Abstract:

Writing code that is resilient upon errors (API failures, exceptions, invalid memory access, and more) has always been a pain point in all languages. This being still largely an unsolved (and actually rather loosely-defined) problem, C++11 makes no claim of having solved it. However, C++11 is a more expressive language, and as always more expressive features can be put to good use toward devising better error-safe idioms and libraries.

This talk is a thorough visit through error resilience and how to achieve it in C++11. After a working definition, we go through a number of approaches and techniques, starting from the simplest and going all the way to file systems, storage with different performance and error profiles (think HDD vs. RAID vs. Flash vs. NAS), and more. As always, scaling up from in-process to inter-process to cross-machine to cross-datacenter entails different notions of correctness and resilience and different ways of achieving such.

To quote a classic, "one more thing"! An old acquaintance—ScopeGuard—will be present, with the note that ScopeGuard11 is much better (and much faster) than its former self.

We were fortunate and honored to have Andrei Alexandrescu speaking and Walter Bright in attendance at GoingNative 2012. Walter and Andrei are the co-custodians of the D programming language. Walter invented D about 11 or 12 years ago. Andrei has been an unrelenting champion and contributor to D for a long time and is the author of the book The D Programming Language. When/why did Andrei get involved with D? We'll find out. We filmed a conversation with these two legends right after GoingNative 2012 ended.

So, what is D? What makes it special?

D is a modern native programming language (not really an evolution of C++ as the name might imply. C++11 is an evolution of C++... D is it's own thing. It's D.). D is imperative (with C-like syntax), statically-typed, object-oriented, dynamic-friendly (via static type inference), garbage collected (optional), shared-nothing by default (nice!), functional-friendly (you can write pure functions that are verifiably pure), polymorphic, generic, and COM-friendly, too. D is also a low-level systems programming language.

D takes many powerful modern programming ideas and idioms and makes them easy to use while keeping things purely native. We love this! Too often we hear things like, "Well, if you go fully native then you loose productivity..." Whatever. D proves you can have your cake and eat it, too.

Andrei Alexandrescu is the co-designer of the D programming language, technical author and research scientist at Facebook. He is also one of the world's C++ (and D...) template masters. His talk on PBD (policy based design) incorporated the mind bending use of variadic variadic template templates. As Gilad Bracha says, learning is brain damage.Thanks for the headache, Andrei! Scott Meyers is one of the most respected C++ practioners in the industry. He is the author of Effective C++, More Effective C++, and Effective STL. Scott's talks on the C++11 Memory Model and Perfect Forwarding were outstanding. I wish we could post them here Smiley

Herb Sutter runs the C++11 ISO committee and is one of the world's leading C++ authorities. Congratulations to Herb and the rest of the people involved with pushing the language forward on the recent ratification of the C++11 international standard (treaty)! Herb's also Microsoft's architect for native programming languages, with an emphasis on C++. We'll find out here what Herb thinks of D.
