  • Oh boy.... now I have to start commenting in here more! I admit that I have not commented in the Microsoft blogs too much, I will increase my participation I promise. I have been spending my time commenting with in Twitter and Facebook. I also spend some time in the tech blogs, not so much commenting (maybe once in a while) but do read many of them. I am frustrated with many of the tech reporters dismissing Microsoft and want to do my part to help. I have strong interest in the success of Microsoft. I even get slack from of the folks at work. I work in IT with many Microsoft products and when I get home it is much the same. (xbox, zune, surface, bing, halo, wp7, windows 8, etc...) You guys have some strong supporters out there and need to ack us supporting Microsoft. I am in it for the long haul! @MrVoyager

  • I watch every Ping show, comment on a few.

    Good work Laura and Paul!

  • Hey, where did my last comment go?  There must be a bug in the comments section.  I wonder if the thousands of other people leaving comments here have noticed the same problem.

  • Hi Laura and Paul!  First I'll say that I've been watching the show for a while and I rarely miss an episode.  I'm a developer that's trying hard to start a first business.  I do appreciate the work the Ping team does in researching news around the impact Microsoft technologies are having and in presenting them to us in a relaxed and fun way.

I'm thinking that I would participate more if a question was formulated and posted after a topic (doesn't have to be every topic).  Because certain news can run in so many directions (making it tougher to start commenting) I think it would help to give us a more defined starting point.

Although I can speak and write English decently, English is my second language and creative writing isn't my strength.  It takes time to write, so I'm wondering how many of the viewers are international viewers who would like to participate but have a time constraint.  Having viewers take a poll on some of the questions might help with this and also provide additional useful data for the show.
Thanks for the great work you guys do.

  • I do not comment on videos, because there's no comments area on the main page and I usually watch videos on the main page Wink

  • Google is actually filtering (censoring) results in the default web engine.

For example in Poland, if I type in google "tablica" hoping to find the portal "tablica.pl" which is a notice-board type portal (you post an annoucement that you have something to give/sell/trade etc.) you won't find it anywhere in the results. You will find an android app for the portal, but not the portal itself.

Bing gives it at the top. There are more examples, but I would have to dig in my memory a bit to remember them.

But still - I find google more reliable when looking for programming-related information. And Bing is very cropped in Poland, just the basic features.

Bad hair today Paul? or are you just wearing a hat indoors? Expressionless

Laura, speaking on the Episode 100 9guys I still haven't received mine yet Sad

I don't really comment on YouTube or any other video sites, just on channel 9 as this is really more of a discussion forum where you do encourage feedback.

    Go Xbox, woot!

It is great to see the market share of Windows Phone growing, everyone should have a little bit of the WP love.

  • I never got my NineGuy so I watch the episodes in rebellion, to punish you!

    Cool

Just kiddin', I agree with Laura, I don't comment unless I have something pressing. I feel like it's a waste of typing.

On the other hand, I watch every week; a better way to track metrics might be to see how many of the same visitors watch the same shows weekly, i.e. loyal followers/subscribers.

  • Comment? You two cover the subject so completely that there is nothing left to say.

  • I love your shows. I never miss one.

Incidentally, I shot a picture of Laura during an interview on the Build 2012 party, in Bellevue. I thought you may like it: https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=8A4CCC942399F814!53364&authkey=!ANQ64K0red4-cR4.

I bought an iPhone for my son, during my staying in WA. After seeing my Nokia 920 from the Build Conference, he now wants to get a Windows phone. We only have 3G around here in Brazil, no 4G yet, but Internet access is at least twice as faster in the Windows Phone than in the iPhone (4s). Screen size and battery life are also much better. And, of course, the hability to develop programs for Windows 8 in VS 2012 is priceless. The Apple 'intuitive' interface is not on par with Windows 8 Phone. It looks dated and it lacks the modernity of the W8 Phone interface.

The only problem I noiced in my Nokia 920 set is that it gets quite warm after a few minutes of Internet navigation. It looks like the processor is overheating a little.

I do watch all Ping episodes, but getting from Miro (which has a fairly long queue playing back-to-back) to web to log-in/comment (my cookies get cleaned every browser session) is a bit of a hassle... unless I am asked nicely like on this episode. • I really try to use IE once in a while, but I haven't found a good adblock for IE10 and it does not feel as snappy and quick as Chrome.

  • Great show, love watching on my Lumia 920.

I did not know about BING shopping till this slow.

    Thanks.

  • I guess you just have to keep asking questions to the viewers so they have a reason to comment.

