux team) got it working.
