RE: Product Key - assuming you can guess the correct SKU of Windows (probably Home on laptops), you'll still need media to do the install.

The product key on a laptop does not use the media that Microsoft provides via MSDN, Retail or to Enterprises.  You need to get the media from the OEM so that the product key works.

How to pin a specific folder to taskbar in Win7.

Create a shortcut of the Windows Explorer on the Desktop which points to a folder:

    %windir%\explorer.exe /n,/e,D:\Data

Now drag it to the taskbar. Repeat this for all folders you want pin.

    Windows booting up slowly.

make sure you have the service Superfetch (+ReadyBoost service in Vista) running and next try to speed up the boot with the help of my guide. This trains the advanced prefetcher in Windows 7/Vista. If this doesn't speed up the boot process, follow my 2nd guide to make a boot trace and compress the boot_BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER_1.etl as 7z or RAR and upload it somewhere. I can take a look at it.

Where do you store drivers so automatic searching finds them?

Pnputil is fine and I use it to removed superseded drivers. I did this last week and saved GB of HDD space.

What are the differences between Win7 RC and RTM

RC = Release Candidate, RTM = final version you buy. Both are stages in software development:

How to find out which version of Windows is on a PC, possibly by product key

MS doesn't allow you this, but google for a PID checker software. It runs a Windows API call to check the key and it tells you what kind of key it is (Edition + check for type : OEM, retail or MSDN key). I coded my own in 5 minutes.

Do you really need to defrag your PC?

No, windows does it when PC is idle. If Windows is booting slowly check the link I posted earlier.

  • They actually make a specific software I believe called the Eraser, but it takes a very long time to completely erase a file.

  • RE: What are the differences between Win7 RC and RTM?

Just for the record: The question wasn't whether running Win 7 RC was a good idea. The question was what the differences between RC and RTM are.

  • @windev:

"The product key on a laptop does not use the media that Microsoft provides via MSDN, Retail or to Enterprises.  You need to get the media from the OEM so that the product key works."

Sorry windev, but that isn't the case. You can use MSDN media to install laptops with the key on the Microsoft sticker on the laptop case. You MAY have to do activation-by-phone in some cases though.
