One of the company's most recent projects has involved creation of a web application to help a large media organization manage subscription models and provide digital users the ability to view premium content. The solution is especially valuable during peak news cycles in which media sites experience high volumes of traffic. Windows Azure has helped meet the scalability needs of the solution, while helping reduce infrastructure cost in parallel. As a result of the deployment in the cloud, the company was able to duplicate staging environments for faster and more reliable testing. The systems built involve continuous integration and deployment so as to ensure always-on availability, because in the news, there is no downtime.

Building on Azure: InterGrid/Green Button

InterGrid provides its customers with on demand bursts of power for complex, intensive computing processes using the Windows Azure platform. Primary industries served include biotechnology, financial modeling, digital media, oil and gas, and design and manufacturing. Common usage scenarios entail the rendering of visually rich imagery, such as an automobile prototype, genetic DNA strand sequencing, animated 3-D movie frames, etc. Before the cloud, a typical process could take days to complete, and now can be finalized in a matter of minutes, representing a dramatic time and cost savings passed on to customers. The company has created an API called GreenButton to embed in third party software applications, for customers to take advantage of the service. GreenButton uses a patented Job Prediction algorithm to present the user with time and cost alternatives for running their job. They have just released the GreenButton SDK allowing ISVs and developers to embed the GreenButton API in their own applications enabling fast and easy access to cloud-computing resources. InterGrid/GreenButton Senior Developer, Peter Soukalopoulos explains.

Tanagram Partners: Exploring Natural User Interfaces In the Real World

Natural User Interfaces (or NUIs) seem to be one of the hottest buzz words in the development world these days. Microsoft is rolling out many technologies that map into NUIs, including Windows 7 Touch, Windows Phone 7 and the soon to be released Kinect for
XBOX. But with this new concept in how humans should “naturally” interact with software, what does NUI actually mean?

In this interview, Tanagram Partners explore a real-world approach to building a NUI, starting with a detailed storyboard for a real-world app. This video is technology agnostic, but really paints the possibilities of what “natural” really means in Natural
User Interfaces.

As a global powerhouse in electronics and electrical engineering, Siemens has always been synonymous with technological excellence, innovation, quality, reliability and internationality. Today, as an integrated technology company, bundling the comprehensive

Specifically, the Industry Mobility Infrastructure Logistics Business Unit is the world leader in mail processing solutions, including innovations in optical character recognition and postal logistics. The company is represented on all continents with production
facilities, sales and service organizations, representatives and service centers.

Of the many projects and products created by the Siemens engineers, the two discussed here are ARTread™ and DPR™. ARTread is the next generation OCR Reading technology optimized to process mailipece images in order to gather all the details from the envelope

SurfaceCube: Design Thinking for Natural User Interfaces

Microsoft Surface is a prime example of how natural user interfaces can change the way we interact with computers. As designers and developers, one challenge with creating natural user interfaces for multi-touch devices such as Microsoft Surface or Windows
7 is getting around the old ways of thinking and old habits for interface design.

Joshua Blake from
InfoStrat decided to tackle this problem by creating SurfaceCube. SurfaceCube is a simple 3-D puzzle game for Microsoft Surface which he designed to illustrate as many as the Surface Interaction Guidelines as possible. I had the opportunity to sit down
with Joshua and discuss SurfaceCube and the thinking behind some really interesting design decisions that makes it stand out as a natural user interface.

We also briefly discuss Joshua’s upcoming book about natural user interfaces and multi-touch development,
Multitouch on Windows: NUI Development with WPF and Silverlight, due Fall 2010 (since recording this interview, the book titled was updated). As a special offer to Channel 9 readers,

      <itunes:summary>
As a special offer to Channel 9 readers,
you can use the following coupon to order the book through the Manning Early Access Program and read the chapters as Josh writes them. Coupon code channel9y is good for 35% off
Multitouch on Windows: NUI Development with WPF and Silverlight when ordered through
manning.com, and expires on April 24, 2010.

InfoStrat.VE: Integrating Virtual Earth 3D into WPF and Surface Applications for Mere Mortals

Virtual Earth 3D has many applications, but until recently has only been practical on the web with a JavaScript interface. WPF applications could not use the full potential of

Information Strategies (InfoStrat) has the solution. They created a WPF / Surface control,