I've never commented on a Youtube vieo but I comment all the time on Channel 9 because it's a smaller community with real forums.

    Youtube is just for videos.

  • @Paul II: Don't get me wrong, we are a fairly large Microsoft shop on the backend / desktop for our size company. It's the "consumerization of it" I speak of. It's so easy for many folks (in and out of IT) to get the "other" phones or tablet because it's what's popular. I on the other hand make it a point to plug Windows Phone when I can. I avoided buying the "other" tablets and now enjoy taking out my surface at meetings. Constant reminders that "Bing" is an option. I guess I get some slack for being so dedicated, like I said. I am in it for the long haul.

I saw a Nokia Lumia 920 a couple weeks ago. Definitely an improvement in many regards over the HTC Trophy I have... but it felt large. Specifically it felt heavy and a bit bulky. This is also coming from a guy with fairly big hands. I couldn't imagine using it with smaller hands. I heard some new HTC model is pretty good... perhaps the 8X?

I do agree that this channel isn't impartial. Though, I think it is an important thing to keep an eye on... I respect Google a lot. I think companies need to be called out when they deviate from expected behavior or don't have a consistent amount of transparency (e.g. all results being sponsored).

We'll now freak out because we have so many comments to reply to.

  • SergioSergio

Awwwww KEEP IT GOING GUYS!!! CHANNEL 9 AND YOU GUYS ARE COOL!!!

  • Like the show, watch it all the time. The only time I've felt like commenting was when you guys were using the green curtains from 1972 as a backdrop. I like that you guys cover just enough detail for us to dig if we want to. Keep up the good work.

  • My thoughts on Paul VS Dan on  View Numbers/Viewer Comment Posts on the PING Show:

In order to leave a comment you have to create an account and then you have to log in.  If you have a live account and are running Windows 8, you click on sign in and you are done.  However, if you don't you have establish one etc etc etc.....

When I get home from work I want to see what I missed during the day because I was in my cave at work crunching .NET Code building intranet sites and not allowed to ping Channel 9 cause of company firewall.  My brain is set on SCAN mode looking for things that interest me, but I am honestly not in the mood to argue or say "HEY GREAT Video"....whatever..(except today  Cool ). I take the knowledge and move on.

    So here is an idea????!!??!?!

    Enable OAuth/OpenID Support

    URL:http://blogs.msdn.com/b/webdev/archive/2012/08/15/oauth-openid-support-for-webforms-mvc-and-webpages.aspx

This is what I don't understand.  Microsoft is such a great company that  innovates and creates these awesome technologies like ASP.NET, and all these Web Tools.  So how about you guys freaking use them???  I mean....Channel 9 looks okay, but come ON!!! You guys could do sooooo much better!!!! Get rid of Silverlight as the primary video delivery vehicle and make it HTML 5, you could still give options to render in other plugins, flash, SIlverlight...whatever, but try to catch the generic audience who is immediately turned off if they hit channel 9 site for the first time and they get some message about them needing some plugin called Silverlight?!!?!ll  Silverwhat?!?!?!

      FIRST IMPRESSIONS MATTER!!!

Last thing...PLEASE MAKE YOUR SITE MOBILE FRIENDLY, please check this out: Scott Hanselman

I love Microsoft, but come one.....someone told me the SLEEPING GIANT is awakening.....with all these advances by Apple and Google and rumors of slow PC growth etc etc....but I say "Take a Gallon of 5 -HOUR Energy....apply SCRUM or AGILE and WAKE THE F$&#@ already!!!  Let's GO!!!

This post is not intended to pick on the Ping show or Channel 9, I think you guys provide a great service, but I believe you can do 10 times better in the way you deliver the content...For crying out load...you guys are Microsoft!!!!   I am posting these comments as a person who uses Microsoft Technologies, a .NET C# ASP.NET MVC developer who has taken 15-20 minutes of his precious time to give you my side of the story and how I see things. Break the chains that bind you and UNLEASH THAT GREAT POTENTIAL!!

    Respectfully,

    Alex

  • Duncan MackenzieDuncanma "yeah that's awful close, but that's not why I'm so hard done by"

@Alex219267: Hey Alex, thanks for the great comment... love the ideas. Don't take this as me (the dev lead for Channel 9) being defensive, but I wanted to point out a couple of things.

