Another tip for IE desktop shortcuts, especially if you have a site that either has little "empty background" to hit, or if it's trying to capture right-click; or if you just don't want to take your hands off the keyboard:
Tap your Alt key to bring up the menu bar (if you don't have it visible), and under the File menu is a submenu called Send. One option is "Shortcut to Desktop".
