7conifier: App to Customize Your Windows 7 Icon Sets

One of the great things about using Windows is the flexibility when it comes to customization options. Although Windows 7 has built-in support for themes, some users want to go a bit further, customizing everything from the Start Menu to the desktop icons. With Windows, doing so is easy, thanks to integrated options within the OS itself and a number of third-party programs.

One such program is called 7conifier which customizes your Windows 7 icons sets. I recently came across this app thanks to gHacks and I think it’s really fun. Although you can already customize your icons by right-clicking on them and choosing the “Change Icon” option from the Properties –> Shortcut menu, the 7confier program makes it easier to change the entire default icon set at once.

The program comes with three icon sets out of the box, one dark, one light and the default set, which you’ll need if you ever want to change your icons back to their normal state. However, you’re not limited to only these three sets – 7conifier also includes an icon editing program which lets you create your own sets of icons. Plus, you can download icons from the web to use in the program just by placing them in the “packages” folder. The app supports changing the taskbar and Start Menu icons, too.

7conifier is a free app for use on either Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit systems. You can download it from here.

New from Microsoft: Surreal Terrority Windows 7 Theme

I love that Microsoft keeps updating their collection of themes for Windows 7 because - I have to admit - I quickly grow bored with my desktop background and color schemes. I like to switch it up pretty often and the themes feature in Windows 7 lets me do that easily. With themes, my wallpaper isn’t static – it rotates through a series of images on an interval I specify.

The latest theme to grace my desktop is the gorgeous, brightly-hued creation from artist Chuck Anderson called “Surreal Territory.” The theme includes a few different images of landscapes and sky but with a twist. Instead of the natural colors found in nature, the sky is colorized with rainbow-colored tones. Just lovely.

But if that’s not your thing (too girly?) there are plenty of other new themes to choose from including one with images from NASA , for instance, which shows off the infrared imaging of NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope.
Windows Phone 7 Series Theme Now in Beta

Remember when we mentioned how some developers were creating unofficial Windows Phone 7 Series’ themes for 6.5 devices? Well, the first of those themes recently went live. The theme from XDA-Developers forum member Jaxbot just launched into beta this weekend. <itunes:summary> Remember when we mentioned how some developers were creating unofficial Windows Phone 7 Series’ themes for 6.5 devices? Well, the first of those themes recently went live. The theme from XDA-Developers forum member Jaxbot just launched into beta this weekend. Currently, his theme offers a “people hub” with contact info and Facebook status updates, a Bing search feature that includes Bing’s photo of the day, live tiles made using Javascript technology, a program launcher, a lock screen, and more. The next version of the theme will add more hubs, better animations, and more social network integrations, Jaxbot says. He’s also asking for feedback as to what, specifically, users are interested in regarding these features. Additionally, Jaxbot posted info for developers who may be interested in making their own live tiles, too. To install the new beta theme to your 6.5 device, perform the following steps: Install the .CAB file from here Click on the icon in the Start Menu to launch the theme You can also exit the theme using a long top on the right side of the screen, if desired.
Gorgeous Metro UI-Inspired Windows 7 Theme

There’s a new Windows 7 theme in the works over on DeviantArt and it’s inspired by the new metro UI featured in the upcoming Windows Phone 7 Series devices. Created by DeviantArt member, fediaFedia, the theme is designed for use in Rainmeter, a desktop customization platform for Windows. With Rainmeter, you can skin Windows, add gadgets, and even embed data streams like email, RSS, Twitter, etc into your theme. And it appears that the new Windows Phone theme will do just that – the screenshots show feeds and Twitter posts within the theme’s background in addition to tiles like those you’d see on a WP7S device. And the tiles work, too! According to the theme’s description, there are “nearly 30 interactive panels” included with the theme and 24+ different colored skins, including glass.

This theme is still in the works, though – you can’t download it just yet. But keep an eye on this page for updates.

Three New Windows 7 Themes

You know I’m into themes – the new feature of the Windows 7 OS which allows you to customize your background, windows, and sound scheme all with one click. Although Windows 7 has some pretty amazing themes already built in, I’m always on the lookout for more (asyoucan see).

