eBay Adopting Windows Azure

Auction giant eBay is adopting Microsoft’s
new Windows Azure platform appliance, according to news from the Wordwide Partner Conference going on now in D.C. The appliance is “a turnkey cloud platform” that consists of Windows Azure, SQL Azure and a Microsoft-specified configuration of network, storage
and server hardware. It’s different than traditional server appliances because it’s not just one node or a few nodes, it’s hundreds of servers and designed to be extendible, with the ability to scale up from hundreds to tens-of-thousands of servers. It also
supports integration with existing datacenter tools and ops, multi-tenancy, and is optimized for service availability via fault tolerance and self-healing features.

But don’t let the name “appliance” fool you – the appliance is actually a container filled with servers running Azure. The appliance aspect to the solution is due to the fact that it brings the Azure servers to a customer’s own datacenter, instead of having
that customer offload their data to Microsoft’s servers, in other words, it’s a private cloud in a box. A really big box!

What Azure Looks Like

If you didn’t attend PDC 2009, you missed a chance to see Windows Azure up close and personal. How close? How about being able to actually walk inside an Azure data center container? That’s right – one of the cooler displays at PDC was a modular container that was just sitting there on PDC’s floor. Attendees got to peek inside this container which is just like the ones that power the new cloud platform, Windows Azure, from a number of datacenters worldwide.

The containers are self-regulated thanks to sensors that monitor temperature, air control, and humidity. Based on the sensor’s readings, various mechanisms adjust the amount of air flow through the container. For example, if a container gets too cold, dampers in the upper part open up to allow air to circulate back though, explains a post on Bill Evjen's blog.
Millions of Servers Coming to the Cloud

At the TechEd Conference, Bill Gates gave his last speech as a Microsoft full-time employee and one of the topics he discussed was Microsoft’s vision for cloud computing. (Full transcript is here.) In the speech, Gates spoke of Microsoft’s plan to have “many millions” of servers in the cloud, running all the services that traditional I.T. shops run today like Exchange, SQL Server, BizTalk, and more. These Microsoft cloud services will come in three different options – free, ad-supported, and commercial (fee-based), he said. One has to wonder how this will position the I.T. guys in the future – it looks like their role will be changing. Whereas before, I.T. needed to know how to set up, install, manage, and support the servers in their organization, it seems like the new I.T. guy will be more a facilitator, helping a company pick out the best cloud services for the business and handling the administrative aspects of setting them up. This work will be less “geeky” than before, but still just as critical to a business’s success. It should be really interesting to watch as these things change the way the business world runs.

(img courtesy of News from Microsoft Ireland)
