Update: After checking, my HTPC was also set to hibernate when pressing the power button rather than sleep. Going into Control Panel | Power | "Choose what power buttons do", I changed this to sleep and now my living room PC springs back much faster. Smiley

    Hello @ kachchhu,

    The Windows XP key is not stored in a drive location.

    Normally the CD Key is part of the "Windows Genuine Label" on the

    CD case or Computer System.

    In the Computer System XP CD Key is stored in Windows Registery.

    For Windows XP  using registery editor look at:

           "local system/Software/Microsoft/ Windows NT/Current Version/".

    The Windows XP CD  Key information in the registery is not much practical use for most

                users.

    If your attempting to Re-install or Repair Windows XP may be your question is answered   below: 

    If your question really was "how do I recover Windows XP CD Key"

             then you can get free tools to find the installed CD key for WIndows XP

       to print out and use to re-install or repair your Windows XP.

      If you search on the web using (Google or Bing) for Nirsoft Software

    you will find in the tools section a tool call Product Key.

    Download the Prodcut Key Tool after the download is done you can run

    Product Key it will display Windows XP Product Key along with keys

    for other Products that are installed.

    If you have more questions or need help Windows XP your best choice

    is to check the Windows XP Forums at Technet Windows Client and Windows XP.

    The same procedure as every show. Run xbootmgr to trace sleep/hibernation issues:

    generate the Summary XML and look what takes too long to resume. Today I had an user where the ACPI driver takes too long to resume, so I suggested him to update the BIOS and this fixed it. But you can only see this if you use xbootmgr ;)

    Procmon is fine if you know where to start.

    Better is to run xperf (run "xperf –on DiagEasy" wait a few seconds of the HDD access and next run "xperf -d HDDaccess.etl" to dump the trace into a file). Now open the HDDaccess.etl, go to the Disk I/O graph, select the interval with the high usage, make a right click and select Summary table. Now you see how much bytes are written (size) by which process, how long has it took (service time). In Path name you can see which files are accessed.

    Don't do this with Program file, this would damage Windows.

    I thing you can do to save HDD space is to run this command BEFORE YOU install any Programs!

    reg add HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer /v MaxPatchCacheSize /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

    this disables the Microsoft Installer Cache folder in C:\Windows and this reduces the space usage extremely and you don't need to move data from the SSD to D.

    It's actually not recommended to store a battery at a full charge.

    Better to store it in a cool, dry environment at 40-60% charge.

    Thanks for working on my problem on the air. We have contacted Nvidia and we have not heard anything back yet. It is re-creatable. This issue happens on a laptop fresh out of the box. We also try to Stay with Adobe since this is our standard pdf reader.
    We have been using the older video drivers on this HP Laptop order. I am glad you confirmed our solution.
    We will be interested to see if it happens on our next order coming up.

  • I had a windows7 backup failing on me and was told to look for junction points from the C: drive to the backup drive.

    What are junction points? Can I write code that will enumerate them?   I would like to write an app that would evaluate a PC and list the reasons windows backup will not complete successfully.

    In my case, DIR /AL /S did not show any junction points to the backup drive. But there were a ton of junctions points listed in a windows.old directory and in c:\users directories left over from when I moved the PC out of a domain and into a workgroup. I deleted all of these unnecessary directories and the backup completed successfully.  What kind of code could I have written that would have analyzed the PC and listed the reasons my backup was failing?

     

     

  • @Carolynn:Adobe Acrobat uses the GPU for hardware acceleration. Since it is the NVIDIA driver that craches I can assume that the GPGPU implementation in Acrobat doesn't play nice with the latest driver. However I expect the problem to go away if you manually turn off the acceleration in Acrobat [EDIT->Preferances->Page Display->Use 2D Graphics Acceleration.

  • Hi, guys...great show.  I have a suggestion for those of us who would like to get a clearer view of your screen shots in the more compressed formats you stream in.  Can you use Zoomit (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897434.aspx), Mark Russinovich's cool presentation tool to zoom in those command windows and dialogs?  Its quick, very easy to use, and stops us from squinting so much.  Thanks!

    Adding junctions while may work, isn't supported. I am only going to give out supported info.

    Setting the MSI installer cache to 0 will save space, but may affect future repair scenarios. If you always have access to the original install source, then this may be useful for you.

    Trying to programmatically determine why the backup failed, and also trying to resolve the issue automatically may be a tall order... however, you might want to look at scripting via troubleshooter framework that is in windows.

    If your goal is to find out the Pkey used on your computer where in you dont have the same with you, Just use the below link to download the tool that will help you find all the MSFT Keys including MS Office on your computer.

    Its one of the lightest and best tool I can suggest..If anyone else has a better idea to share about the same Pkeys and how it is saved on the computer(in a file or registry etc) please do share it with us here.

    Check this out  Nirsoft Software a tool call Product Key.

    Download the Prodcut Key Tool after the download is done you can run

    Product Key it will display Windows XP Product Key so you can save the information.

    It is also very light at 114 kb for the installer or 47kb - 64kkb the

    no install versions.

