Active Directory Scenario Test Presentation 2011

Neil Wang, Developer, presented a test for the Windows AD “Join the domain” and “unjoin” scenarios. The protocol exchange that occurs on the wire when a Windows 7 client joins a Windows 2008 R2 domain were analyzed at the 2011 Active Directory Windows Protocols Plugfest. Zhenduo Zhang, Developer, stepped through the code for a test case. Dean Wells, Senior Program Manager and Billy Jack, Senior Software Development Engineer, answered AD protocol interoperability questions. The scenario is described in MS-DISO, a Windows Protocol Document.

Fabrikam Jets - Integrating Codename "Dallas" with AppFabric Access Control

This screencast shows how AppFabric Access Control (AC) can be used to provide identity federation, trust delegation, service authorization and integration with Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS), to control access to services based on Windows Azure.

In the demo, Fabrikam Jets uses the Dallas Portal, AC and ADFS to grant employees of Contoso Marketing access to Microsoft Codename "Dallas" at Fabrikam's expense, using Windows authentication, without exposing Fabrikam's Dallas account keys. It also shows how Fabrikam can revoke the privilege later.

The source code for this example is now available soon on this MSDN Code Gallery page.

Note: The example has been updated to work with the V1 version of AppFabric Access Control. There were two changes from the CTP version to V1 that made the update necessary: 1) V1 uses version 0.9 of the WRAP protocol, instead of version 0.8, and 2) the issuer name generated by V1 is the base URI of the STS endpoint for the service namespace, instead of the full URI. The screen cast has not yet been updated, and still shows the user providing the full URI of the STS endpoint as the key description, rather than the base URI. In all other respects, however, it remains accurate.

Pilar Ackerman, Senior Program Manager, presented an Active Directory system overview and discusses this system overview document at the 2009 Active Directory Windows Protocols Plugfest. Richard Ward, Distinguished Engineer, answered protocol interoperability questions. MS-DISO, to be delivered in an upcoming Windows Protocol Document release, specifies how the protocols that comprise the offerings from Microsoft are used together to maintain a relationship with the domain. It also describes how protocols such as Netlogon RPC [MS-NRPC] are used to augment authentication and authorization actions, and how protocols such as Kerberos [MS-KILE] and LDAP [MS-ADTS] are used to interact with domain controllers.

Troubleshooting Active Directory Issues with Windows

Richard Guthrie, Escalation Engineer, presented a session covering debugging tools that can be used for troubleshooting Windows at the 2009 Active Directory Windows Protocols Plugfest. Richard answered windows debugging questions as well. Debugging with Windbg including assembly call stack analysis examples were provided. Tracing calls with Windows ETW and IDNA tracing were demonstrated. Provided a demonstration of a few resource kit tools commonly used for Windows debugging as well as some sysinternals tools (process monitor & filemon).

Nathan Muggli, Lead Program Manager, presented a discussion of MS-ADSO, a system overview document at the 2009 Active Directory Windows Protocols Plugfest. Suneel Parthasarathy, Lead Developer, and Matthew Rimer, Senior Developer, answered protocol interoperability questions. MS-ASDO, to be delivered in an upcoming Windows Protocol Document release, describes the relationships of the system of protocols that comprise client-server behavior of the Active Directory System. MS-ADSO describes the intended client-server functionality of the Active Directory System and how the protocols in this system interact. System architecture, abstract data models and use cases including domain join are covered as well.

This geekSpeak, hosted by Microsoft Developer Evangelists Glen Gordon and G. Andrew Duthie, features Ron Rohlfs, practice area lead with InterKnowlogy.

Ron spends a lot of time architecting Sharepoint solutions for customers. In this geekSpeak, Ron shares some insight into one approach to solving the enterprise problem of managing the sharing of information on your intranet, but also with customers and vendors outsider your organization. Here’s the problem space, in Ron’s words:

It is not uncommon for a business to deliver web based content to multiple groups of end users. For example, a business may wish to deliver content to both internal employees on its intranet, and external users such as clients or vendors on an extranet or a publicly accessible Internet site. In these cases, it is often desirable to use multiple means for authentication. Many businesses authenticate its internal employees against Active Directory. However, it may not be desirable to add extranet users to Active Directory. Extranet users, such as clients or vendors, tend to turn over more rapidly than employees, requiring continuous updating. Furthermore, exposing Active Directory over a publicly accessible site may be associated with an unacceptable level of security risk.

Specifically Ron shows how to have some users authenticated against Active Directory while some users are authenticated against a custom provider. Thanks to the tight integration between Sharepoint 2007 and ASP.NET this is now much more straightforward than in the past. We were fascinated to realize that you can tie Sharepoint right into the good ol’ provider model of Membership and Personalization in ASP.NET. Who’d have thought you’d be using the ASP.NET configuration tool to manage users for Sharepoint site?

Ron has some invaluable guidance for dealing with the Site Collection Administrator when switching membership providers. Ron also warns of a gotcha around membership provide, role provider and site administrator. Sprinkled into the conversation are some good tips on managing SQL Express connections string, web.config files, and more.

So if you can get through the technology experts fumbling around briefly in PowerPoint during the recording, you’ll be rewarded with some useful information.

This is what we call "Datacenter Provisioning" and creates databases in SQL server, users and roles structures in the ADAM and websites in the IIS.
After this Datacenter Provisioning is done, each tenant will be able to perform a "Tenant Provisioning" which will add tenant information in those repositories and will let the tenant to start trying the application.

TechNet Radio - Microsoft Advanced Group Policy Management

Blain Barton continues his conversation on Group Policy, discussing how Microsoft Advanced Group Policy Management increases administrators’ control over managing Group Policy objects. He speaks with Kevin Sullivan, a Lead Program Manager, and Winni Verhoef, a Senior Product Manager focused on the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack and the underlying components of Advanced Group Policy Management. They talk about the difference between what Windows Server does already with Active Directory and GPMC and what’s in the Advanced Group Policy Management as well as workflow management, offline editing, versioning, the roll-back mechanism and what’s new in relation to Windows Vista.

Kevin Sullivan – Kevin has been working in the technology field focused on Microsoft management technologies since the early ‘90s. With IBM Global Services he worked on many Standard Desktop projects and SMS roll outs beginning prior to SMS 1.0. He began training and consulting on SMS, Windows and eventually Windows 2000 and Active Directory. Group Policy was a relatively heavy focus for customers as it was new, it was very different from System Policies and it was essentially a part of the Active Directory offering which was a huge paradigm shift for IT organizations. In the last seven years he’s worked for software companies as a Technical Product Manager assisting in all facets of product development. Working with developers to help them understand the customer needs has been a major focus of his work along with being a bit of a technical evangelist. Helping customers understand how Microsoft’s technologies fit into their environments has always been a critical component of his work.

Winni Verhoef – Winni Verhoef started his career at Microsoft 8 years ago in The Netherlands as an Evangelist. In that role, he promoted Microsoft’s client products to audiences in various programs (TS2 like) until he shifted to educating partners on the server side with the introduction of Windows 2000 Server. Later, Winni joined marketing and managed several Microsoft server products. He then moved to the US 2 years ago and into the client group since less than a year. After some successful projects like Windows Vista Registration and the Windows Vista Product Guide, he is now focusing on the Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack, in particular the underlying components of Advanced Group Policy Management and Asset Inventory Services.

Kai Axford – Kai Axford is a Sr. Security Strategist at Microsoft.

Mark Griesi – Mark Griesi is a Security Product Manager on the Security Response Team at Microsoft.
