AutoCAD and the Kinect for v1

This project was highlighted just a bit ago, AutoCAD and the Kinect, but at the time it was only for the SDK Beta 2. Kean wasn't going to leave it at that and has since updated it for the Kinect for Windows SDK v1.

Beyond the v1 update, he also provided the narration of his upgrade...

Updated AutoCAD + Kinect for Windows samples

While attending the recent hackathon, I spent a fair amount of time porting my AutoCAD-Kinect integration samples from the Beta 2 of the Microsoft Kinect SDK (for the Kinect for Xbox 360 sensor) to the released SDK for the Kinect for Windows.

It was pretty impressive just how many of the Kinect APIs were broken between Beta 2 SDK and the final release (you can hear some additional commentary on this in this .NET Rocks episode). I understand the desire to get the API in shape prior to release – you really want to minimise any messy, legacy dependencies – but the full extent of the changes certainly took me by surprise. The good news is that there are a number of APIs that make point cloud creation simpler, for instance, so I was able to pull out some of the more icky code from the samples.

Anyway, here are the updated samples. <itunes:summary>This project was highlighted just a bit ago, AutoCAD and the Kinect, but at the time it was only for the SDK Beta 2. Kean wasn't going to leave it at that and has since updated it for the Kinect for Windows SDK v1. Beyond the v1 update, he also provided the narration of his upgrade... Updated AutoCAD + Kinect for Windows samplesWhile attending the recent hackathon, I spent a fair amount of time porting my AutoCAD-Kinect integration samples from the Beta 2 of the Microsoft Kinect SDK (for the Kinect for Xbox 360 sensor) to the released SDK for the Kinect for Windows. If you’d like to diff the changes with the original version for the Beta 2 SDK, here these are, too, although be warned that I did take the opportunity to do some refactoring, particularly with respect to the speech recognition capability (I’ve now added some events to allow derived classes to add words to be recognized – previously it was all munged into base KinectJig class). Aside from the complexity of the migration (which was thankfully minimized due to the fact I’d previously implemented a base class with much of the needed functionality), there were a few behaviors that still seem a little quirky: once started, the sensor now never seems to turn off, even after it has been stopped.
Shopping for a Car? Try Bing's Instant Answers

Another recent update to the Bing search engine involves the addition of auto-related instant answers. If you’re searching for a particular make and model of a vehicle, the search now returns a quick summary of the top info available on the car which displays at the top of the search results. This info includes things like the MSRP, fuel economy, and user rating. Links to the MSN autos site are also provided for things like specs, safety, reliability, and reviews. If you know you’re ready buy – or at least ready to go visit your dream car in real life – a link to local dealers and services is found below the instant answer along with links to listings on the MSN auto site.

I used this feature to check out the Volvo C30, the car we’re thinking of getting next year (and no, not because Edward drives one). This Volvo practically drives itself! But the 19 miles per gallon (city) displayed in the instant answer has me reconsidering. Maybe I such search for hybrids instead. Suggestions?

If you know you’re ready buy – or at least ready to go visit your dream car in real life – a link to local dealers and services is found below the instant answer along with links to listings on the MSN auto site. I used this feature to check out the Volvo C30, the car we’re thinking of getting next year (and no, not because Edward drives one). This Volvo practically drives itself! But the 19 miles per gallon (city) displayed in the instant answer has me reconsidering. Maybe I such search for hybrids instead. Suggestions? </itunes:summary>

You’ve heard of Xbox 360 mods, but have you ever seen anything like this? A gamer modded his car with Xbox 360 components including game controllers and an Xbox console soldered into the dash. According to the photo’s description on flickr, the car actually has two 360’s, two projectors, and two flat screens inside. Hopefully, the gamer doesn’t play when driving! Yikes!
CalCars... Taking a Prius Hybrid to 100+ MPG!

So Laura heads to Maker Faire and gets indepth information on those ridiculously high gas prices. Okay, well kind of. She talks to the founder of CalCars and learns how they can convert a Toyota Prius so that it can be charged using your household electricity ... power that is a whole lot cheaper than the gas a normal Prius uses to generate all of its electric power. Learn how they make this work, and how much easier it would be for Toyota to make their hybrids work this way in the first place. Enjoy! Oh and Laura's not so bad either.
