Great show! Thanks for answering my question regarding the deletion of files I think the problem was in the PHP module which I downloaded for IIS. However, I got a system called Memcache which uses the memory instead of the file system. Most likely, it is a bug in the PHP module I think. Tried using the "Remove-Item c:\temp\* -recurse -force -exclude *.exe" command in Powershell some days ago, but then Powershell just lagged away not really doing annything =(

To the format question, I created 2 partitions and install Windows to 1 and put my data on the second partition and add the folders from the second partition to the Windows 7 libraries. If I have to reinstall Windows, my data are not lost. This is how I do it for over 10 years. I never store personal data on C:

Actually there are ways but they are iffy and microsoft can get pissed
at you for doing it (which is always a reason to do it.
Give back some pain they original caused is always satisfying)

You can hook the function(s) that the programs
use to turn off the aero and just stub it out.
You can also write a driver that does the same thing.
You can also patch the program itself to remove the api calls.

All these methods are a lot of work though and requires
advanced technical knowledge.

For bootcamp/Mac you can see the Mac from windows. I'm not sure vis versa, once I got Win 7 on my system I never went back (Win 7 rocks ). Anyways it is in the network places I think it is called option in the Explorer. If you've installed the bootcamp utilities after installing windows you'll see a Mac option in the list.It seems to be mounted read only by default.

@martinmine:I notice this kind of behavior on several OSs. I was a sys admin of among other things a largish SAN (130TB RAID6 disk, 3PB tape library). One of the groups at my work had a program that would dump 10k-100k files in one folder. That was the name of the game, it was coming from a camera, ~400kB images taken every second for days and were all logically related to each other so I get why the program was designed to put everything into one folder. Even running directly on the fileserver (Solaris 10, 4Gbps fiber channel connection) deleting, restore commands from tape etc would take ~20 min per folder). File systems just aren't happy with that many files. If you broke the command down into logical chunks (forgive my bash errors as I'm running on windows at the moment):

for i in [a-z]; do; rm /subfolder path/$i*; done

or the windows equivalent it would run much faster. My guess is that their is some data structure that is getting appended to in the preprocessing before the actual execution of the delete operation that gets slower the longer the list. Windows might be the same, you should give it a shot. But yes I agree with Gov if at all possible find and fix the reason for that many files in the first place.

As a developer I think when you are dealing with things of that size what really should be done is the images should be appended to one, or few (say one per hour) files and the program should handle the conversion from a binary blob back into individual images. Developers are lazy + in this case they'd say "well if we leave them as gifs you can use someone elses program if you wanted to process the files rather than be stuck with ours", which is true but is also an excuse for not developing the infrastructure to pack and unpack your huge number of measurements.

For the Bootcamp question, you can use MacDrive from mediafour.com.  However, as Gov stated (and as i've experience), it doesn't always do the best at writing and i've had it fix corrupt writes using Disk Utility to fix it. 

As for the file system, I wanted offer an alternative to FAT32 (as suggested by Gov), you an use exFAT (the sucessor to FAT32) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExFAT) in Windows 7 and OSX (10.6.5+), as well as there is a driver for XP (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955704).  With exFAT you won't get security like NTFS or HFS+, but it will allow you to share files between machines that are larger than 2GB

Talking about Gibson's Spinrite and formatting a disk without losing the data, you can use the former to "lift" the information and rewrite it into the drive (actually, the software do this twice to ensure the sector is reliable). That's pretty useful not only to maintain the magnetic plates, but also to focus the SMART system onto some latent problem on a sector.
