			<![CDATA[<p>IPv5 there is a thread about it here: <a href="http://www.oreillynet.com/onlamp/blog/2003/06/what_ever_happened_to_ipv5.html">http&#58;&#47;&#47;www.oreillynet.com&#47;onlamp&#47;blog&#47;2003&#47;06&#47;what_ever_happened_to_ipv5.html</a></p><p>Basically the header for the connection has a place where it says what version of the protocol you are using. &quot;5&quot; was already assigned to another protocol (ST streaming IP protocol) so they had to go to v6 for the headers to work out. The proposal for &quot;IPv5&quot; supposedly happened in 1994 and was supposed to be implemented by 1996. Not sure how close it is to IPv6 but it seems like it had a lot of the same features, 16bit addresses vs 4 etc. I guess there wasn't a clear need for it so &quot;5&quot; got assigned to something else, and now we are finally getting to the point where the larger addresses are necessary and they have to skip a version.</p><p>posted by madscientist</p>]]>
