Herb Sutter: C++ Questions and Answers

Herb's last appearance on C9 was a relatively short chat with me about C++0x. You wanted more questions asked and some of you thought I was just too soft on Herb. Well, Herb decided that the best way to get the questions you want asked is, well, to have you ask them. Most of the highest user-rated questions were asked and Herb answers with his usual precision.
Visual Studio Lab Management: Build, Deploy and Test

Most companies don't have dedicated development and test environments that are clean, easy to reset and similar to the production environment. This makes it very hard to test software applications. Visual Studio Lab Manager 2010 will allow you to define,
configure and create complete development or test environments as needed. It can coordinate both physical and virtual environments, and comes with an incredibly powerful suite of effective tools that makes managing environments simple and also very cost effective.
Visual Studio Lab Management 2010 is an add-on for Team Foundation Server 2010 and will go RTM at the end of August 2010.

In this short screencast (20 minutes), you will be able to see Visual Studio Lab Management in action. A complete lab build will be kicked off that will deploy a web application and the underlying database to a virtual environment of two virtual machines.
After deployment, automated UI tests will run on the deployed application for verification of the defined test cases.

Speaker: Pieter Gheysens

About the speaker:
Pieter Gheysens is the founder of Sparkles (www.sparkles.be) and focuses as a Visual Studio ALM MVP and Certified Scrum Master on Application Lifecycle Management solutions for the Microsoft .NET
Development Platform based on Team Foundation Server. During the last 10 years, Pieter has been involved in many large enterprise development projects as a developer, team lead and software architect. He's passionate about setting up the optimal team development
environment to deliver high quality software and strives to get the best out of people, tools and processes. You can read about his experiences at intovsts.net.
VISUG Recording: F# Introduction

F# will ship as a first class citizen of Visual Studio 2010, and .NET 4.0 will include some special support for F#. But what is F# and why should you care? This talk will try to address that question. First we'll look at the basic building blocks of F#:
functions, pipelining and immutability. This should give you a feel for what a functional program in F# looks like. In a second part, we'll see some real world applications and examples of F# in action. We'll conclude with some pointers so you can continue
exploring F# on your own.
This is the session recording of the Belgian Visual Studio User Group, presented by Kurt Schelfthout.

Niners on 9: Sven Groot - Past, Present and Future

Sven Groot is a long time Niner and one of the more active contributors to the C9 forums (you'll note that Sven answers technical questions when he can
and has always been respectful in the way he interacts with his fellow Niners). Sven is also a PhD student at Tokyo University where he is working on and thinking about large scale distributed clustered computing (now we know why he was so keen on my producing
a Dryad piece for Going Deep - Sven is a clever guy...).

Sven was in town recently on vacation in Seattle (why not Maui or one of the Tahitian islands, man?), so we had to interview him. Also, I brought Sven to a randomly generated team meeting of one of the most innovative teams at Microsoft (and filmed it). So
you will see more of Sven and learn more about some very interesting technologies, but here we learn all about Sven, the man, the legend.

We cover a lot in this impromptu conversation and Sven has many interesting things to say about cloudy computation and the future of distributed computation somewhere up there. It's great to have you as a vocal member of Channel 9, Sven. Thank you for the feedback
on C9 (some of which is shared in this conversation) and for being helpful to your fellow Niners. See, Niners, when you come to Seattle, you never know if you will sit down in front of a camera, rolling 9.

Enjoy and thank you again, Sven!
