Bill Hill: The Future of Reading on the Web, Part 2

This is the second part of the interview that Dan and Christian did with Bill Hill. (See

Part 1 here).

While many people know Bill from his work on True Type and his passion for improving screen readability, Bill is now working on improving Web readability in Internet Explorer and how reading on the Web hasn't improved since the early days of browsing.

In this part of the interview we continue with the discussion on font embedding. But this time Bill Hill tells us also about readability in general, shows us his website and thoughts that he had during designing the reading and layout experience for it. In
one of the various side stories he explains to us how and why the letters in our alphabet evolved as they did. By the end of the interview Bill Hill shares some personal stories that includes also how he started to learn reading animal tracks.

Bill Hill - A Hike Around Microsoft's Forests (Happy Birthday Video #5)

Last year Bill Hill, director of advanced reading technologies, was our first interview. And one of our most popular to boot.

One thing we remembered from last year was his explanation that
Windows is not the most important OS.

It's a bit long (an hour and a half), but you'll learn all sorts fo things about reading, computers, Microsoft, and things like why pop-up ads hurt readability. Watch Bill get on the ground and demonstrate how humans started to read and write. Learn all about
Microsoft campus (and get some lessons on the plant life there too).

Bill is passionate about tracking animals and spending time in nature, which he uses to understand how to make better type and layouts.

Bill was a newspaperman in Scotland before he got into computers in the 1980s and has many stories.

Bill Hill: Homo sapiens 1.0 - The world's most important operating system

The most important operating system developers write software for is not Windows or OSX or Linux or Android. It's Homo sapiens 1.0. We make software for people first. Very wise words from a very wise soul, Bill Hill.

Bill passed away on October 16, 2012 from a sudden heart attack. We are all shocked and heartbroken. He was a very special member of the Channel 9 family and his contributions to C9, Microsoft and the industry are legendary. His devotion to learning - and to making knowledge readily available to everybody - are a testament to who he was as a person and scholar. Bill was deeply human and unusually brilliant; an iconoclastic mind with a heart of gold.

This short video clip is from 2004. It is rife with Bill's wisdom and captures the essence of his passion for reading, writing, learning and knowledge. We recommend you watch more of his excellent conversational material. It's full of visionary thinking. Classic Bill.

To Bill's family and close friends, our deepest condolences and love.