    1. You don't have to sign in to comment on a video, just type your comment, name and email address and click 'Comment', done. We definitely are trying to avoid any barriers to people commenting.
    2. Silverlight is only used if you don't have HTML 5 support or if you already have Silverlight installed. Hit Channel 9 with a machine that doesn't have Silverlight and boom, you get HTML 5. If you don't have Silverlight, are using a browser that supports HTML 5 *and* you get a Silverlight message, let me know ... that is definitely not the way we designed it to work.
    3. Totally agree about making the site more mobile friendly. We should do that and hopefully we will be able to do it sooner rather than later.

Appreciate your time Alex, and all the ideas!

  • :O My new favourite person (sorry Laura)

  • @Duncanma: Thanks for the reply.  My comments were based on what I have heard others say in the past in regards to Channel 9 videos.  I mentioned Silverlight because that is one of the primary reasons why the site had been blocked in my workplace a while back(I will bring up HTML 5 capability on our next meeting and see if they open it up again)  I love Microsoft, it allowed me to have the career have today, but like anything....there is always room for improvement....and there is always that web developer out there that is a critic Cool, not necessarily because he/she dislikes Microsoft, but because they care about the community and they see great potential in Microsoft.

@Duncanma, thank you for all you do for us, am sure you don't get many kudus/credit for all the work you put into Channel 9. Please let us know when Channel 9 is more mobile friendly.

FYI, you can append ?format=html5 to seemingly any video and it will default to the HTML5 player.

Yeah, it should fallback to HTML 5 without doing anything, but if you want to *force* it to HTML 5 you can use the drop down under the player (which basically just appends the query string for you)

  • Like most people here, I've been watching your shows regularly for quite a while, but I think I never posted a comment so far.

One of the reasons is that I generally watch the show after a few days it's been up, mostly because I don't notice, and by the time I do commenting would feel like resurrecting an old thread.

Maybe it's just me, but it might help if you could make the placeholder pictures that get posted on the C9 homepage a little more distinctive: as things are now it's kind of difficult to tell them apart. Smiley

  • Commenting on comments, wondering what the primary goal of the show is if not the actual content of the show.  Comments are nice and in some cases are even clever and funny.  But I watch the show for the show and not for the comments.

I continue to enjoy the show and have seen every episode but have not commented before.  That said, I can be bought with a "9 Guy" to post a comment on each episode.  Big Smile

    Comments do two things:

    1) They help us know what the 9ers enjoy about the show.  It's also nice to know that we're not "playing to an empty room" and that you guys do care about the content and we're providing you a little bit of value/happiness every week.

    2) If we can successfully foster a community, the show can seed ideas and then foster a more useful discussion than what the show alone can provide.

  • I am a long time consumer of Channel 9 videos, love watching Ping, Defrag and anything with Visual Studio as often as I can.  Usually because of work I can only watch them once every few weeks, saw this weeks episode and got my account fixed up on here to let you guys know I watch, and have never commented.  This is my first.  Keep up the good work!

  • @Paul II: Great point.  Was clearly thinking solely from a consumer of the content perspective.  I will work to start posting comments moving forward.  Especially since it appears that they are actually read.  Too often it is a "one way street" with regards to comments in this manner.  Looking forward to the further development of the Ping community.

I just like to watch... ;)

  • Surely, Ping Show is informative. That's why I keep watching it. Personally, I would rather be silent than speaking / writing something inaccurate / unhelpful. I can be critical at times, especially when I found the need and likelihood of making changes. Perhaps a simple comment like "This show is fun" is encouraging. On the other hand, I do believe the statistics of Ping Show viewing number is fairly accurate. Sorry, if I've nothing more to say, I would just be silent although I've been a Ping Show viewer for quite some time. Please do remind me to comment from time to time. Hey, I do not even have time to update my own personal web site. But I will do so in the future if possible.

  • I've been watching videos on Channel 9 for some time now but this was my first episode of Ping. You guys rock! I shall certainly be recommending this to others and tuning in every week!

  • IE was the best browser from v4.5 to v6 (or 1998 to 2004/5)
Paul is spot on, IE6-9 was a really poor experience compared to Google's Chrome and FF.
M$ marketing budget maybe wasted here. First make sure IE actually doesn't suck any more (maybe it doesn't but my fingers have been burnt), next gain a natural following by having a product that doesn't suck.
The only people marketing will work on are the people who cant make the critical analysis for themselves, these are the people that will have just used IE all along because it comes with windows.
The only way to get a loyal following back, is from a quality product....and time (for those old wounds to heal) Smiley
I want IE to be good (like .NET, Win8, SQL Server, WP, XBox). Installing Chrome is a pain in the rear, just less of a pain than using IE.