The latest new themes I’ve come across include themes of Windows 7 box art, Ferraris, and even images from Mac’s Snow Leopard OS.

The Windows 7 box art themes are simple and elegant with a glowing Windows log appearing on a green, blue, or black background. Next, German blogger Christian has posted a droolable theme developed by Ferrari featuring some killer pictures of everyone’s dream car. <itunes:summary> You know I’m into themes – the new feature of the Windows 7 OS which allows you to customize your background, windows, and sound scheme all with one click. (Well, one of them, at least). You can read the English translation of the German post here via Rob Margel. Finally, for those of you interested in the desktops of Mac OS X, Redmond Pie has posted a theme pack featuring all the latest Snow Leopard backgrounds. </itunes:summary>

Where to Find Windows 7 Logon Screen Backgrounds

Recently, I’ve been checking out the different ways to customize my Windows 7 logon screen. There’s this manual registry hack as well as this newer downloadable software program that does the hacking for you. But the only thing that was still making customization a bit of a pain was having to resize the wallpaper itself. You see, the Windows 7 logon screen requires the background to be less than 256K in order for it to work. Luckily for me, David Grossman has put together a useful resource that saves me the trouble of cropping and compressing wallpaper myself. Here on his SkyDrive are tons of images – several of them from the Windows 7 wallpapers themselves – that are already compressed and ready to go. Looks like I’m going to be updating my logon screen background a lot now. Well now there’s an even easier way to customize this screen thanks to a new application called the Tweaks.com Logon Changer. With this utility, you can quickly swap out your login screen backgrounds with little effort on your part. Just remember – login screen backgrounds have to less than 256K in size.
Customize Your Logon Background in Windows 7

There have been rumors on the net about a new login background in the latest build of Windows 7. Whether or not that’s true is yet to be confirmed, but there is a way to customize your background now using a registry hack and pictures saved on your own hard drive.

The first step is to create a new DWORD value named OEMBackground in the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Background key.
Change Your Windows 7 Media Center Background

Did you know you can change your Media Center background?
PageRage Dresses Up Your Facebook Profile

I’m not sure why you would want this, but a new app called PageRage will let dress up your Facebook profile so it looks more like a profile found on MySpace instead. (Yikes!) That’s too bad because one of the nicest things about Facebook is it’s clean and simple look and feel, without the busy backgrounds and image-heavy designs that are so prevalent throughout MySpace.

With the new Facebook app PageRage, you now can customize your Facebook profile with new themes that change both the background and the color schemes of your Facebook profile page. Some of these themes are basic, solid backgrounds, but others are quite busy.

Before you freak out and think this is the end for Facebook, take comfort in the fact that you can only see the new themed profiles if you have the PageRage application installed yourself. If you don’t want to see themes, just don’t install it.

The app works via a browser plugin which uses something called Yontoo Layers. Yontoo Layers create a virtual layer over your browser window. I’m not sure entirely how that all works, but it sounds a lot like what the Firefox extension Stylish offers.

I know. Facebook themes, ick. I definitely won’t be…oh wait…is that a pink one? Awesome.

Stardock Releases MyColors

The team at WinCustomize has just announced that their MyColors skinning suite is now available to the general public. For anyone interested in skinning Windows, running MyColors is going to be a lot of fun. With the application of a MyColors theme, you can completely transform your version of Windows - GUI, icons, gadgets, wallpaper, and all. The MyColors suite will offer many themes that appeal to sports fans - like themes from the NBA, NHL, and NCAA - but there are other themes available as well. For example, Ford and GM are offering themes featuring their vehicles, but Windows geeks will want to check out the "Diamond theme," a theme that is very much like Aero Diamond, one of the concepts floated around before the Vista team settled on Aero Glass. If you're already running Stardock's WindowBlinds or Object Desktop, you can still run MyColors without uninstalling those items. The Diamond theme is free, as is the MyColors app, but the other themes are available for purchase at $20 each.