     Great feature for  Product key  does not add registery key after running.

    THe Magic Jelly Bean Key Finder does leave a registery key after running

     and the size 1.2 megs may be a bit large . (^ ^)

    @Brian_Boston_LegacyWorks: Have you tried downloading the HQ version? If you do that you should see the video at the same resolution it was recorded at, no stretching or compressing, so that should give you a very good picture of the screen. If you're watching in the player with the smooth streaming version, the picture may not look as good depending on your connection speed. 

  • Hi Guys, I have a problem with my laptop that is driving me crazy. Originally, when I bought this laptop (ASUS G1-S) it came with Vista 32bit and everything worked great. Then I decided to do a clean install of Windows7 64bit since I love the new OS.

    The installation was smooth and didn't run into any problems. However once I am logged in I have noticed two nagging problems. I have tried many hours of troubleshooting and nothing seems to fix them.

    The first problem is that there is no sound from the laptop speakers. If I plug in headphones, then I get sound but not from the speakers. The strange thing is that when I first power up the laptop, I hear the ASUS bios startup sound from the speakers just fine. But once it is booted into Windows 7 there is no sound at all. I have tried reinstalling the sound driver from the Realtek site and that doesn't fix the problem.

    The second problem is that every once in a while, the computer will freeze up for several seconds and the Hard Drive activity LED will light up. During this time I can't do any I/O from the disk and if I am watching a movie it will just freeze and then resume after a few seconds. The problem seems intermittent and there are no errors in the even log or anywhere else that I can find. This is very annoying.

    I have considered downgrading back to the OEM version of Vista that came with the laptop but I hope you guys can shed some light on this. It seems to me to be driver related, but I don't know how to proceed in finding  a solution.

    Have you installed the specific sound drivers for this model system from the ASUS site? You unfortunately can't just install the generic RealTek drivers.

    Does your drive always thrash while watching a movie? What are the specs of your system? Can you try running your system with a 4GB readyboost drive and see if that changes the harddrive IO issue?

    I looked, but the ASUS support site only has Vista drivers, not Windows 7. Should I try the Vista64 driver? Interestingly, the device was recognized by Windows 7 during install and it was configured as a Realtek device. Device Manager says the device is working properly, but there is no sound from the speakers. But why does it work fine with headphones? Isn't it the same audio device?

    The disk issue happens 2 or 3 times throught the day when I'm at work. Disk activity LED lights up, and machine freezes. It lasts from 10 to 15 seconds. When I am watching a movie it seems to happen more often (or maybe I just notice it more). During a 2 hour movie it will happen 3 or 4 times. What do you recommend for a readyboost drive? This laptop has a built-in SD card slot or I could use a USB key.

    Both problems started after I upgraded to Windows 7. Are there any logs or tools I could use to troubleshoot?

    I forgot to mention the laptop has 4GB of RAM and physical memory usage is around 2GB according to Task Manager.

    @gelatus:The problem you having is with Playback and Communications and Enhancements, Levels.settings.

     Start with Open TaskBar Volume Control

    check the Playback Devices go to the Communications Pane

    and select the "Do Nothing" check box exit the Pane.

    While still in Play Back Devices and Speakers and

    Select Enhancements for Speaker Fill,

     Bass Management,

     Loudness Equalization.

    Then Go To the Levels and Select the 50 %- 75 % level for Speakers.

    Then go to the Properties tab for Speakers you should see a test option

    run the Built-in test. You should Have speaker sound.

    You may need to Adjust the Master level until so it does not Buzz or Distort on Playback.

    @gelatus:Several items to check and change for System / Disk I/O and Hangs:

     Item1) Check Windows Update Settings you might make it notify only.

    item 2) If your running MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) add the folders

     for %windir%\Software Distribution to exceptions. Change the Task Library for MSE

    idle time to higher wait period.

    Both item 1) and item 2) stopped a lot of Disk Thrashing and Stops for my system.

    Mostly I run Office 2007 and Visual Studio 2010 at work.

    I ended up restoring the laptop using the OEM recovery disk. This put me back on Vista and I then applied all the available patches (running SP2 now). That fixed my problems with the sound and disk thrashing. I also noticed several missing features on the laptop are now working (special hot keys and external LED display are now functional).

    I think in some cases it is better to stick with what is supported by the manufacturer. Several ASUS drivers and utilities are only installed with the factory DVD. Some of these were not available in the driver support downloads section.

    I miss Windows7, but Vista with SP2 is not too bad. It is nice to have everything work 100% on my system. ASUS has a nifty utility for window management that provides similar functionality to Aero Snap.

    You can always try an upgrade to win7, which if anyone knows me, goes against my better judgement. I tend to not prefer upgrades if I can at all help it.

    I too find it extremely annoying when drivers are not present on the download sections of OEM sites.

    One thing that you can try, depending on how the OEM recovery disk is constructed, is pointing to it as a source of the drivers while in win7.

    But I am sorry that your experience with win7 on that hardware was less than stellar.
