Ready for Windows Phone Rockstars?

In March, Microsoft announced the Windows Phone 7 “Rockstar” Award, a contest for student developers looking to build a top-of-the-line mobile application for the upcoming Windows Phone 7 platform, using either Silverlight or the XNA framework.

Since the contest’s launch, 131 teams submitted applications. From those, a winner (the “rockstar”) was chosen plus two-runners up. The winning team gets a free trip to Poland for the Imagine Cup, plus $8000 USD. The first runner up earns $4000 USB and the second runner up gets $3000 USD. All winners receive a new Windows Phone, too.

So who won? An app called “Droid,” as it turns out. The app is a game that involves controlling a machine that destroys other machines using the accelerometer. Players can shoot, repair and defend themselves using the provided controls, while making sure their health doesn’t run out.

One of the runners up also built a game, this one with a funny littel guy that moves about a forest, and another built a comic book reader. All of the winners (and other submitters) have impressive offerings, especially considering these are not professionally built games, but those built by students, 16 years or older currently attending either high school or college.

</itunes:summary>

Microsoft KIN Sponsors Facebook Travel Contest

Have you seen the Microsoft KIN commercials where a girl named Rosa travels around the country to visit her social network in person? Well, now you can have that same opportunity too. On the Facebook page for KIN, anyone who “likes” (aka “fans”) the page will be automatically entered in a new sweepstakes where the winner will be sent on their own “KIN journey” to visit their Facebook friends.

While the ads themselves are funny (or perhaps disturbing?) riffs on what visiting ex-boyfriends and online stalkers would be like, the truth is that in real life, most people don’t friend creepy strangers on Facebook. (That was what MySpace was for!) Also, the correct protocol, as everyone knows, is that you “unfriend” your ex upon breakup. Those who don’t do so learn the hard way when the ex takes to posting nasty things on your wall. Believe me, I’ve seen it. So take the ads with a grain of salt, they’re not intended to be taken seriously.

However, I think this is an interesting idea for a contest and one that will likely appeal to the youth demographic on the social network. Facebook, unlike Twitter, MySpace and others, is a site where most people connect only with actual friends and family members instead of with random strangers who share their interests, or, as mentioned above, those who virtually stalk them.

With Facebook’s built-in networks that help you find high school and college friends as well as former colleagues, it’s easy to reconnect via Facebook with those friends you may have lost touch with over the years. How nice would it be to actually get to go see them in person? I know I’d love the opportunity to catch up with my hometown friends and college buddies, who now live all over the U.S. That would be a great roadtrip! I wonder if I’m eligible for this contest?
Bing Launches 2nd Homepage Photo Contest

Due to the great response of the first Bing Homepage Photo Contest, the Bing Search Team has announced they’re doing it again – this time with the theme of “hometown pride.” According to a recent blog post, Kristin Meldahl from Bing revealed that the first contest had over 10,000 entries and over half a million votes. The winning entry by Jeremy J Somers of Australia was a dramatic shot of lightening over a city skyline. With the new contest, there’s more of a specific goal in mind this time. Bing wants photographers to capture the spirit of hometown pride by taking pictures of their own hometowns. The photos should “draw people in and make them want to learn more,” says the blog post. Contest details are now available on the Bing Facebook page. The winner will be decided by a combination of popular votes in the first round, editorial selection before the finals, and by popular vote in the finals. The grand prize winner will be announced on December 21 and the winning photo will go live on the Bing homepage on January 6, 2010.

<itunes:summary>Due to the great response of the first Bing Homepage Photo Contest, the Bing Search Team has announced they’re doing it again – this time with the theme of “hometown pride.” According to a recent blog post, Kristin Meldahl from Bing revealed that the first contest had over 10,000 entries and over half a million votes. The grand prize winner will be announced on December 21 and the winning photo will go live on the Bing homepage on January 6, 2010.</itunes:summary>
